THE SCARBORO GARDEN SCENE Colour in the garden

Taste in fashion combines our experience (and genetics / instincts, probably) with historical trends to determine what is attractive. In designing gardens, factors to be considered include the growing and dormant season colour, and the demands of Calgary’s growing conditions.

We can choose colours that contrast greatly with one another, or colours that are similar - or we can contrast plant colour with adjacent house, fence, hedge or path colour, and the surrounding relaxing green of foliage. We see different colours at different times of the day: we can brighten up dark corners with bright colours - it’s our choice!

The concept of colour wheels has been around for centuries, and scientists, for instance Isaac Newton in 1706, and artists use them in communication. Garden designers when discussing colour wheels often refer to opposing, aka complementary, colours, and analogous aka adjacent colours.

Using the former colour combinations can create a dramatic scene, and the latter, more harmonious. For example various shades of red (a “hot” colour or hue) and orange would be harmonious, whereas a red plant next to a green plant could demand one’s attention. Foliage, berries, stems, lawn grass, paths etc., contribute to the “painting” of the garden, Texture too alters our appreciation of colour.

From the artistic point of view (aopposed to the scientific perspective), white and black are colours and their contribution impacts the amount of light reflected: gardening.cornell.edu/homegardening/scenebde7.html  this is an excellent website for more information.

Incidentally, bees can differentiate most of the colours as we see, but while humans see the red to violet spectrum of visible light, bees react to different, higher frequencies, seeing orange-yellow to even  ultraviolet – in other word, red attracts bees, but they would not recognize it as “red” … perhaps it would look black to them?

    GREEN CARTS CONT’D

You’ll receive everything you need to get started

The carts will be delivered to the front of your home. When your green cart arrives look inside to find:

    • Kitchen pail and samples of compostable bags to collect food scrap

    • Samples of paper yard waste bags to use when your cart is full

    • Instruction guide that explains the new service • The collection schedule which includes the new green,

blue and black cart collection days.

You’ll be amazed at how much can go in

All food and yard waste can go in the green cart. You can even put in things that you can’t compost at home like meat, bones, cheese, bread, pasta, branches and pet waste too.

These materials can be safely composted because the material reaches and maintains a temperature of at least 55 degrees Celsius during the composting process, which kills any harmful bacteria. For more details visit: http://bit.ly/1YpanvE

NOTES FROM SUNALTA SCHOOL! It has been an exciting spring at Sunalta.  Students have been engaged in “Cirque Sunalta” where they have been learning the circus arts. They have learned how to juggle, balance objects, balance their bodies and twirl plates.  Little do they know that all this “fun” is really requiring them to be persistent, cooperate with each other, take risks in their learning, strengthen their core, concentrate and perform for an audience.

Students will be learning more about the natural world as the “Seed Survivor” van will be visiting our school in early May.  All our students from preschool to grade six will be planting sunflowers and be learning about how the nutrients in the soil impact plant growth, biodiversity, and sparks student interest in the natural world.  Robotics is in full gear at Sunalta.  Students are learning how to solve real world problems with our robots, programming, mathematics and problem solving is all part of the “fun”.

Our annual “Orff the Wall Concert” was a great hit at the Jack Singer Concert Hall this month. “We are Silent” wrapped up the month, as well, as we raised money for our foster school in Kenya.  Students experienced what it is like not to have a voice and learned more about child labour, poverty and not having a choice in your own future.

Thank you to many of our community members who supported our annual “Think-a-thon”, the funds from the Think-a-thon will go to supporting more amazing learning opportunities for our students at Sunalta.
