INTRODUCTION

Greetings from the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce

We are often defined by our Past but the Present provides us op-portunities to create our Future. So, let’s ask ourselves: What legacy do we want to leave for our future generations? Is it a community that sustains just our current needs or a community

that provides endless sustenance for success?

Your hard work has created safe neighborhoods, great health care, fire and safety services that are unsurpassed. We’ve provided a strong economic cli-mate that continues to grow with your support and investment. Our schools, churches, community organizations, parks and recreation areas are burgeoning with positive energy. Our civic leaders are held accountable and lead not with just good intentions but with foresight and commitment to the greater good. So how do we keep the up pace of current success and also maintain it for long-term longevity? We think this is the year you ask yourselves that.

If you’re investing in Sarpy’s community now, then you’ve just helped mold its future for tomorrow. Continue that strong show of support of businesses, neighborhoods, schools and civic leaders, but collaborate with other associa-tions, pool your resources and share ideas. Your visions might be the same as others that can strategically make them come to fruition, or they might be original enough to inspire a whole town. Our Present has emerged from our Past but it is with combined inspiration and hard work that we get to create our Future.

Together, we can shape Sarpy County for generations to come.

CHAMBER INFORMATIONSarpy County Chamber of Commerce staff, clockwise from left: Annisa Visty-Withrow, OfficeManager; Greg Hartman, Project Manager; Karen Gibler, Director of First Impressions; and Wendy Richey, President.

Are we a little futuristic these days? Have aliens invaded? No, but true SARPYnians have! You’ll see them everywhere as you cruise across Sarpy County.

They have abducted empty retail and commercial bays. They have moved into homes, pushing neighborhoods to capacity. They are building bridges for future corridors that will allow transport of product and link us to the whole Midwest galaxy. They are digging dirt to construct monoliths of business, data centers, retail,

restaurants and entertainment. The future is here and it’s in Sarpy County.

A few worlds have been created with a big bang and then the planets align depending on their gravitational pull. Not so in Sarpy County. Its development is being formed by SARPYnians with deliberate intent for generations to come. Business, civic and community alliances have formed to make the Sarpy system what it is today. Expect to see this shining star brighten all of Nebraska.

SARPYnians invade!

New to the ChamberLast year we launched the Sarpy

Chamber Young Professionals, and what a great year they have had. Their energy continues to astound us all.

Leadership Sarpy went to new heights with a push-it-to-the-limits agenda. One of the best classes we have had yet!

These premiere chamber opportunities will continue to grow in 2013 and 2014.

We added a new Technology Committee in January that is a combination of a unique group of professionals that decipher the ever-changing world of technology and advise, suggest and educate our members

on best business practices when it comes to IT.

It could be as varied as the use of tablets in the office, cyber security issues, social media or wireless support.

This group will truly be an advocate for all our members.

Board Members

What on earth is a Sarpynian?

Like the board members listed on this page, a

Sarpynian is anyone who lives, works or is otherwise

active in Sarpy County and is a proud member

of the community.

Page 14: Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce 2013 Directory

14 2013 Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce Directory & Buyer’s Guide

The SAC Federal Credit Union, headquartered near Bellevue at 11515 S. 39th St., serves people

from eight counties, including residents of Sarpy County. It is the largest member-owned financial institution in the area and has grown tremendously over the past 66 years.

Credit unions offer the same services as banks. Checking, savings, loans and mortgage loans are some of the services offered. However, the difference is that credit unions are member-owned. Credit unions are not-for-profit, and profits are returned to members. The $5 joining fee entitles you to be a voting member and elect the volunteer board of directors.

Any member is qualified to serve on the board of directors and can be nomi-nated and elected at the annual meeting. Although there are no restrictions about who can serve on the board, it is preferred that they have served on one of the com-mittees, such as supervisory, collections, services, budget and investments.

“A couple of years after the credit union was started, the United States Department of Defense moved SAC to Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, and the credit union moved along with it,” said Gail L. Deboer, president and CEO of the

organization.“There was already a credit union on

base and they co-existed for a while but there is a regulation that prohibits more than one credit union on the base. So, they merged into the SAC Federal Credit Union and functioned until 1990 when the base realignment project (BRAC) took place,” said Deboer.

Before BRAC, the credit union served only Sarpy and Douglas counties. However, after BRAC it was decided, by the senior management and the board, that they would become a community-chartered credit union.

The decision ensured that anyone who lived, worked, worshiped or attended school in the area could be a member.

A few years later, the area was ex-panded to include four counties: Douglas, Sarpy and Cass counties in Nebraska and Pottawattamie in Iowa. Two years ago, the area was expanded to eight counties. According to Cynthia L. Buettner, senior vice president of information, technology, marketing and sales, “At that time we thought that the rural areas surrounding the metropolitan area needed a credit union as well.”

More recent expansion includes Saun-ders and Washington counties in Nebraska

and Harrison and Mills in Iowa.

This huge expan-sion of the organi-zation left the credit union’s current building on South 39th Street “bulging at the seams,” Deboer said. “We’ve had double-digit growth over the last five years and it has gotten to the point where we can’t hire anyone because of lack of space.”

Because of the credit union’s growth, a new corporate headquarters is being built at 72nd Street and Nebraska Highway 370.

“Much of our tremendous expansion over the past few years is due to our try-ing to better serve our members and our making SAC Federal Credit Union a good place to work for our employees,” Deboer said. — Joan Krasne

In 1965 Bill Brooks talked about the need for a local college to support growth within the Bellevue community. A year later, Bellevue College (now Bellevue University) was founded

and has been educating students from across Sarpy County ever since.

When Bellevue College opened, the curriculum was designed to offer programs of study in liberal arts, teacher education and business administration. The first-semester enrollment was 409 students. Of those students, 355 attended evening classes, with the remainder going during the day.

From the beginning, the university designed its courses for working students. It has met its students’ needs by creating programs of study such as online degree-completion programs.

“Way back when, we knew that all of our related administra-tive and academic offices had to accommodate the working student,” said Dr. Mary B. Hawkins, Bellevue University president. “We have consistently tailored our operations to be flexible and functional for working adults.”

Initially, all classes were housed in the Administration Building. In the 1980s, as the university grew, the Student Center and the Humanities Center were added. By 1983, enrollment had grown to 3,000 students.

In 1988, the university opened its Lozier location to offer classes in west Omaha.

Situated near the intersection of Galvin Road and Harvell Drive, the main campus continued to grow. In the fall of 2011, enrollment reached more than 10,000.

“We have invested in technology that brings learning,

academic resources and administrative services to students in a compre-hensive way,” Hawkins said. “For example, we were early adopters of library systems that gave 24/7 access to materials and publications and assistance.”

BU grew significantly by offer-ing degrees and courses online. Technology has also changed the face of the classroom. Faculty can work remotely, and the university doesn’t have to shut down for inclement weather. The first undergraduate online program was offered in 1996; the online MBA program was launched the following year.

With ever-changing technology, the introduction of the Flexxive learning program in 2013 has made learning even more accessible. The program allows students to progress at a pace that works best for them and reflects the trend that many students are now using tablets to study, Hawkins said.

What’s down the line for Bellevue University? The university is considering launching additional degree programs this year under its new Flexxive platform, increasing the accessibility of a college education for even more students.

Whatever the trends, Bellevue University plans to be at the forefront, offering affordable and flexible education options for every student. — Valerie Koehler

Waste Management of Nebraska has been serving Sarpy County since the 1980s.

Though the company has always been concerned with safe disposal of waste, what that means and how it is accomplished has changed for the com-pany. Waste Management is more focused on reducing environmental impact and increasing re-use opportunities than ever before.

“We are charting new territory at Waste Management,” said Lisa Disbrow, area senior public affairs manager. “We’re no longer merely in the business of picking up trash and putting it some-where safe. Keeping the environment and our people and neighbors safe remains our most fundamental commitment.”

Disbrow said she has seen greater emphasis on sustainable ways to deal with discarded materials. In the late 1980s Waste Management was focused on trash disposal. The company is now heavily

focused on managing and recovering resources for recycling and re-use.

By getting to know each customer’s needs, Waste Management can design and implement sustainable solutions for residential and industrial clients. The company performs waste audits to determine what materials are being discarded.

“Commercial property owners and managers turn to us for help in achieving their green program goals,” Disbrow said.

“The key to our process is a designated sustainability expert,” she said. The expert helps manage all necessary resources. Then, assessing each cus-tomer’s operation, the company develops integrated services using data tracking and reporting.

“The end result is better environmental performance and a higher standard of resource management,” Disbrow said.

There also have been changes in resource recovery. In the late 1980s to

early 1990s, residents were required to sort and separate recyclable materials.

In the mid-1990s there was a switch to commingling recycling. Commingling allows residents to use one receptacle for all recyclable materials. Waste Manage-ment delivers the materials to a facil-ity where the resources are sorted for recycling.

Waste Management of Nebraska provides environmental solutions to residential and business customers in Sarpy County and much of the surround-ing area.

A growing number of customers look to Waste Management for sustainable waste management solutions.

“A lot of corporations have adopted a sustainability goal, as we have,” Disbrow said. “We are committed to helping our customers reach their sustainability goals as well.” — Valerie Koehler

Goal surpassed:

Waste Management has set a sustainability goal to manage 20 mil-lion tons of recyclable material by 2020. As of 2011 the company was on its way to meeting that goal by managing 13 million tons of recyclable material.

Fleet emissions is another environmental concern for Waste Management. The company’s 2020 goal was to reduce its fleet emissions by 15 percent. As of today the company has surpassed its goal by reducing emissions by 20 percent.

A CALLING TO SERVE, PROVIDE

Divine Truth Christian Store opened its doors in 1982 to provide Christian resources to its nearby neighbors in Sarpy County. Nearly 30 years later, their philosophy

remains the same: to serve their customer base the best they can, for as long as God leads them to do so.

“We feel we continually provide a unique service and we feel we are supposed to be here,” said Rodney Mackrill, manager. “We try to the best of our ability to find something to fill their needs.”

Mackrill, who has been with Divine Truth for nearly 25 years, has seen it grow, change and expand.

The original store started in a 1,000-square-foot bay on 83rd Street. The store offered mostly traditional artwork, bibles and Christian books. Once located in the building behind IHOP, Divine Truth underwent near-constant change. As other businesses moved out, Divine Truth would rent the empty bay, remodel the space and expand the storefront.

In 1982 Divine Truth occupied only one bay. It stayed that way for nearly 10 years, then it moved to the middle bay. The store continued to expand until it occupied nearly 50 percent of the building.

Now located at 6905 S. 84th St. in La Vista, the store occupies 10,000 square feet. Mackrill said they had an opportunity of a lifetime when they were offered a spot in the new building. The developer designed the space to accommodate the unique needs of the store. Construction was completed in March 2012.

Today, Divine Truth uses the Internet to reach out to its customer base. The website draws customers to the store and allows customers to place orders or register for coupons. In 2010 a Facebook page was created, which has allowed the store to interact and connect with customers in a whole new way.

“The industry has changed because of technology,” Mackrill said. “But you get into this industry because you feel a calling.”

As the store grew, so did its customer base. But some customers have been with Divine Truth since the beginning and have shown their gratitude and loyalty by helping the store move as it has expanded.

“We will be here as long as the Lord calls us to,” Mackrill said. “It’s amazing that it’s been 30 years. But it seems like yesterday.” — Valerie Koehler

COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE

Alegent Creighton Health Midlands Hospital has been supporting the medical needs of Sarpy County residents and neighboring communities since 1976. Although the

name has changed over time, the commitment to excellence remains constant.

Midlands Hospital has undergone several changes since it opened. In 1997, Midlands Hospital joined Alegent Health to become Alegent Midlands Hospital. In 2012, when the Alegent and Creighton Health Systems merged, it became known as Alegent Creighton Health Midlands Hospital.

In October 2006, Midlands Hospital announced a $40 million expansion and renovation to meet the growing health care needs in Sarpy and Cass counties. The plans included expansion of the emergency department, a new intensive care unit, development of all-private patient rooms, expansion of surgical services, an expansion and renovation of radiology services, construction of the integrated medical office building with physician offices and outpatient services, expansion of cardiovascular services, a new clinical laboratory, and additions of primary care and specialist physicians.

Three services Midlands Hospital is especially proud of are the Breast Health Center, eICU and Occupational Health Services.

The Breast Health Centers can be found at four area loca-tions: Bergan Mercy and Immanuel Medical Centers and Lakeside and Midlands hospitals. Construction to expand the infrastructure at the Midlands location began in the spring of 2013 with completion scheduled for late summer.

The Breast Health Centers provide comprehensive support to patients by coordinating doctors, nurses and specialists begin-ning when a mass is discovered.

“Breast imaging is expanding and always evolving,” said Cindy Alloway, vice president and chief operating officer for Alegent Creighton Health Midlands Hospital. “The use of Gammagram can cut down the need for more costly testing but enhances the ability to diagnose.”

Gammagram is a breast-imaging machine that provides additional information following a mammogram: It uses a tracing agent to detect potential malignant cells. If doctors feel that more testing should be done, the patient has the opportunity to see a specialist immediately after testing.

“This has truly been a godsend for us,” Alloway said. “The agony to wait for results and appointment availabilities is greatly reduced.”

Before, a patient might have waited weeks to see an oncolo-gist or radiologist for further testing, but with the Breast Health Center that time is greatly reduced. Because Midlands houses those specialists on site, a patient may see them the same day a mass was detected.

This type of quick decision-making isn’t limited to breast health. Caring for patients in the ICU is a 24-hour responsibility and takes a dedicated medical staff. To add a second set of eyes to patient monitoring can ease the minds of the medical staff and the patient’s family.

In 2007 Alegent Health introduced the eICU concept. The system allows constant monitoring of ICU patients from a single-site location via video.

“This provides an extra level of comfort for the ICU staff knowing there is a second set of eyes on their patients,” Alloway said.

And as Sarpy County grows so does Midlands. The Oc-cupational Health Services may be the program that is next to expand. Occupational Health Services supports internal and external clients with drug testing, pre-employment health screenings and healthy living services. — Valerie Koehler

The hospital has grown to better meet the needs of a growing Sarpy County.

WITH GREAT RESPECT AND CARE

In 1906 Omahan John A. Gentleman started in the business of helping families when their loved ones died. Fifty years later, when Gentleman retired, the Belford family, morticians in

Council Bluffs, purchased the business. Their tradition of service to families has continued to this day.

The family’s mortuaries were already beginning to serve people from Sarpy County when the Belfords opened their fully licensed, free-standing building in Bellevue at 3402 Samson Way. According to Sarah Bernhagen, public relations director, “We were already working in Bellevue when our present building was built specifically for funerals. It opened in February of 2011. We offer traditional and nontraditional cremations and burials for the Sarpy County area. We don’t cater to any specific religion and we do offer services to families who don’t have religious affilia-tions,” she said.

The Bellevue mortuary can be divided so that funerals can be more intimate if there is a smaller group. Larger funerals of more than 200 people can also be accommodated. There are also facilities that allow families to serve catered lunches.

Technology plays a role in modern funerals. For example, John A. Gentleman is able to do live broadcast funerals that reach people all over the world. The mortuary is also equipped with a state-of-the-art music system, and the staff can hire any kind of musicians that families desire — even bagpipers.

Staff work closely with families to learn about their deceased loved ones. “We have an amazing selection of funeral directors who take the time to make sure that they know the families before funeral plans begin,” Bernhagen said.

Funeral directors will work very closely with churches and synagogues when rabbis and ministers are involved.

“Because we are family-owned, we have the ability to meet more nontraditional needs of families,” Bernhagen said. For example, the funeral home is able to cater to the needs of families who want to be creative by encouraging the inclusion of family belongings, pictures and mementos that belonged to their loved ones.

“We’ve had some amazing, beautiful things that people have brought to us,” Bernhagen said. The staff will take everything to the church and set things up for the funeral.

If the preference of the family is to stay at the mortuary, that wish can be accom-modated as well.

ENERGY SAVINGS NEXT TO THE INTERSTATEWhen you’re driving from coast to coast, a familiar place

is a welcome sight. On Interstate 80 one of those sites is Sapp Bros. Travel Center at 9915 S. 148th St. When the center opened in 1971, it offered retail gas and diesel fuel, convenience store items and a restaurant. It was built for the convenience of the Interstate motorist and to meet the needs of the local com-munity.

Over the years, as the needs of motorists have evolved, so has Sapp Bros. In the early years the restaurant was in a building near the gas station. Then Sapp Bros. added the diesel fuel island as more trucks relied on diesel fuel. The Travel Center was created by joining the two buildings and relocating the gas pumps. Nearly five years ago the restaurant was remodeled and updated.

Current amenities include a 24-hour restaurant, deli/food bar, private showers, laundry room, service and lube bay, tire services, dual-product pumps (gas pumps that offer more than one fuel type), bulk fuel delivery, propane, wireless internet, ATM and 24-hour road service. Services include retail gas, commercial, industrial and agricultural lubricant, convenience store and diesel exhaust fluid. Diesel exhaust fluid reduces the amount of carbon monoxide in the exhaust from diesel engines. Sapp Bros. also supplies more than 150 dealer-owner gas stations including Shell, Conoco-Phillips, BP and Sinclair.

The near future will bring more cutting-edge services to Sapp Bros. The company will open a new diesel exhaust fluid packag-ing plant and will install a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station. Compressed natural gas is less expensive and prices are more stable than gasoline or diesel.

“Those willing to make the investment can save on com-pressed natural gas,” said Don Quinn, president of Sapp Bros. Travel Center.

Compressed natural gas could be one of the fuels of the

future, allowing for more independence from foreign oil. While still in the negotiation stage, Quinn hopes to first install a CNG station at the company’s Lincoln location and then the Sarpy County station.

Although it is unclear how popular these will be for the average consumer, those with a large trucking fleet can realize massive reductions in their fuel costs by using CNG.

Quinn says Sapp Bros. is ready to commit the money it will take to install the CNG pumps and plans to seek the support of area businesses.

“It’s the chicken-or-the-egg scenario,” Quinn said. “We have to have it before consumers can use it. We will be reaching out to local fleets to seize an opportunity to serve them.”

Sapp Bros. is also willing to meet with interested businesses and assist them in locating an installer to convert their trucks to a hybrid system, allowing the vehicle to run on both CNG and diesel fuel. The cost to convert to a hybrid is estimated at $15,000 to $20,000, as opposed to $120,000 to purchase a new trucking system.

Another environmentally sound option at Sapp Bros. is avail-ability of 24 plug-in power pedestals. Installed in partnership with Shorepower Technologies, the pedestals allow a driver to turn off the truck’s engine without compromising refrigerated payloads.

Drivers can also use the 120-volt or 208-volt electricity plug-ins to heat or cool their cabs and run appliances such as microwaves and refrigerators. This not only cuts down on the cost of diesel consumption from idling but reduces emissions.

Sapp Brothers also chooses not to sell and profit from certain items, such as alcohol, Quinn said.

“The key to our success is doing the right things,” he said, “and we feel we do the right things for our customers and our employees.” — Valerie Koehler

Sapp Bros. installed

24 of these power pedestals. The

stations allow a truck driver to

turn off the truck’s engine without compromising a refrigerated

payload. This cuts down on the use of diesel fuel during idling.

CORNERSTONE BUSINESSES

What today is known as the Performance Auto Group started in 1957 when Johnny Baxter opened a dealer-ship on Military Road in Benson. Later, bought by Tal

Anderson, the agency began a series of four westward moves. With dealerships in Omaha, La Vista and Lincoln; Kansas City,

Kansas; and Independence, Missouri, the agency now has 17 new and used car dealerships.

In 1998, Performance Chrysler bought Grube Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Papillion. Located at 7010 S. 124th Circle in La Vista, the dealership is known as Performance Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram. The dealership has been at its current location since 2003 and has grown quickly. In 2005, it added on to its current building to accommodate increases in sales and service. Beth Rathman, internet sales manager in La Vista, attributes much of this growth to advances in technology.

“When I began my career in the automobile business in 1985, if you wanted to do research on a car that you wanted to buy, you read magazines. Now, 90 percent of our customers will visit an Internet site of some kind before they even set foot in a dealer-ship,” Rathman said.

Customers often come to the dealership having done research and bringing with them the information they have learned online.

“In 1985, if you wanted to buy a car, you had to visit every dealership and pick up brochures from all of them,” Rathman said. Potential customers took those brochures home and used them to make comparisons. But now, thanks to the Internet, car shoppers can use spreadsheets with all sorts of information about the vehicles they want to compare.

Present technology makes custom-ers more knowledgeable. Sites can inform prospective customers of what the car originally cost and what it is being sold for in other parts of the country.

It is possible for customers to go online, shop window stickers and accomplish everything right from their home computers.

“Performance Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram has a 50-year history of service to the Omaha-Sarpy County community. We’re here to stay and we’re growing,” Rathman said.

“We’re not just here to sell cars,” said Rathman, “We’re here to be part of the community.” — Joan Krasne

“I think what defines our company more than any single thing is that we were founded by one man with one truck,” said Derek Leathers, president and chief operat-

ing officer of Werner Enterprises. The company, with its global headquarters at 14507 Frontier

Road, was founded by Clarence “C.L.” Werner in 1956 when, at age 19, he purchased a gasoline-powered Ford truck and then announced that he was in the trucking business. Known to be a man with a vision and belief, he has used hard work to move his business forward.

Since he is a small-town Nebraska boy, Werner wants to keep the global headquarters in Sarpy County. He believes in the Midwest work ethic and thinks this area is a great place to operate a business because of the kinds of associates who can be attracted here.

Werner has a home in Nebraska and is chairman emeritus of the board of directors. At age 76, he is still active in the business and, according to Leathers, “Knows everything that’s going on.” His sons, Gary and Greg, are also officers of the company.

The company has 47 offices around the world that have more than one employee. Many other offices have only one employee.

“We will continue to expand and provide the services that our customers want. We also work with other trucking companies to solve problems,” Leathers said.

C.L., himself a truck driver, dropped out of high school in Petersburg, Nebraska, to start what was, until 1976, a small trucking company. “The idea of an overnight success is often overrated because it took 20 years to go from one to 100 trucks,” Leathers said.

When the company went public in 1986, it had 600 trucks. Today, Werner is a $2 billion a year company that is publicly

traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. It moves freight on a global scale via trains, planes, ships and trucks. Presently, it does shipping to and from 120 countries, and has approximately 11,000 employees.

In general, its customers are Fortune 500 companies that produce name-brand products on shelves across America. The company often hauls freight from the original factories in countries such as China to the final destination.

“Mr. Werner used modern management techniques long before they were in fashion. He hires good people and trusts and empowers them to do their jobs,” Leathers said. Werner rewards his employees for their successes, while allowing for mistakes and risk-taking.

Leathers began his career with the company 14 years ago as a dispatcher. He obtained a commercial driver’s license and went through training. “I did drive a truck for a short time, graduated from Driver Training School and I did deliver some loads. Most of our senior leadership have worked in a variety of roles. The vast majority of them have started at entry-level positions in order to learn the business,” he said.

“Working at Werner Enterprises is a place that people want to be. I certainly love working here, and I can’t imagine working anywhere else.” — Joan Krasne

Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School has been an anchor in Sarpy County since 1968.

Daniel J. Gross, an Omaha attorney, and his wife, Louise Ortman Gross, contrib-uted heavily toward the construction of the school. Although they had no children of their own, the couple were strong supporters of Catholic education.

According to the Gross website, the Archdiocese of Omaha, with the help of the Grosses, built the school to meet the need for Catholic education in Sarpy County and southern Douglas County. Today, about half of the enrolled students are Sarpy County residents.

Gross Catholic High School follows the Marianist tradition. The Society of Mary is an international religious order of brothers, priests and laity. Blessed William Joseph Chaminade founded the Society of Mary in 1817, and the Marian-ists have had a U.S. presence since 1849.

The first Gross freshman class in 1968 had 175 enrolled students. Today, 425 students walk the halls. As the only Catho-lic high school in Sarpy County, Gross Catholic High School offers students a unique academic experience.

“We are based in the Marianist tradition, and that offers a unique family community,” said Ellen Poly, alumni and communications director and 2005 graduate of Gross. “I believe our co-ed atmosphere reflects the real world, and our students develop a lifelong relation-ship with the school.”

Poly studied at the University of

Nebraska - Lincoln before returning to her alma mater.

“I believe in the education you get here,” Poly said. “I wanted to be a part of that, except this time in a more in-depth capacity.”

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the bloodlines run deep through Gross Catholic alums. More than 30 percent of the current enrollment has at least one parent who attended Gross.

The school evolved as enrollment and technology took off. Over the years, renovations have included the gym, commons area, auditorium and an addition to the Media Center.

The introduction of the laptop program in 2001 also changed the classroom dynamic.

The laptop program began with 21 students testing the theory that laptops have a rightful place in the classroom. Today every student is issued a personal laptop for note-taking and to utilize online resources.

“We saw what was coming with technol-ogy and wanted to make sure our students were prepared,” Poly said.

Technology also influenced the way teachers taught in the classroom. They learned new skills to apply to the standard curriculum.

The adaptation of technology prepares students for real-world experience, Poly said.

One of the Marianist characteristics on which the school was founded is “educate for adaptation and change.” The use of

technology has helped Gross incorporate new and innovative ways of teaching in the classroom.

Although the school does not currently have any major renovation plans, each new school year holds infinite possibilities for change and adaptation. — Valerie Koehler

The evolution of office design is much like most things – it changes from decade to

decade. Long gone is the time when dark-stained woods adorned office spaces. Today most businesses want a streamlined design with crisp, clean lines. Whether the topic is fabric color or wood grain finishes, office design is characterized by visual differences.

Dave Ballard of Indoff Office Fur-niture has been in the business since 1980, when he sold office furniture at Sheppard’s Business Interiors. Ballard has enough experience in office design that he can recognize the era of a piece just by looking at the wood finish.

He eventually moved to a home-based office design business with Indoff in 1995. Indoff Office Furniture is a business consisting of mainly home-based sales agents who have the ability to sell office furnishings at a deeply discounted price point due to little or no overhead cost.

“I can offer affordable prices for office equipment because I have few overhead costs. I am able to use my customer’s offices as my showrooms,” Ballard said.

Prior to the 1970s, offices were haphazardly arranged, without much thought to office efficiencies or ergonomics.

With the introduction of the panel system (cubicles) in the 1970s and ’80s, companies were able to use the square footage of an area more efficiently.

This era is characterized by two major design features: standing privacy height and reception height. The first is identified by 65-inch-tall panels, while the second system is 42 inches high.

As technology advanced, so did office design. Computers began driving the design of offices in the 1980s and ’90s. And ergonomics began influencing workspace design as the computer age moved forward.

“Ergonomics has become its own science,” Ballard said.

Also during this time, taller panels began being used in telemarketing. The manufacturers began to evolve the circuit design to maximize efficiency of the workspace.

Glass paneling began emerging in the 1990s. The paneling allowed privacy for the employee with the flexibility of consistent supervision.

As the environment became more of a concern and recycling became more popular, office equipment manufacturers looked for ways to reduce waste. Remanufactured furniture took off in the 2000s. Businesses could cut costs by taking the paneling they already owned and refurbishing it by stripping the paint and removing the fabric to rebuild the pre-owned materials. This allowed business owners to update their call center or office space while keeping costs at a minimum.

In the 1970s, imported products were unreliable, costly and slow to arrive after being ordered. But today, imported wholesale products are of good quality, are more readily available and are reasonably priced.

As technology drives everyday life, so too will it drive the design and manufacture of office equipment.

Ballard said imported products will continue to grow in popularity and refurbished material will be used more in the future. He also predicts that posh, high-end furniture will set the tone in office space design, with fabric and textures continuing to evolve and change. — Valerie Koehler

BUSINESS/DEVELOPMENT

It’s no secret that Sarpy County is growing.

It is being transformed from a mainly rural area to one that is more suburban.

New development can be found from one end of the county to the other.

Be it commercial or residential, Sarpy County is thriving.

Home to nearly 166,000 people, accord-ing to a 2012 estimate by the United States Census, Sarpy is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state.

Don Bellino, owner of Bellino Enter-prises, attributes the growth to the many positives within the county.

“People want to live here,” Bellino said. “The schools, good shopping and good quality of living work to bring people in.”

Bellino, who started his development and real estate business more than 30 years ago when he purchased small residential properties, gradually grew his holdings to include larger apartment communities, retail sites and parcels of land.

In fact, Bellino is in the planning stages of a new development at 96th Street and Cornhusker Road. Plans for the roughly 25 acres include about 30,000 square feet of retail space and a higher-end apartment complex with about 350 units.

With new housing filling in quickly in new neighborhoods, such as Shadow Lake and Settler’s Creek, nearby development is ramping up too.

Several new office buildings in recent years help illustrate the recent growth, plus one of the largest credit unions in the metro area is building a new headquarters in the county.

“Growth creates more growth. The more we have the more we’ll get,” Bellino said. “It’s a snowball effect.”

More homes, or “rooftops” as Bellino called them, bring more families that draw in more businesses and jobs.

All of the population growth has also created a need for more city staff and a bit more regulation in the cities of Sarpy County.

“We need oversight,” Bellino said. But in his view, the added regulations have had the negative effect of slowing the planning stage of projects.

Bellino went on to point out, however, that many positives are happening in the county right now.

“All in all a very awesome environ-ment,” he said, referring to the potential for more growth and development within the county.

Things don’t seem to be slowing down. And, Bellino said he sees nothing but great things for the future of Sarpy County. — Tom Knox

Understanding our history can help us understand how we got where we are.

That’s what Emerging Terrain and its project, Shifting Thresholds, is all about.

The organization, a nonprofit research and design collaboration with its office located at 1717 Vinton St. in Omaha, is working to get the public engaged in what shapes the developed environment around them.

Shifting Thresholds is a two-year study that looked at the history of Sarpy County and its land use and development.

The study, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, concluded with a report that was com-pleted in 2012.

Leading this project is Anne Trumble, Emerging Terrain director, who has strong ties to Sarpy County.

She grew up in rural Papillion where her family continues to farm. Her family

FUTURE VISIONThe Emerging Terrain organization is

planning a seminar in collaboration with the UniversityofNebraska-LincolnCollegeofArchitecture,LandscapeArchitecture,and

Community and Regional Planning, and the Rural Futures Institute.

Using the work done in the research phase of the Shifting Thresholds project, the goal

of the seminar will be to create the basis and a brief for a national design competition.

homesteaded there in the late 1800s.Trumble Park Elemen-tary School is named after relatives.

The purpose of the project was “to make accessible a better understanding of why we have the forms of development that we have,” Trumble said.

Though the study wasn’t intended to be projective, there is a great deal to learn from it.

As communities in the Midwest expand and become more suburban, Emerging Terrain was interested in how that development has changed over time.

Trumble also gave eight presentations throughout the county about the research and findings.

According to the organization’s website, land ownership parcels created by the Homestead Act of 1862, and other

initiatives such as the Public Land Survey System of 1851 (otherwise known as the Jeffersonian Grid), continue to drive land development today.

But about those Jeffersonian sections. There are 253 of them in the county, and the project, an in-depth mapping study, looked at the ownership history of each one.

The sections, about one square mile each, are still influenc-ing development patterns today.

“We are still developing on that, rather than actually capitalizing on resources,” Trumble said.

Those resources include logistical networks, natural resources and human capital, according to Trumble.

“We could be rocking it,” she said. — Tom Knox

More knowledgeAnne Trumble, seen above, gave several presentation accross Sarpy county to inform

the community about what was learned from the study, Shifting Thresholds. To learn more about Emerging Terrain, the Shifting Thresholds project and other

projects, go to emergingterrain.org. One of the organization’s most visible projects is seen by thousands of travelers every day on Interstate 80 in Omaha. Stored Potential,

according to the organization’s website, is a “large-scaleinstallationre-purposingaprominent grain elevator no longer used for its original purpose.”

Before something is made, it has to be designed. That, in essence, is what engineers do.

The bridge that commuters drive over every day had to be drawn out, with costs, safety, weather, traffic flow and many other factors taken into consid-eration.

The pulley, lever and wheel are early examples of tools designed by engineers.

Some of the most well-known engineering feats include the pyramids of Egypt and the Roman aqueducts.

Engineers search for solutions that will meet needs in cost-effective ways.

“At the end of the day, these solutions must address our clients’ problems,” said Jeff Elliott, an engineer with E & A Consulting Group Inc. and a board member of the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce.

Elliott also pointed out many recent projects across Sarpy County.

Public projects have included the 108th Street viaduct and the 48th Street bridge over the Papillion Creek. Some private projects include development of land for single-family homes, commercial and mixed uses.

Engineers used to come up with designs by hand, but that has changed with advances in technology. “Thirty years ago, when I started out, I relied on my

calculator, pencil and paper rather than a computer,” Elliott said.

GPS has been put to use in surveying, which results in increased accuracy. “Survey crews now consist of one or two team members who rely on GPS to measure distances and set points,” said Elliott.

Technology, including the use of smartphones and tablets, also has made communication between engineers and their clients more efficient.

Engineers can quickly make changes to digital documents that are viewable by all involved in the process.

“Technology can’t replace experi-ence, but it does allow the engineering disciplines to work together,” said Douglas E. Kellner, an engineer with TD2 engineering & surveying.

Engineering will continue to evolve, as it has since the pyramids were built.

Energy efficiencies will be an area of continual improvement, Elliott said.

Water management will remain an important concern for communities in Sarpy County. It will take engineer-ing know-how to wisely manage that resource. — Tom Knox

Your house, the neighbor-hood school and that bank you stop at on your way

home and had to be built by someone.

The way buildings are con-structed has changed over time.

To fully understand the history of construction, the study of building techniques and architecture should be reviewed. Gaining an understanding of the social and economic dynamics of builders and workers is helpful to the task, along with a review of how construction machinery has changed over time.

Homes and other structures have often been built using materials that were readily available.

For instance, early settlers on the prairie built sod homes to protect themselves from the elements.

Lumber, due to its relatively

low cost, ease of use and avail-ability, tends to be the building material for many projects, and has been for hundreds of years.

In recent years environmen-tally friendly and sustainable materials have become more prevalent in construction, and the uses for recycled materials in new structures is limited only by the imagination.

LEED-certified buildings are becoming more common. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is in its most basic sense a third-party verified green building.

Lueder Construction has served as general contractor on such a project. “We built the Nebraska Army National Guard facility in Columbus, which was LEED-certified Gold,” said Brad von Gillern of Lueder Construc-tion.

— even entire neighborhoods — can be LEED-certified.Construction efficiency has helped reduce the amount of

waste going into landfills in the process saving money for builders and their clients.

Using prefabricated sections or walls of a building can ease the building process for all kinds of on-site construction. For example, entire homes can be built off site, with their sections brought together on site.

So-called big box stores and structures such as office buildings often include the use of concrete panels that were fabricated in another location and brought to the site for installation. Thus, saving time in the construction process.

“Technology really has enabled our industry to become much more efficient with the time and delivery of our projects and services,” said Mike Matthews Jr. of All Purpose Con-struction.

All Purpose has worked on small and large projects, such as water treatment plants, libraries and food service establish-ments.

With all of these projects, communication is vital between the builders, the architects, city planners and others.

In recent years, with the advent of smart phones and other devices, the lines of communication have never been so efficient.

Together, modern materials and advancement of technology have enabled work to move along during the winter months, Matthews said. — Tom Knox
