    Highlights of Community Preferences

    1. All Facilities on Site

    2. MS / HS Interaction - Share Outdoors / Separate

    Indoors

    3. New High School over New Middle School

. rc tectura aracter: espect t e or g nafor any renovations, Draw from the region forany new building

    5. Relocate (in some form) Cannery and Cabin

    6. Use Green Features where appropriate

    Key Planning Assumptions

    All Facilities on Site

Separate Buildings for MS and HS

Shared Site Amenities (Parking and Athletic Fields)Cabin / Cannery Are Not Accommodated at Existing Location

    Masterplan Driven v. Funding Driven

    RRMM Architects

Re-Use What Makes Sense to Re-Use (Maximize Investment)

Existing Middle School Will Be Demolished

Awkward LocationPoor Programmatic Fit, One Story

    Excess Vehicular Entrances

    Limited Land Area 9

Would building a combined 6-12 school be

more cost effective than separate buildings?1. Valid considerationcombined schools often provide

increased efficiency in capital and operating costs

    2. However, typical advantages of a combined school donot apply at the Auburn Strand.

One large connected building could reduceflexibility to configure the site

Only a minor advantage in building efficiency

    3. 6-12 School is more costly it takes away theadvantage of renovating the existing High School.

    4. Combined school also reduces funding flexibility. 18

    Decisions Needed to Move Forward

    1. Confirm Enrollment Targets and Program (Buildingand Site) for both Middle and High Schools (Slides 4,5)

    2. Decide on overall approachRecommendation is for

New HS , Renovated HS to become MS, demolition ofexisting MS, and full site development.

    3. Confirm that Cannery and Cabin can be addressed

through some form of relocation4. Does the board want to consider options for limited

upgrades to the existing HS (to become a MS) at thistime to reduce the overall initial project cost?

    5. If yes to No. 4, more study is needed, and a masterplan is still recommended for the Middle School. Thiswould not delay the design of the High School.
