Pilton & Its Festival
Pilton is a self-contained community within Barnstaple which enjoys a unique villageatmosphere.
The Festival is in the tradition of the legendary charter granted by Edward III in 1344 fora market and fair in Pilton and today it continues to provide a great spectacle of fun, festivities and feasting for people of all ages. It also serves as a valuable platform forlocal charities to raise awareness and funds.
The Festival could not take place without the skill and dedication of a hardworkingCommittee. This band of unpaid volunteers give up their time for all our enjoyment. The Festival is non-profit making and we are eternally grateful to the generosity ofeveryone who has sponsored and supported the committee’s fundraising.
Please support our advertisers throughout the coming year as without them we couldnot produce this programme or festival. Our programme is part funded by CommunityCouncillor Grants from North Devon Cllrs Greenslade and Manuel we thank them fortheir continued support. If you feel you are able to help with next year’s festival inany way please contact us via our email [email protected] orDave Butt (Festival Chairman) - 01271 343562.

FESTIVAL DAY BEGINSUp with the lark are the festival committee and their helpers to setup Pilton Street, Rotary Garden and the Stages. Bins to put out, marquees to erect, participants to be directed to their positions forthe day. Bacon butties and a mug of tea wouldn’t go amiss!
THE PROCESSIONThe Procession starts from Barnstaple Square at 10.45am andmakes its way along the High Street, then Pilton Causeway andprocesses up Pilton Street, turning right into Pilton House Grounds.Look for the large Red and Green Masks leading the way!
THE PAGEANT(Pilton House Grounds 12 noon and 3pm)
The Green Man is an ancient Pagan symbol of nature and fertilityfrequently depicted in carvings in old churches as a face sproutingfoliage. A splendid green man carving can be seen in St Mary theVirgin Church in Pilton.
The Prior of the Benedictine Priory of Pilton lived at The Bull Housebelow the Church until the reformation. The ritual enacted at PiltonFestival is believed to represent the initial antagonism of twocharacters, Prior and Green Man, represented by Red and GreenMasks and the subsequent inclusion of the pagan figure within thechurch. Under the direction of Bev Neighbour, it takes place on thelawn in front of Pilton House at 12 noon and again at 3pm.

Central to Green Man Day is PiltonStreet, with the hustle and bustleamongst the stalls, the arrival ofthe procession and a day of musicfrom the three stages.
In recent years, festivities haveexpanded in to the comfort ofRotary Gardens, a splendid settingfor family-based activities withchildren’s soft-play and free-playareas and a hand-cranked Victorianmerry-go-round.
Dotted amongst the trees, artsand craftsmen will demonstratetheir skills and local interestgroups and charities will ‘setout their stalls’. The enchantinginteractive family friendly story-tellers Entertainingly Differentwill be performing throughout
