Molonglo Valley Markets - Sunday 9 December

Neighbourhood watch over the holiday period

Going into the summer holidays it is important to remain vigilant with home safety. You may notice different people in your neighbourhood. Here are a number of things you can do to try and deter thieves from your home.

l Trim bushes and trees that obscure windows and could be used as hiding places by intruders.

l Never leave keys hidden outside your home; leave them with a trusted neighbour or friend. Alternatively get a key holder that can be bolted outside and only opened by a number code.

pre-christmas inspiration on offer. You can also have a coffee and catch up with your community.

For more information email [email protected]

l Don’t leave garden tools lying around; always keep them in a locked shed or garage.

l Join your local Neighbourhood Watch and be an active part of crime prevention in your community.

l Lock doors and windows even when you are at home – unlocked side and rear doors and windows are common entry points for burglars.

l Put a padlock on your back gate and letter box.

Get to know your neighbours and look out for each other. If you see someone you don’t recognise in your neighbourhood, say a quick hello and see who they are visiting.

As we approach the beginning of summer, it is important to remember to look after your garden, street tree, and your verge. A simple spray of the hose or spritz from your watering can and mowing of verges (nature strip), can really improve the life of the plants and look of your area.

Community Information Night

On Thursday 1 November we hosted another successful Community Information Night for the Molonglo Valley community. These information nights are run every six months and are an opportunity for residents to come along and hear about what’s happening within your local area. We had over 1,000 residents tune in at home to the Facebook page to watch the live videos. Minister Yvette Berry and Suburban Land Agency, CEO John Dietz along with number of representatives from across government, local businesses and community groups came to present updates. Some of the updates given related to Coombs shops, public transport, current developments, crime and safety, environment and community activities and events. If you missed the night, don’t worry you can still view these updates on Molonglo Valley Mingle Facebook page and on the Suburban Land Agency Website.

Following on from the Molonglo Valley Community Information Night, a five minute survey has been created by the Suburban Land Agency to gather thoughts and input from the Wright and Coombs community on the opportunity for a pop-up cafe in the area.

This survey will help the Suburban Land Agency support the local residents in the absence of local shops/cafes in the area through a possible temporary option.

The survey is open until COB Tuesday 27 November 2018.You can complete the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Pop-UpCafe

Mingle is working on an exciting new initiative for the Molonglo Valley community. In partnership with Charles Weston School and the wider community we would like to produce a Cultural Cookbook featuring recipes and stories from around the world. The focus will be on all of the cultures embedded right here in the Molonglo Valley area.

The idea of this project came about when there was an interest among many students, families and staff at Charles Weston School to gain a deeper understanding of the many cultural backgrounds were within the community. The production of this book will aim to connect, understand and celebrate the diversity within students, families, staff and the broader Molonglo Valley Community.

The students at Charles Weston School along with, grandparents, parents and carers have already started the collection of recipes and cooking some of these in the school Passions and Pursuits cooking class.

People living within Molonglo Valley are invited to share their favourite recipes as well as some information about their cultural heritage. To submit a recipe and share some information, please head to www.suburbanland.act.gov.au/molonglo/cultural-cookbook and complete the form or email us at [email protected]

The community had a great time at the resident-led Diwali event on Saturday 3 November 2018. Here are some highlights below.

Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes wrinkles and skin and eye damage, ultimately leading to skin cancer. UV cannot be seen or felt. It is not like the sun’s light which we see, or the sun’s warmth (infrared radiation) which we feel. Our senses cannot detect UV so it can be damaging without us knowing.
