Key water quality issues include impacts on the aquatic environment of:
- the effects of agricultural management (e.g. wetland drainage, tillage, irrigation) on hydrological processes (in particular with respect to extremes) and water quality (including salinity)
- point source and diffuse nutrient pollution from agriculture, including the management of fertilizers and manures
-urban discharges of nutrients

Other urban pollution issues – e.g. stormwater runoff chemistry, temperature, pharmaceuticals
Other ag pollution issues – e.g. herbicides, manures, E. coli, cryptosporidium, vet pharmaceuticals?
Groundwater quality – important for rural water supplies, generally agreed needs research, clearly quality is linked to recharge processes

One focal point is eutrophication of Lake Diefenbaker; work is also planned at Swift Current creek

AESA Surface water quality guidelines for the protection of
aquatic life were exceeded nearly 90% of the time for total phosphorus and 85% of the time for total nitrogen in Alberta’s high intensity agricultural watersheds.
There are concerns about possible cumulative impacts of the various herbicides found in the water.
Critical source areas, or areas with high nutrient levels and risk of runoff, are likely responsible for the majority of phosphorus losses from agricultural land.

AESA Recommendations Alberta’s agriculture industry must focus efforts on
reducing nutrient loads from agricultural lands into watersheds through improved on-farm and critical source area management.
Develop surface water quality targets for nutrients in agricultural watersheds that are achievable, protective, and allow for sustainability in the long term given best agri-environmental management practices.
Assess the impacts of low levels of multiple pesticide residues in surface waters on aquatic ecosystem health.
