VOLUME XIII, AUGUST, 2009 SAY GOODBYE TO SUMMER? Well, here we are almost through summer and everyone kept wondering when it would arrive. This has been a most unusual summer and certainly we have not had the heat that we expected. My comments in our June newsletter just were wide of the mark. The only consolation is that our Pyrs have not had to suffer through the heat waves we normally come to expect. So I guess there have not been as many holes to fill. Bonus for all?? But just when we were thinking it was all over, we have been hit with a heat wave and summer has arrived with a vengeance. Lets hope we have a really nice next several weeks and a smooth transition into a long, warm fall. In June, you were advised that a number of members had been nominated to stand for the up-coming elections and that ballots would be mailed out in July. However, only two people agreed to run, Norma Egginton and Sandra Young, so they both have been elected through acclimation. Thanks to all our members who took the time to consider and nominate members and to our members who considered whether they could accept such nominations. There are always time commitments and other obligations (including just plain living) that preclude us from standing at a specific point in our lives. It is often a difficult decision to make that you just do not have sufficient time to devote to volunteering, even when you want to help and we appreciate that you carefully thought about it enough to decline. We hope that next year, more members will be available to run.

SAY GOODBYE TO SUMMER? Well, here we are almost through summer and everyone kept wondering when it would arrive. This has been a most unusual summer and certainly we have not had the heat that we expected. My comments in our June newsletter just were wide of the mark. The only consolation is that our Pyrs have not had to suffer through the heat waves we normally come to expect. So I guess there have not been as many holes to fill. Bonus for all?? REMINDER: Membership renewals are now due.

Membership renewal forms were sent out to all applicable parties and we would request that you complete and return as soon as possible.

A.G.M. – Sunday, September 20, 2009,

Mohawk Park, Brantford, Ontario

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2009, at Mohawk Park, Brantford, Ontario starting at 11:00 a.m. We will be in Shelter E, which is right by a parking lot.

Mohawk Park is a lovely setting, complete with gorgeous mature trees providing lots of shade for our Pets. Following the meeting, there will a POT LUCK LUNCH and then a Dog Walk with our pets. As this park is well attended by local residents, be prepared to answer lots of questions about our Breed. As always, such a large herd of our magnificent dogs will attract lots of attention. Our AGM is being held during Responsible Dog Ownership Week sponsored by the Canadian Kennel Club, which focuses on letting the public know about breeds and dog ownership. I am sure that our presence will be a great representative of what it means to own and care for dogs.

Unfortunately, we have not received any news items for our two sections - Pyrs

and Their People and Pyrs’ Peers. Pyrs and Their People focuses on an individual Pyr and how it is giving back to the community or interacting in a positive way with the community. Pyrs’ Peers deals with regional news and groups of Pyrs and their community. Let us know what is happening in your area and showcase your dogs. We never tire of sharing.

As stated before, 2010 is our 75th Anniversary of breeders/owners showing Pyrs in Canada. We are looking for any information, memorabilia or memories that you might have about Pyrs in Canada over the last 75 years. We are planning on publishing a Booklet showing this achievement, so anything that you can think of or let us have pictures of to enhance the Booklet would be greatly appreciated.

Stay tuned for further developments and updates of events that are being planned

to celebrate.

IN OTHER NEWS Our Pyrs never cease to amaze others and us. They truly do devote their lives to our safety and protection. The following is an article originally published in the Dayton Daily News, Dayton, Ohio. The Reporter is Nancy Bowman. Our thanks to them for allowing us to re-print this article.

PIQUA — Glenda Moss saved Jeter after an early life of abuse. Jeter paid her back Thursday, June 11.

Piqua. Smelling smoke and hearing the crackle of fire, mother and son fled the house around 6 a.m. with Jeter following. For an unknown reason, the 120-pound dog went back into the house and perished.

Moss was sleeping in a recliner in the living room when Jeter, who usually slept in the bay window nearby, “was right up in my face, all over me,” she said. “I tried to shove him away, then I smelled the smoke.” Moss ran down the hall to wake up David before they fled through the front door.

“For some reason, (Jeter) turned around and went back in the house,” Moss said. She went back in briefly to find him. “I couldn’t see him. It was so smoky, I couldn’t find him, so I had to come back out.”

Named after New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, the dog had lived with the family for about three years. Piqua firefighters said the blaze started in the garage and spread to the house, causing heavy damage to the structure and two cars — losses estimated at $90,000. The cause is under investigation. “They got lucky,” Mike Rindler, assistant fire chief, said, because there were no smoke detectors in the house — other than Jeter.

Moss said Jeter came to the family from the humane society in Shelby County about three years ago. The wife of her boss, knowing the family had lost another Great Pyrenees to illness, brought him to Glenda.

“He’d had such a tough time. He’d been starved, beaten and abused,” Glenda Moss said, sobbing as friends and neighbors stopped by after hearing of the fire. “My dog was just amazing.”

Is your dog a Canine Good Neighbour Graduate? Do you want to show the world that your Great Pyr passed? Although it is nice to have the Certificate and a Badge, most of us do not have anywhere to showcase that our Pyr is a CGN graduate. Badges and Certificates can be mounted and displayed in our house – available for viewing only to guests and family. Badges can be sewn on bandanas or in the case of therapy dogs, on their vests. But for the rest of us, people we meet have no idea of how good our dogs are. At our last Canine Good Neighbour Testing, we ordered a Pet I.D. Tag available to those who passed and we have some left over. If your dog is a CGN Graduate and you would like one of these gorgeous tags, they are for sale, at a cost of $15.00 each (shipping included). All we need is proof that your dog passed. We will have the tags available

at the AGM as well. Just bring your certificate. These tags are a lovely piece of “bling” for your dog and are sure to garner questions from the public. What a great way to show how proud you are of your pet and let the world know how trained these animals are.

IN MEMORIUM

Shasta After a nine- month battle with osteosarcoma, Shasta is now at rest. She failed dramatically over the weekend (July 25-26, 2009), making the decision easier for us and allowing enough time to get her to Melanie Brooks, her oncology technician at the OVC, who made sure her "jet" flight to doggie heaven (as her young son would say) was as comforting to all of us as possible. She went fast asleep with the sun shining and Steve and I and her medical team patting her in the courtyard of the OVC. A couple of birds (aka Shasta's national security threats) gave a brief tribute moments later. We have had many animals over the years but never the honour of a presence like Shasta. She was the most empathetic, intuitive spirit we've ever been blessed with. You have all been involved in her care in one way or another, over her 9 1/2 years and I would like to thank you for all your wonderful efforts. Mimi Ehrlich and David Manuel of Ajax Animal Hospital - Mimi who looked horrified the day we walked in with a Great Pyrenees, but was won over by Shasta in no time and David who was always amazed at Shasta's heart rate and health. And both of whom had to put up with my "what if" questions for years. Carol Graham, THE Pyrenees vet, of Graham Animal Hospital in Hillsburgh, who, many years ago, was kind enough to x-ray Shasta's ACL without anaesthesia and most recently listened to me grieve the inevitable. Tara Edwards and Karen Bardecki, of Pet Hospital on Main in Uxbridge - Tara who started the search into why Shasta's leg was sore, and Karen, who worked through her lunch to do the biopsy on Shasta's leg when we feared it was osteosarcoma so that we could get her into the OVC as quickly as possible - as well as their staff who were constantly filling prescriptions for us. I think the importance of bringing Shasta to Melanie this morning speaks volumes. They had formed a special bond while Melanie worked successfully to get us as much time, with as good a quality of life for Shasta as possible. We have become close over the past nine months and I will miss Melanie very much. Her ability to be so professional yet incorporate so much caring into what she does is amazing. I must say though that when I do think of Shasta and Melanie together, it is generally with Melanie being pulled down the hall by a 100 lb. bag of fluff :). And to summer student Steve who is working with Melanie as he studies to be an oncologist. and who was kind enough to stay with us while we put Shasta to rest - You have chosen an honourable profession - please keep at it. As you can see from this email, all these people have touched our lives and have been very important to us. The work they do is not "just another job" - their professions mean something. Thank you all for helping us to care for such a wonderful girl. In her memory, please encourage people to consider the oncology program at the OVC should their pets be diagnosed with cancer. It allowed Shasta to make more snow angels and lounge by the pool with us longer than we ever could have dreamed. I would be pleased to speak with any of your clients who may need insight to the program. Kindest regards and may you each be blessed with just one wonderful Shasta in your lives, Mavis Calow
