John BellewPartner, Head of Private Equity, Africa: Bowman Gilfillan

John has advised prominent South African and international private equity houses on some of the largest private equity transactions undertaken in the South African market. He has represented private equity borrowers and high yield lenders and has formed a number of private equity funds with a focus on South and Sub-Saharan Africa. His expertise has been recognised by various international research organizations including Chambers Global (Corporate/ M&A) and Legal 500 (Corporate M&A; Investment Funds; Private Equity). John is a founder member of the AVCA Legal and Regulatory Committee and a member of the SAVCA Legal and Regulatory Committee.

Dr Francois LaurensChief Investment Officer: BEVCO Investment Trust

Francois has wide experience in financial services, investment management, corporate governance, and risk and credit management, having served in executive management positions in the financial sector in SA and the UK, including: Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of the BEVCO Investment Trust (Isle of Man/Jersey), Head of Investment Banking at ABSA CIB, senior-executive Cross-border M&A, Standard Bank London and senior-executive Corporate Finance, Nedbank. Prior to this, Francois practiced as an attorney for more than a decade. Francois is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Banbury Trust and a visiting Faculty at the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

Nicole PaigePartner, Private Equity Sector Co-Head: Webber Wentzel

Nicole Paige specialises in the formation of alternative investment funds. She has advised and acted for local and international private equity and venture capital houses looking to raise funds for deployment in South Africa as well as in Africa generally and also for limited partners looking to invest in those funds. Her experience in fund formation, which has been recognised by various international research organisations including Chambers Global and Legal 500, includes the full spectrum of generalist and sector funds, including buyout, real estate, debt, housing, healthcare, infrastructure, listed and renewable energy funds. She also advises on all regulatory aspects of investment funds as well as tax structuring of funds.

Samantha PokroyChief Executive Officer: Sanari Capital

Samantha is the founder and CEO of Sanari Capital, a private equity firm specialising in founder-run businesses and fund manager for Section 12J fund, Sanari Growth Partners. Samantha has over eleven years of private equity and venture capital experience in the SA and US markets. She played a leading role in investments at Ethos Private Equity, which she joined in 2006. Previously, Samantha worked at a Chicago-based private equity firm and in investment banking and consulting in New York. Samantha holds an MBA (Hons) (Chicago Booth), BCom (Wits), BA Honours (Industrial Psychology)(Wits) and a CFA. She serves on several industry bodies to promote entrepreneurship.

Vuyisa QabakaInvestor Relations: Uprise.Africa

Vuyisa Qabaka heads up partnership and investor relations at equity crowdfunding platform, Uprise Africa. He is also a startup advisor and angel investor with investments in fintech, traveltech, e-commerce and agriculture startups. He is regularly featured in the local media through his column in the Business Report and past television work. He has traveled extensively to various startup ecosystems and his contribution to the local tech ecosystem include SABAN,The Bandwidth Barn, SiMODiSA and Ventureburn where he is a regular contributor.

Lelo RantloaneChief Executive Officer: Ata Capital

Lelo is the founding CEO of Ata Capital. Prior to this he was Head of Debt Capital Markets and structured debt at Deutsche Bank AG. He began his career with RMB as a Transactor in Debt Capital Markets and later became a Transactor in Acquisition and Leveraged Finance where he focused on Private Equity firms. While at RMB, he was Executive Assistant to the CEOs of FirstRand and FirstRand Bank. Lelo also worked for Morgan Stanley’s Securitised Product Group in London and as a Transactor (on secondment) at the Makalani Management Company.

Tanya van LillChief Executive Officer: Southern African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association

Tanya is the Chief Executive Officer of the Southern African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (SAVCA) focusing on being the voice of the private equity and venture capital asset classes in Southern Africa. Prior to this, Tanya was the Director for Academic Programmes at GIBS and a member of the Executive MBA Council. Although a specialist in learning, leadership development, human behaviour, programme design and business management, Tanya regards herself to be a professional manager having worked in various positions at GIBS since joining the organisation in 2007. Through her work at GIBS, Tanya has been exposed to numerous industries, had the privilege to travel extensively and coached various teams on their action learning projects. Prior to GIBS, Tanya worked at Standard Bank and FNB in the areas of people development. Tanya holds an MBA from GIBS where her research focused on methods to develop a global mindset.
