How could Advanced Learning Loans help you?

If you are 19 or over and want to study a Level 3 to 6 course, you maybe eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan. These loans are straight forward and will cover the cost of your course (fee C).

These loans are similar to university tuition loans, introduced by the government to support students who want to further their education or even go on to university. Loan eligibility doesnt depend on your income and there are no credit checks.

Students will therefore have the option to either: Pay all of the course fees themselves

Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees for them

Apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to help pay for the course tuition fees

To qualify you will need to be: Aged 19 and above at the start of the course

Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 to 6 (Level 3 or 4 only if your course begins before 1 August 2016) which includes A-levels, Access to HE Diplomas and other Vocational Qualifications.

A resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course

    Studying with college in England

Applying is easyApply online or download an application form atgov.uk/advancedlearnerloan.

You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover your fee or you can pay all or part of the fee yourself. The loan is available irrespective of your current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit check. Once you have applied for the loan you dont need to do anything to pay the course fee the loan will be paid directly to the college on your behalf.

Repaying the loanRepayments are straight forward - your monthly repayments will be based on your income, not what you borrowed. Youll be due to start repaying your loan in the April after you leave or finish your course whichever comes first. You will pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn-ing more than 21,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below 21,000 a year. You pay interest until you pay your loan back in full. Your monthly repayment amount will be 9% of any income you earn over 21,000.

    For example:If you earn 22,000 a year - you will pay 7 a monthIf you earn 25,000 a year - you will pay 30 a month

Making repaymentsIf youre an employee, your employer will work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax.If youre self employed, you make repayments as part of your self assessment tax return.

You can pay some or all of your loan at any time without an extra charge.

Leaving or changing your course? You will have to pay back any money (plus interest) that has been paid to your college or training provider if you leave or change your course after two weeks.

You will need to speak to one of our Student Advisers to see if they can transfer the loan to another course.

How many loans can I get?You can have up to a maximum of four Advanced Learner Loans in total:

If you started your course before 1 August 2016, you can only take out one loan at a time for non A-Level courses and you cant get a second loan for a course of the same type and level as the one youve already completed.

If you start your course on or after 1 August 2016, you can apply for up to four loans at the same time for courses of any eligible type and level. You should speak to your col-lege or provider to check that the combinations you would like to study will benefit you and lead to progression.

For A-Levels you can apply for a loan to fund each course you take towards your A-Levels - up to a maximum of 4 A-Levels. This means you can have up to 8 loans at once if youre taking each A-Level as 2 separate courses. The courses must be in the same subject to qualify for a full A-Level.

What courses will it cover? The minimum loan amount is 300. Therefore any level 3 to 6 course that is over 300 could be eligible for a Advanced Learner Loan. Please note that these loans do not cover Degrees or other forms of Higher Education (HE). For information on funding for HE go to gov.uk/student-finance.

How could Advanced Learning Loans help you?Applying for the Advanced Learner Loan was easy and I have had help with my childcare too. It has given me more than any financial gain, it has given me my life back whilst enabling me to still be a great mum to my girls.Grace Isted, Beauty Therapy student

Access to HE CoursesIf youre undertaking an Access to HE Diploma and then go on to complete an HE qualification, the outstanding

balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off.

You can only get one Advanced Learner Loan to fund an Access to HE course. To qualify for this write off you must fully complete both your Access to Higher Education and Higher Education course at university.

The HE course doesnt need to relate to the Access to HE course you complete. The HE course must be eligible for funding by Student Finance England.

More information?Talk to one of our student advisors on 01424 458475 or read more at www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.

Work placements and visitsThis year, the college has 1,700 16-18 year old students who are seeking work placements as part of their Employability and Work Skills programmes. Placements give young people a real taste of work and improve employability.

Businesses can offer students the opportunity to visit their premises, come into college to talk about their business, and the sector they work in. This will inspire our learners and give them an enriched understanding of the skills that businesses are looking for. Please contact the Work Experience team on 01424 458580 or at [email protected]

ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships are one of the fastest-growing ways of increasing capabilities in the workplace. Heavily supported by central government, they are an affordable way to gain an employee and support young people as they take their first steps into work. If you think your business would benefit from taking on an apprentice, contact the Apprenticeship Team on 01424 458317 or at [email protected].

Our skills strategy and local businesses

We are committed to working with businesses and getting people into the workplace, into careers that they enjoy. We are developing a skills strategy to fulfil the Hastings and Rother local skills demand, by offering informative first class education from non-accredited learning through to Higher Education and employment. We would like to work with businesses, targeting four key areas, that will generate value for both business and employee:

Contact Dan Shelley (left), Vice Principal for Enterprise, Employment and Skills, to discuss the development of our Skills Strategy: [email protected].

Training your existing staffThe college works with businesses to provide immediate, bespoke and flexible training to optimise productivity. We can provide a tailored set of accredited qualifications, along with coaching and specific workshops, to enhance the performance of your companys workforce.

For example, we have recently worked with over 15 local engineering and manufacturing companies to develop a short vacuum course that has enabled all of their employees to expand their theoretical knowledge and improve sales as a result. We have government funding available to help your business develop and grow so please contact us to discuss your bespoke requirements on 01424 458570 or email us at [email protected].

Training your future workforceIf your business is looking to recruit, then we have a vast pool of work-ready people for you to tap in to. Working in partnership with employers and the Job Centre Plus, we design short and intensive, accredited pathways for local unemployed people, giving them the confidence and skills they need to fill local job vacancies. Our Inside Track programme trains local people for you to interview, trial or directly employ. We can provide you with a cost-effective recruitment process and support unemployed people get back into work. Successful partnerships have generated jobs for people at Prime Care, Pets at Home and Dunelm Mill.

For a tailored programme, specific to your needs, contact our Business Development team on 01424 458570 or [email protected]

I want the college to be seen by businesses as a vital part of the formula for growth. I am extending an open invitation to employers to help us direct our resources to meet their specific training needs. In some cases, we will even be able to work with business partners to develop new accredited qualifications.

If partners, community groups or local people would like more information on Sussex Coast College Hastings approach to Community Learning, please contact David Pine on 01424 458346 or [email protected]

Community Learning brings together groups of adults, often of different ages and backgrounds, by helping them to pursue their interests. We aim to help local people develop new skills, address a need, become healthier or learn how better to support their children. We work closely with our partners, Claverham Community College and Education Futures Trust, in meeting the needs of the community.

The key areas of focus for our Community Learning provision are:

To maximise access to Community Learning for all adults, bringing new opportunities and improving lives.

To promote social renewal by bringing local communities together to experience the joy of learning and the pride that comes with achievement.

To help maximise the effect Community Learning has on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families and communities.

    Meet our students

Be inspired by our students stories from past and present, and how their courses helped them.

Doing this course has completely changed my life. If I ever had any issues, the college couldnt do enough to resolve them. I took out a 24+ loan to study and it was paid straight to the college with no hassle. I was able to get help with my childcare too. The course has given me more than any financial gain, it has given me my life back whilst enabling me to continue to be a great mum to my girls.

Grace has a 5-year plan, hoping to continue her Level 3, specialising in skin care, then gain experience for a year before going freelance and opening her own salon.

Grace Isted, Level 3 Beauty student

Sussex Coast College Hastings is a modern building with an abundance of resources for students to learn. As an outsider I had a very limited knowledge of the facilities available, but as a student I have had a great opportunity to access everything the college has to of-fer, which supported my intellectual and social ability. The college is very near the town; a group trip to the Old Town with my teachers explored historical places of interest, which I was unaware of.

Mahdy Al Gaaly is a mature Egyptian-born British student, studying ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

    Mahdy Al Gaaly, ESOL student

I chose to study at Sussex Coast College as the engineering department had an excellent reputation and the course suited my needs. SCCH is a very hands on college, especially at the Ore campus, where you are given the opportunity to use industrial equipment and machinery without being restricted due to it being an educational establishment. It really gives you the experience of real welding, due to the workshop environment, and totally prepares you for the world of work.

I enjoy studying here because there are industrial standard facilities and the staff are knowledgeable. The course fits around work perfectly as it is in the evenings.

    Rod Nelson, part-time Welding student

I worked as a part-time welder when I came back to college to gain qualifications in machine shop skills. I was inspired to progress on to the BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Engineering. I discovered a true passion for engineering and found the confidence I needed to be myself, instead of being what others expected. I am very happy to be unconventional!I went on to study the HND in Mechanical Engineering and won a regional award for Outstanding Progression to Higher Education. I am now teaching Engineering at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

Debbie Attewell, Level 4 Engineering student

Once I was enrolled I was even more nervous, sitting in a room full of intelligent youngsters who were used to being in education. Then there is me, who has been out of it for a long time. I soon proved to myself that I was capable of taking information in and putting assignments together. When I received my first Distinction, I cried with happiness and through it I gained confidence, which is something Ive always lacked. I have learnt so much whilst on this course and had some brilliant experiences, both in and outside the classroom. This includes a range of placements which have helped steer my career decisions in the right direction.

Stella Cowell, Level 3 Health and Social Care student

I studied TAQA and PGCE Cert Ed part-time in order to gain my teaching qualifications. Part-time studying meant I could continue to work, whilst learning at the same time. I found the course at SCCH to be of a very high standard, with tutors who understood my needs. I am now a fully qualified teacher, employed by the college. Thanks to my part-time course, I am able to give my students a high standard of learning. Studying part-time has given me confidence in my abilities and made me curious as to what I will learn next

    Rob Donachie, PGCE student

It is hard to know what you want to do with your life when you are 16 years old; I just decided to go with the flow. I always wanted to be a hairdresser, but I was persuaded not to by my family. Now I have finally decided to follow my dream career. Studying at SCCH was an easy decision. The location is perfect for me and I love the facilities. It is also a Wella College of Excellence which made it a clear choice for me.I was extremely worried that I would be the only adult on the course, but I couldnt be more wrong. At least half of the class are adults, allowing us to learn from each other. We all get on really well and there is a great atmosphere.

Emma Heritage, Level 3 Hairdressing student

I have learnt so much on my course, starting with the roles of working overseas, cruises, business travel, geography, and attractions around the world. I also learnt key skills in marketing, global distribution services, selling skills, customer service skills, and teamwork. In fact, as Im writing this I can hardly believe how much I have actually achieved! I have been to Gatwick airport both landside and airside and experienced the World Travel Market, which is the most prestigious travel event of the year, all thanks to SCCH. This year I have to plan my own travel event and undertake some very difficult exams but I know I will achieve my goals. In fact, what used to scare me now excites me.
