Dear parishioners,

Celebrating the Feast of St. Peter and Paul on a Sunday is a special gift for me. I spent four years studying in Rome at the North American College. There, on our roof, is a quote in Latin that says, O blessed Rome, which was consecrated by the glorious blood of the

two Princes!… Truly Rome is blessed to be graced by the total surrender and martyrdom of these two Apos-tles, but being a part of the Roman Catholic Church, we too hold up our affection for these two saints who firmly established, through their witness, faith in Jesus Christ. Within the eternal city and to this day the successor of St. Peter lives within a football field length from the tomb of St. Peter.

Have a blessed Sunday!

GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

“The Church is not a community of the

perfect, but a community of sinners, obliged to recognize their need for God’s love, their need to be purified through the cross of Jesus Christ.”

~Pope Benedict XVI, 2012 Feast of Saints Peter & Paul

MANY CHURCHES bear the names of Saints Peter and Paul. One of the most prominent is the spectacular Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

In the mid-19th century construction of the church be-gan in an environment when the growth of the Catholic population and the increasing visibility of Catholic insti-tutions gave rise to the suspicion that the Catholic Church and its large number of immigrant members posed a threat to traditional American values. Riots against Catholics and their property were sometimes the result of this attitude.

With the potential for violence against the building in mind, the cathedral’s original clerestory windows were placed over 75 feet above the ground, their height, leg-end has it, measured from the distance the builders—and therefore a potential vandal—could throw a rock into the air.

The apostles Peter and Paul suffered their share of per-secution for their faith. What is interesting was their reaction: They didn’t retaliate—Peter became a rock rather than tossing one back. They simply had faith, en-dured, trusted in God—and kept on building the church.

Class size is limited to 30 people, and interested parties should be intermediate level sewers. The cost of the workshop plus three meals and a snack is $75.00, of that $60.00 is tax deductible (proceeds will benefit Catholic Daughters charities.)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU

Our Common Ground Collaborative out-reach ministry is looking for willing pa-rishioners to perform two important roles:

#1 - A computer gifted individual who can help or-ganize our communication, both among our mem-bers and outbound. Four hours a month would likely be all that's needed.

#2 - Coordinator for our school music program - bringing 'live' music performances to students at our Common Ground served school. You don't have to carry a tune, just be able to juggle dates with both school administrators and music providers. This per-son is picking up with the second year of an existing program.

If you can help with either one of these needs - or would just like to learn more about them - please contact Dennis Regan at (619)670-8487 or [email protected]

Grocery Outlet in Casa de Oro will be holding their “FEED THE NEED” FOOD DRIVE next month. During the entire month of July, shoppers can purchase a pre-filled bag of groceries, or pack one

of their own, to be donated to the Santa Sophia food pantry. Unlike other local "bag of food" drives, the entire proceeds stay in our community. Cash dona-tions will also be accepted at the store registers. See store display or a cashier for more details.

We bless ourselves with Holy Water in order to recall our Baptism and renew our Baptismal vows. When we were baptized, we or our Godparents, on our behalf, vowed that we would turn away from sin and forever and foremost belong to Christ and his body, the Church, and to bring our gifts and talents to serve humanity. We were baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and were immersed in or had Holy Water poured on us to complete our Baptism. Every time we bless ourselves with Holy Water, we not only renew that Baptismal vow to live as one be-longing to Christ and his body, the Church, but we receive God’s grace to do so more faithfully.

The main purpose of Holy Water is for blessing, but it is also sprinkled on the congregation by the priest during certain celebrations, and put into special containers for personal use by the faithful. Holy Water is also found in the Holy Water or Baptismal fonts at the church entrances, and we typi-cally bless ourselves with this Holy Water as we enter and exit the church.

Because Holy Water is holy, we gently and reverently dip our right fingertips into it and then use those same fingertips to make the sign of the cross. This is done while recalling our baptismal vows, the meaning behind the sign of the cross, and our commitment to Christ. Blessing ourselves with Holy Water is done in the same unhurried and meaningful manner as when we make the sign of the cross without Holy Water.

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19
