THE ASCENSION The Solemnity of the Ascension commemorates Jesus’ return to heaven forty days after His Resurrection. Thus, it falls 40 days after Easter, on the 6th Thursday of Easter, on 10 May in 2018. In some parts of the world, as was the case in this country, the feast is transferred to the Sunday after the traditional date. However, the Feast Day has been transferred back to the Thursday in England and Wales. Evidence from John Chrysostom, Egeria, Gregory of Nyssa, and Church historian Socrates, suggest that Ascension Day probably originated in the 4th century AD. However, Augustine says the festival is apostolic. Often the feast was celebrated with a procession, symbolizing Christ's journey to the Mount of Olives. Until rather recently, the Paschal Candle (lighted at the Easter Vigil) was extinguished on Ascension Day. It is often celebrated as an Octave, the proper preface and Ascension collect being used until the Saturday before Pentecost. The Ascension is an important Christian holiday that attests to the reality of Jesus Christ, God and man, returning to the Father, to return again in the future Second Coming. It is the final component of the Paschal Mystery, which consists also of Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection. Along with the Resurrection, the Ascension proves Jesus’ claim that he was the Messiah. The Ascension is also the event whereby humanity was taken into heaven, and the “final blow” against Satan's power, and thus the lion (Jesus) conquering the dragon (Satan) is a symbol of the Ascension. Early Christian iconography portrayed the Ascension frequently, showing its importance to the early Church. Indeed, the image remained little changed over the centuries. The Catholic Catechism gives three important theological aspects of the Ascension: It marks the definitive entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this humanity in the meantime hides him from the eyes of men (cf. Col 3:3). Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him for ever. Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit (665-667). Today Jesus returns to the Father, but He promise that He will not leave us orphans, but will send another advocate to be with us forever: the Spirit of Truth. THE ASCENSION

The Solemnity of the Ascension commemorates Jesus’ return to heaven forty

days after His Resurrection. Thus, it falls 40 days after Easter, on the 6th

Thursday of Easter, on 10 May in 2018. In some parts of the world, as was the

case in this country, the feast is transferred to the Sunday after the traditional date.

However, the Feast Day has been transferred back to the Thursday in England and

Wales.

Evidence from John Chrysostom, Egeria, Gregory of Nyssa, and Church historian

Socrates, suggest that Ascension Day probably originated in the 4th century AD.

However, Augustine says the festival is apostolic. Often the feast was celebrated

with a procession, symbolizing Christ's journey to the Mount of Olives. Until

rather recently, the Paschal Candle (lighted at the Easter Vigil) was extinguished

on Ascension Day. It is often celebrated as an Octave, the proper preface and

Ascension collect being used until the Saturday before Pentecost.

The Ascension is an important Christian holiday that attests to the reality of Jesus

Christ, God and man, returning to the Father, to return again in the future Second

Coming. It is the final component of the Paschal Mystery, which consists also of

Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Along with the Resurrection, the Ascension proves Jesus’ claim that he

was the Messiah. The Ascension is also the event whereby humanity

was taken into heaven, and the “final blow” against Satan's power,

and thus the lion (Jesus) conquering the dragon (Satan) is a symbol

of the Ascension. Early Christian iconography portrayed the

Ascension frequently, showing its importance to the early Church.

Indeed, the image remained little changed over the centuries.

The Catholic Catechism gives three important theological aspects of the

Ascension:

It marks the definitive entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's

heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this

humanity in the meantime hides him from the eyes of men (cf. Col 3:3).

Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's

glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the

hope of one day being with him for ever.

Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all,

intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the

permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit (665-667).

Today Jesus returns to the Father, but He promise that He will not leave us orphans, but will send another advocate to be with us forever: the Spirit of Truth.

SUNDAY SMILE: An Irish Priest was transferred to Texas. He rose from his bed one fine spring day in his new west Texas mission parish. He walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of the beautiful day and noticed there was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his front lawn. He promptly called the local police station. The conversation went like this: "Good morning. This is Sergeant Jones. How might I help you?" "And the best of the day to yourself. This is Father O'Malley at St Ann's Catholic Church. There's a jackass lying dead in me front lawn and would ye be so kind as to send a couple o' yer lads to take care of the matter." Sergeant Jones, considering himself to be quite a wit and recognizing the accent, thought he would have a little fun with the good Father, replied, "Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people took care of the last rites! "There was dead silence on the line for a long moment. Then, Father O'Malley replied, "Aye, 'tis certainly true; but we are also obliged to notify the next of kin first, which is the reason for me call."

ASCENSION ICON (see images on front cover) In the Scriptures, Jesus is described simply as being “taken up” into the skies

and disappearing from sight behind a cloud. However, the icon shows Christ in glory: surrounded by a circle or a mandorla (Italian for Almond) of light, flanked by angels, and arrayed in brilliant golden robes. There is a striking similarity between this image and the appearance of Christ at His Second Coming (as given in the Book of Revelation (Rev 4:2-3). The reason comes from the words of the angels present at the Ascension: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11) The Icon depicts Jesus’ Ascension “in like manner” with His Second Coming. Not that the confused disciples below fully understand these words yet.

The icon contains both confusion and peace: confusion is borne of worldly reasoning, whilst peace comes from the divine, heavenly, order. This distinction is most clear upon the Mount of Olives: The Apostles look up in fear and wonder, arms waving about in symphony with the olive trees behind them. In the centre, the two angels “in white apparel” exhort the men to cease their gazing into heaven and return to Jerusalem to receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.

Between the two angels stands Mary, Mother of God, hands raised in peaceful prayer, not staring up, but gazing peacefully toward us. Mary appears to understand the deep mysteries of her Son’s birth, death, resurrection and ascension, already hoping on Christ’s return. This hope brings her the divine peace shared by Jesus Christ and the angels: they all have halos signifying the grace and glory of God, whereas the disordered Apostles do not. Mary’s gaze towards us invites us to share in her understanding, her hope, and her peace.

As well as showing the historical event of Christ’s ascension, the icon also

symbolically depicts the Church, as can be evidenced by the presence of the Apostle Paul, despite the Ascension occurring before Paul’s conversion (as told later in the Book of Acts). This ahistoric depiction is present, too, in the icon of Pentecost (see Pentecost Sunday newsletter), which also shows Paul, as it too is an icon of the Church.
