There have been NCEA exams to prepare for and sit, junior assessments to complete and reports to write. There have also been many wonderful Education Outside the Classroom experiences. Retreat experiences have been undertaken for years 7-10 students giving them a chance to reflect on the past year alongside their relationships and commitment to the values of St Bernard’s. We have also had music concerts, a Shakespearian drama production and successful summer sports encounters. At the recent Leaver’s Mass and dinner we bade farewell to all our Year 13 students and congratulated them on their graduation from St Bernard’s. They take with them our prayers and best wishes for a rewarding life ahead. The Gateway Programme would not be possible without the help of the employers. The partnership that we have with our employers is the key to the programme, enabling us to offer a wide variety of work experience and placements to our students. Students experience a taste of the real world through their work placements. This assists them greatly to make decisions about how to achieve their future goals. The Gateway luncheon is organised and put on by the Gateway team to formally thank those people who have put in time, during their busy work hours, to try and help our students. Some of our dedicated employers are; LT McGuiness Construction, The Warehouse Red Shirt Program, Freear Philip Construction, Dews Construction, NME Electrical, AEL Electrical, Placemakers Seaview, Noel Leeming, The Espresso Garden Café, Duncan McGregor’s Plumbing , Rebel Sport and Ss Peter and Paul School. The boys have learnt a lot about the different trades during their placements, and some have been offered employment and apprenticeships. We would really like to thank all our employers this year for their contribution and also to say well done to our boys who have made the most of the opportunities given to them. I would also like to acknowledge the Gateway team, headed by Jeanne Lomax, along with Vicki Foss, Elizabeth Thomson and myself Shaka Sola. Congratulations to Chris McDowell who is our Gateway top student for 2015.

This year the Languages Department has been involved in many interesting activities. Most recently the Yr 9 and 10 Japanese students travelled into Wellington to visit the Japan Information and Cultural Centre. There, we had a chance to look around the Centre, learn what is done there and had a presentation by the Education Officer. We also got to watch a clip on the Snow Monkeys of Nagano and voted on the Photo Competition being run at the moment. After the Centre visit we walked down to Fujiyama Teppanyaki and had a delicious 7 course lunch. It was very entertaining and a little messy at times. A great time was had by all.

The Yr 10 Samoan class went into Te Papa and spent a half day interacting with the Pacifica exhibits and learning spaces. The Yr 9 Samoan class got to do some cooking here at school and enjoyed making and eating koko alaisa, masi Samoa, sua fa’i and ethnic dishes from the different cultures represented in our Samoan class. We would like to thank the staff and parents who supported the classes with our EOTC opportunities this year and we look forward to more EOTC opportunities in 2016!

It was a good year for Drama at St Bernard’s College. Before the school year even began, a number of our boys took to the stage in January at Soundings Theatre in Te Papa where they were acting in a professional production of Helen Pearse-Otene’s play, The Ragged. Brandon Va’a’s performance garnered him great praise from the audience on the night I attended. I was incredibly proud of all the boys who reached a level of true professionalism. A real highlight this year was winning first place in the O’Shea Competition for Drama. The team consisted of John Ulu, Lio Soane, Troy McGuinness, Daniel Raju, Connor Bliss and Sam Su. Their drama was based on the biblical quote: “I have no silver and gold, but what I have I give you” from Acts 3:6. They conveyed a powerful message in their drama about how each of us can make a difference in the world through our deeds and by being present for people in need. We capped off 2015 with the Yr 10 Drama class performing Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The show was impressive with great work from the sound and light team. The actors were the real stars, however, mastering the language of Shakespeare and developing their acting skills over an entire term. The energy they put into the show was inspiring and despite being nervous about performing to a large audience, they did a marvellous job! In October we worked through auditions along with St Oran’s College and director Jim Moriarty and his team from Te Rakau Trust for our upcoming show in 2016, Dog & Bone. The show will take place in the first week of term 2 at The Little Theatre. We look forward to seeing you there! Wishing you all the very best for a safe and happy holiday season.

DramaDrama

This term has seen senior students complete assignments, portfolios and final performances alongside their preparation for examinations. Comments after the exams included, “Wow!! That was easier than what we did in class!!” – which indicates some pleasing development and increased confidence.

Samuelu Vaofusi was successful in his audition for a place in the Jazz Vocal programme at the New Zealand School of Music. This is a great achievement and we look forward to hearing more from Samuelu as his experience in Music broadens. Many Yr 7 and 8 students have taken advantage of opportunities in the Performing Arts. Julian Raphael of Community Music Junction had them singing beautifully at the Vocal Workshop. Tilomai Solia-O’Hara encouraged their dramatic tendencies in the Drama Workshop. A small group of boys prepared and participated in Vocal Outreach – an opportunity for students to sing (and dance!!) with local rest home residents. The boys and the residents thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon of sharing music. At the time of writing, we are yet to hear from the Yr 7-10 Music students at the end of year concert, the Jazz Band at the Senior Prize giving and Yr 10 Music class members at the Junior Prize giving and Closing Liturgy. I appreciate the continuation of music practice and preparations for performance at this busy time by these dedicated Music students. Merry Christmas!
