New Israel Curriculum

On Yom Ha’atzmaut SAR inaugurated a new Israel curriculum developedby the Lookstein Center for Jewish Education at Bar-Ilan University, inpartnership with AMODS Yeshiva University. SAR’s own Rabbi Fuld isthe project director. The curriculum is being taught by general studiesteachers through the history curriculum. The entire curriculum is 16lessons about Israel and Zionism and is being piloted this year school-wide, with four lessons to be taught between Yom Ha'atzmaut and YomYerushalayim. The students will be learning about Eretz Yisrael fromancient to modern times. The program encompasses a great deal ofinformation and will give the students a wonderful overview of Israel's

history. We are so very grateful to the SAR PTC who sponsored the workbooks and we thank them for theirbeautiful dedication on the back of each workbook which reads: “In honor of our wonderful children who fillour building with joy and love of learning, our committed parent volunteers who generously give of their timeand creativity to benefit our children and community, our dedicated teachers who instill in our children adeep love of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Together we make SAR a very special community.”

Fairytales Can Come True... By: Morah Soo Our prolific writers in the enrichment cluster, Precocious Princes and Princesses: an Adventure in a

Modern Fairytale, are working on creating their original versions of a modern fairytale. We have discussedwhat character traits an ideal prince or princess could have, like being generous, noble, thoughtful, kind, smart or adventurous. We came up with numerous adjectives, which the students are incorporating intotheir stories. Next, we decided on which setting(s) would be ideal for the fairy tales to take place in. Someof the ideas were an enchanted forest, a beach, an ocean, an island, outer space or imaginary lands calledGumplish and Fumbeland! Judah Hain and Aiden Shinar are collaborating on a fairy tale set in Gumplishand Fumbeland, where the prince and princess are trying to stop the war that's taking place there. Duringthe week, these two aspiring writers did research for their story, taking notes from other fairy tales to takesplace in an enchanted forest, where a brave fairy is able to overcome many obstacles, and ends uprescuing her fairy prince who is trapped in a tower by a mean witch. Abby Hakimi writes with muchimagination about two children (two parts of the sun) who are separated at birth and their parents had toleave their planet. Eliza Fisher, our prolific writer, has written a complicated tale, set on an island, where asmart, pretty princess battles many villains, and ends up marrying one of the villains who is a prince thatsaves her. Eva Garbuz spins a yarn about a brave princess who kills a crab and saves her prince on thebeach. Both Ariella Goldenberg and Alexa Rose like the traditional format of the prince saving the princess.Ariella's prince saves the heroine from a trap, and Alexa's crab prince saves her from being trapped in hershell! All these incredible fairy tales will be recorded on the ipad, in a format chosen by the writer--eitherPuppet Pals or a typed and illustrated version of their stories. What amazing yarns these young minds arespinning!!

This past Tuesday and Wednesday, we joined our classmates on an outstanding overnight experience toBoston, Massachusetts. We began the day by waking up at six in the morning to start the incredible trip. From Plymouth Plantation to the Blue Man Group to the Duck Tours we truly enjoyed every minute of ourtrip. We had the opportunity to visit the Englishmen and Wampanoag people and see their way of life inPlymouth Plantation. The Witch Dungeon gave us a visual idea of what people thought about witches andwhat would happen if they found out that you were part of the "devil group". Finishing the day, we haddinner at the BU Hillel followed the unbelievable performance of three blue men in their show, the “Blue ManGroup”. By the time we got to the Best Western hotel to daven mincha and maariv we were exhausted!

The next morning we awoke to start our fun-filled day with shacharit and breakfast. Afterwards, we enjoyedvisiting Fenway Park and a tour of the Freedom trail that was given by “Elizabeth Banks”, “John Hancock’sBrother” and others. Later we walked through the meaningful Holocaust memorial followed by lunch.Another incredible activity was the Duck Tours where we began by touring on a bus then driving that busdirectly into the Charles River! We had a meaningful and educational trip while still always laughing and having a blast.

Videographers in Training

Last week the children of the N8 visited Wave Hill. Using an ipad they made a beautiful video of their trip. All of the photos of the plants and flowers were taken by the children. Enjoy! Click here for the video.

Oh The Places You’ll Go!

K3 studied the recent history of Yerushalayim in honor of the upcoming Yom Yerushalayim. They learnedthe chorus of 'Yerushalayim shel Zahav', and watched videos of Yerushalayim. They learned about the IrHa'atika, the old city, which is surrounded by a crenellated wall, which is a wall with battlements. Weidentified the churva shul before and after its recent reconstruction, and Sha'ar Yafo, one of the main gates

to get into the old city, alongside Migdal David, named after david melech yisrael even though it was builtmuch later. Outside the crenellated wall they learned about the following exciting Jewish sites in the newcity:The Model of Beit Hamikdash, Moshe Montefiore's windmill in Yemin Moshe, the Knesset, TheHershey's kiss shaped building at the Israel Museum, The Chagall windows at Hadassah hospital, theAHAVA love sculpture at the Israel Museum, the Mifletzet - the monster slide, and near the knesset, theMenorah that England gave to Israel. Each of the children created a page with pictures of all the above, separating the old and new city with awall. They labeled each site, and called the whole page JEWISH JERUSALEM! The children can't wait tovisit these newly familiar places!

It's That "Kind" of Week

Monday marked the shloshim of SAR parent David Brody (z"l) and in his memory, the 2nd grade togetherwith Michelle, Raphael and Anina, family and friends, came together to celebrate David’s life and legacy.

The 2nd grade area was set up where each of the four classes “learned” with a special guest. Rabbi AviWeiss, Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg, Rabbi Steven Exler and our own Morah Rita Rivka told stories, learnedmishna and discussed a person’s “neshama”. The children were engaged and participated eagerly in all ofthe discussions.

Page 8: SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 5.18 · 18-05-2012  · identified the churva shul before and after its recent reconstruction, and Sha'ar Yafo, one of the main gates. to get into the

The program continued on the mezzanine, where Rabbi Krauss addressed the children and guests. Hespoke about the words “kol haolam kulo gesher tsar meod” --that the world is a narrow bridge but we must

not fear at all. Then he unveiled a beautiful collage created by the children of the 2nd grade in David’smemory to pay tribute to one of David's favorite songs. The pasuk “kol haolam kulo” is the centerpiece ofthe collage. With Mr. Glazer on the piano, everyone then sang “kol haolam kulo” together (and did the handmotions), first softly and then louder and louder. The students went back to class while family and friendsgathered to have a siyyum. The morning was incredibly moving and meaningful. May David’s memory be ablessing to his family and friends.

דבר תורה

By: Shoshana Sklarin- 1X

This week we read two parshiot, parshat Behar and parshat Bechukotai. Wefinish sefer Vayikra and say “chazak chazak v’nitchazek”. In Parshat Behar theTorah teaches us “Tנ\ ִאי] ֶאת-ֲעִמיתTוְ^א ת”, “you should not hurt another person”.This is called onaat devarim, which means don’t use words to hurt anotherperson. The Torah is teaching us to watch our words and respect others.

Here are some examples:

If someone gets mixed up and says 10 plus 10 equals 30, don’t make fun ofthem, and don’t remind them about their mistake the next day. At recess if someone falls down when theyare playing jump rope, don’t make fun of them. Instead, you can say “that was a good try”. If someone feelsembarrassed that they don’t know how to read well, you should not make fun of them when they arereading out loud in reading groups. The Torah wants us to watch our words and use our words for good.

Shabbat Shalom!
