school, she expanded her knowledge of sheep in al aspects – designing

and making ewe – nique items from sheepskins. She opened a small

myself bought our first Alpacas, since then we now have 36 Alpacas and one Llama. I

skirt, wash, card and spin my own fiber. We participate in local markets, fairs, Alpaca

Days and the Boone County farm stroll.

Sharon Krengel: Over twenty years ago I saw a skein of hand spun yarn and fell in love with it. I wanted

to do that! After a number of calls to the local feed and seed and then to some shepherds, I was

introduced to Toni Neil of The Fold, just outside of Marengo, where I took my first spinning lessons. Taking

the raw fiber fresh from the farm, washing, carding, and blending them, spinning and then knitting or

weaving the final product, has always given me great pleasure. I have been a member of the Hollow Tree

Spinners guild for a number of years and enjoy meeting with other fiber artists at the Woodstock Starbucks

on Tuesday mornings.

Bex Oliger: Bex was raised in her mother’s weaving and natural dying studio

(Hillcreek Fiber Studio). She has been involved in learning, teaching, and vending at

Fiber Arts Festivals for over 30 years. Bex is currently a Knitwear designer and owner

of Hillcreek Yarn Shope in Columbia, Mo.

Janette H. Neal-Zopp: Janette has been doing Fiber arts for over 45 years, in many areas which include

Felting, sewing, spinning, weaving, basketry, embroidery, needle punch, and caning. Holds 5 certificates in

faux finishing and decorative painting, has done Sculptures in clay, wood, and wood. Studies and

practices Russian Iconography.

As a Re-enactor, she demonstrates and teaches hand works of women pre 1840. “Our Art today was their

way of life then.” She makes her own historically correct clothing and custom orders for others. Her Art

work has been published in several magazines and books. She presents programs and teaches at Grade

schools, Adult continuing education programs, fiber guilds, clubs and other private venues. She can be

contacted at [email protected] or by phone at 262-949-7377.

Esther Peregrine: Esther started knitting in 4-H and from there went on to spin

and weave just about every fiber available. She started raising silkworms about 10

years ago and fell in love with the whole process of watching the silkworms spin

their cocoons and then processing the cocoons into yarn or thread and ultimately

into a finished silk scarf or shirt. She has demonstrated silk reeling at schools and

museums and has taught workshops on making silk mawatas (hankies and caps).

Silke Sordyl: Silke Sordyl was born and raised in Germany. She has lived in McHenry County, Illinois for

two and a half years now. Silke has been working with wool since she was 14 years old. She lives on a

small farm with sheep, goats, alpacas and llamas. Her favorite fiber activity is using needle and wet felting

skills she has learned from the Waldorf School in the craft cycle to create beautiful and extremely detailed

Gnomes and Fairies.

Shirley Walter: My husband and I own a small farm approximately 40 miles south of Chicago, Illinois. I

started raising sheep on this farm, for 4-H, in 1955. I married my husband in 1966 and helped out four

children to row, prosper, and now enjoy the 9 grandchildren we have as well as my hobby. Her hobby is

raised Natural Colored Romney sheep. We entered pure bred show sheep and attended some of the top

shows around the Midwest. Local county fairs, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky state fairs, as well as the

North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. After many years of showing we

decided to slow down and I purchased a Union 36 weaving loom. One thing has led to another and I now

weave rugs, handbags, and other craft items from our own processed fleeces. We have eleven older ewes

and I sell wool rovings and raw fleeces. I started felting about four years ago to use more of my wool for

different applications. Many questions from different people about my birds, and ornaments, and felting in

general, allowed me to do several class/demonstrations for an organization I belong to known as the

Weaver’s Guild South. I enjoy showing and teaching the process to children as well as adults. Visit us at

our Willow Pond Farm booth. Check out our many natural colored wool items, from our sheep, at this

year’s festival. We are excited about the new location and visiting old friends.

Erin Whalen: Erin is a life-long fiber artist who loves crochet, spinning, weaving, wet felting, and needle

felting. She is an experienced instructor and enjoys teaching both children and adults. Erin’s crocheted

and wet felted pieces have won awards at several local fiber art events. Her needle felted dolls will be

published in a Nation-wide magazine in the fall of 2017.
