The oscillating weight, held down by a screw gib and made of antimagnetic alloy, is mounted on its axle located in the center of the movement and is free to swing in either direction. Whether the weight turns clockwise or counter- clockwise, winding of the mainspring occurs. Mounted on the train bridge, named for this reason, «combined bridge», the 'automatic mechanism consists of the oscillating weight and its gear, two reversing gear units which transmit winding to the crown and ratchet wheels by the intermediary of a reverser converting wheel, a reduction gear and a driving gear for crown wheel. Each reversing gear unit consists of a reversing gear and a reversing gear pinion, the latter being held in position by a spring. Whichever way the weight turns, the reversing gear meshes with the automatic train while the other slips. In any case, a fairly continuous self-winding action will follow. Should the watch be wound by stem and crown, the crown wheel will make the automatic train turn, but both reversing gear pinions will slip, therefore causing no inter- ference with the automatic mechanism. 1. The oscillating weight arbor issoldered to the combined bridge.In the rare case that it might benecessary to replace it, a new com-bined bridge is required.

2. The minute wheel spring has beenriveted to the pillar plate in order tomake sure that the watchmaker willnot lose it or forget to replace it afterservicing. It is, therefore, part of thepillar plate and not available sepa-rately.

3. Beryllium-made bushing for the toppivot of the sweep second wheel isfitted inside the bottom part of theoscillating weight arbor and for thatreason oiling is done through theoscillating weight arbor with anappropriate oiler. Bulova recommendoiling this bushing from under thebridge, before setting the latter.

Disassembling thewatch

UncasingExcluding the one-piece, «rnonocoque»cases, the movement is normally heldin the case by two casing clamps (191)and two casing screws (45C).

Removing the dialAfter removing the hands and releasingthe two lateral dial screws (47), thedial may be removed. The day star withdial disk (591) can be lifted up and afterremoving the three date indicatorguard screws (577), the day and datemechanisms can be removed.A dial rest (148) is used for day datewatches (caliber 11 ANACB) having aflat dial.

Checking the automatic gearBy moving the oscillating weight (344)in both directions, the transmission ofthe power from the oscillating weight(344) to the ratchet wheel (13) can bechecked.

Removing the oscillating weight

The oscillating weight is held in placeby a gib (343). To remove it, unscrewthe gib screw (336) and remove the gib.

Releasing the mainspring

With the oscillating weight (344)removed, the mainspring can be re-leased by simultaneously disengagingthe ratchet click (32) from the ratchetwheel (13) and pressing with a pointedtool on one arm of the breguet spring(326) through the hole made in theupper bridge for automatic device (341).Turn the winding crown one quarter of aturn forward and then let the automatictrain «run down" by turning the windingcrown slowly backwards.

NOTE: Simultaneous disengaging of theratchet click (32) from the ratchetwheel (13) and pressing on the breguetspring (326) can be done easily withone hand, using a tweezer sufficientlyopen to hold the ratchet click withone point and pressing on the breguetspring with the other.

Cleaning the escapementAs shown in figure 1, the balance andpallet are readily removed withoutdisassembling any other parts of themovement.

The mainspring barrelFigure 2 shows how easily the main-spring barrel (1S) is removed withoutdisassembly of the self-windingmechanism. The mainspring arbor mustmake six full turns before the brakespring slips, which represents a totalrunning time of over 40 hours.An unbreakable and life-time lubricatedmainspring -is used. Therefore, periodiccleaning of the barrel and mainspringis unnecessary.

RECOMMENDATION:Do not dismantle the mainspring barrel.In case of difficulty, replace the barrel(1S) complete.

Reassembling andoiling the watch

Dial side1. The functions of the winding

mechanism must be lubricated asusual.

2. The centre stud (106 C) requiresno lubricant, for the cannon pinion(94 A) must turn freely on the stud.

3. Lubricate the pivot of the minutewheel (8) and before setting the lat-ter, make sure that the minute wheelspring, which is riveted in the pillarplate, is properly set, i. e. that it ispressing against the pivot of theminute wheel.

4. After setting the minute work cock(9) it is very important to check theendshake and the freedom of thecannon pinion (94 A) and to makesure that the minute wheel spring ispressing the minute wheel againstthe cannon pinion (94 A).

Train side1. Before installing the gear train,

lubricate the cannon pinion of thelarge driving wheel (4 F) as shown

in figure 5. When setting the hands,the cannon pinion slips on thewheel, that is why it is necessary tomake sure that the friction (torque)between the cannon pinion and thewheel is correct. Neither too loose,nor too tight.

2. Install the gear train, the breguetspring (326) if removed, and affixthe combined bridge (226).NOTE: We recommend oiling thetop pivot of the sweep secondwheel (6 K) on the bushing fittedunder the oscillating weight arborBEFORE setting the bridge.

3. Install the mainspring barrel and itsbridge.

4. Lubricate gear train (if the topbushing for sweep second wheelhas not been oiled before settingthe bridge, lubricate through theoscillating weight arbor with anappropriate oiler).

5. Lubricate lower bearings of theautomatic train.

6. Lubricate reversing gear stud.

7. Lubricate teeth of both reversinggears.

8. Install automatic mechanism (asshown in figure 4) and lubricateupper pivots.

9. Install, lubricate and adjust asnecessary pallet and balanceassemblies with bridges.

10. Affix the osc.llatlnq weight andlubricate its arbor and gib.

Checking the automatic windingWind up the mainspring six turns. Holdthe movement or the watch in a verti-cal plane and turn it slowly round theaxis of the hands. The oscillating weightwill now wind up the mainspring and itshould drop under its own weightwithout being carried over the top.Malfunction may be caused byexces-sive tension of the breguet spring (326)or by friction elsewhere.

Checking the minute wheelspringAfter affixing the dial and hands, it isrecommended to check the functioningof the minute wheel spring by pushingforward the minute hand (clockwise)with the aid of a pegwood stick. Underthe tension of the minute wheel spring,the minute hand must always comeback to its original position. This isnecessary in order to overcome normalback-lash in the hands caused by thecannon pinion turning freely on thecenter stud.

NOTE: The cannon pinion (94 A) turningon the center stud (106 C), the pivotsof the pallet (57) and the pivoting postsof the day and date jumpers (586 and596) require no lubrication.

The day and datemechanism

Type

This movement is equipped with an«instant date change" mechanism,which means that the date indicatorjumps instantly at midnight, while theday disk starts moving slowly at about10 p. m., to change to the next day atapproximately midnight.

Disassembling and reassemblingBecause of the 'simplicity of the system,disassembly and reassembly of the dayand date mechanism can be donewithout any difficulty. However, to setthe day star with dial disk (591) whenreassembling the day and date mecha-nisms, it is important, to eliminatedamage of the finger of the date indi-cator driving wheel (574), to proceed asfollows:

mediary day wheel (609) but ispositioned on the other side, asshown in figure 7.

2. Keep slight pressure on the day dialdisk (591) and with the aid of apointed tool, through the hole, pullthe day jumper (586) backwards(against the stem) in order to set itbetween two teeth of the day star.

NOTE: Should the calendar jump twodays instead of one, check and ifnecessary increase the tension of thedate jumper spring (578).

Checking the movement in thecase1. After fitting the movement into the

case, make certain the oscillatingweight functions normally with nocontact against the back of the case.

2. By turning the winding crown, makesure that the day and date indicatorsjump correctly at approximately12 o'clock (midnight).

Setting the day and date1. Set the day by turning the hands

clockwise or counter-clockwise untilthe right day appears in the dialaperture.

2. Set the date by moving the handsback and forth between 12 o'clock(midnight) and 8 o'clock until thedesired date is reached.(Each time, the day will turn backand return again to the correct day).

NOTE: To advance the date withoutchanging the day after months havingless than 31 days, turn the hands back-wards to 8 o'clock (20.00 hours) andthen advance them again until the pro-per date of the following month appears.

3. Set the time by turning the handsforward to correct time.

NOTE: If the time of day is afternoon(p. m.) continue to turn hands past12 o'clock noon before stopping at thecorrect time. This action assures properday and date advance in relation totime-of-day hands.
