She engaged in what she describes as simple things, including listening to every kind of music she truly enjoys. The title signifies not only the artist’s fourth solo offering and the day of her birth but it is also a personal gift to her fans who took to their social media pages urging her to name the album for her special number.

Bang & Olufsen of Bexleyheath, Bromley & Tunbridge Wells hedged its bets on a customer casino night and the gamble

certainly paid off for Kent’s CHYPS children’s charity – the evening raising over £1,500 for the cause.

Looking for a fun way to introduce the latest Bang & Olufsen products and help a local charity at the same time, the retailers recently hosted an innovative casino night at the Thistle Hotel, Brands Hatch. Over 160 visitors chanced their luck on the tables with ‘play’ money, enjoyed entertainment from a magician, a delicious buffet and the chance to win a host of prizes in the Bang & Olufsen charity raffle.

First prize in the raffle was a BeoSound 8, the opportunity to win the

acclaimed iPod speaker dock seeing over £1,000 raised for CHYPS, which enables children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions to receive full hospice care in their own homes. As well as supplying the raffle prizes, the Bang & Olufsen stores made a cash donation to take the total raised to over £1,500.

Further excitement was provided with the UK unveiling of the BeoVision 7-55 3D, Bang & Olufsen’s first ever television to use the manufacturer’s highly advanced 3D technology. Such was its impact on guests that a number of customers immediately placed orders for the impressive set.

“The night was a fantastic success and the roulette tables were very popular, especially as visitors were gambling

with play money and could throw caution to the wind with their bets,” explained Paul Blake, Dealer Principal of Bang & Olufsen of Bexleyheath, Bromley & Tunbridge Wells.

“In fact, the lady who made the most won her first ever Bang & Olufsen product – a BeoTime alarm clock – and a bottle of champagne through placing all her chips on the number 13, so it certainly proved lucky for her!”

Paul continued: “Feedback to the night has been very positive and I would like to thank our customers and their friends for getting into the spirit of the event and their support of CHYPS, which helped to significantly exceed the target that we hoped to raise for the charity.”

ROWLED

HARRY. POTTER. TWO AVERAGE, COMMON AND PLAIN WORDS THAT WHEN PUT TOGETHER MEAN SOMETHING TO MOST ADULTS, CHILDREN, GRANDPARENTS – PRETTY MUCH ANYONE IN THE WORLD WHO HASN’T BEEN LOCKED IN A CUPBOARD UNDER THE STAIRS FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS ANYWAY.

Words byFrankie Cooper

Page 25: SCENE (Kent) August

SCENE 25

Harry Potter means magic, wands and spells; an unimaginable adventure in a world we can only dream of. But one lady did dream of it. J K Rowling thought up the most imaginative, extravagant creation – and all while waiting for a delayed train from Manchester to Kings Cross in 1990.

Harry Potter has transformed children’s literature and the world of movies and, to an extent, created a culture. It’s amazing how one woman, born and raised in Gwent, Wales, can do all that with just a pen and a bit of paper.

Born in July 1965 Rowling studied French and Classics at Exeter University, including one year in Paris, before moving to London as a postgraduate and working as a researcher at Amnesty International.

Although a talented and now award-winning author – she has so many, including an OBE, we simply cannot list them all – the Harry Potter series was not magically created overnight. Rowling spent five years outlining the plots for each book and in that time moved to Portugal to teach English, got married and gave birth to a daughter Jessica in 1993.

It wasn’t until the determined writer returned to the UK to live in Edinburgh with her sister Di that she finally completed book one: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Researchers, fellow writers, academics will sit for hours deciphering the “code” in each of the books wondering why the author chose this word here and that symbol there. She

has never really set out to explain the books but one thing she has said is that when her mother, a sufferer of Multiple Sclerosis, died, her life and Harry’s life changed forever.

Every writer’s dream is, after sending off those first few chapters of your special book, you will eventually get a letter through the post from an agent wanting to see more. It was some time after Rowling sent off the first Harry Potter book that she finally got a deal with Bloomsbury.

Page 26: SCENE (Kent) August

26 SCENE

Philosopher’s Stone was published in June 1997 and then one more book was published each year until the first four titles had hit the shelves.

By 1999, a media frenzy had begun and the series attracted worldwide press attention after the books shot to number one in the adult book charts.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire had a first print-run of one million copies – a record-breaking figure that set the mark for it to smash all the records for the greatest number of books sold in the first weekend of publication.

One year later and Potter mania, and Rowling, were hitting the headlines regularly as a little boy called Daniel Radcliffe appeared on the big screen.

It steam-rolled from there with books and movies being released every year until we had the culmination of the epic tale when the final book was released in July 2007 and now just last month, the last movie.

Amongst all the Harry Potter hype, Rowling, managed to squeeze in marrying Dr Neil Murray in 2001 and then giving birth to a son, David, in 2003 and another daughter, Mackenzie, in 2005.

It goes without saying that the spectacled scruffy boy who lived in a cupboard changed Rowling’s life. It made the careers of many actors – Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe to name but a few – and transformed the lives of many children who read the enchanted stories.

There have been red carpet appearances after red carpet appearances with film after film being released following the life of “the boy who survived” and the tale of “he who must not be named”.

People thought it was a children’s book but there was a time when you would step onto a tube in London’s Underground and see every traveller reading a copy of one of the books.

The story is an escape, a magical world where nothing is explained and yet everything happens for a reason. A world in which children can become immersed and adults can become lost in the fantasy of the unimaginable.

Not only did Rowling’s talent storm the UK but it took over America with her books taking the top spot in the charts and the films breaking box office records.

Last month it all ended as the beautiful Rowling took to the red carpet in a soggy Leicester Square (and many other squares around the world) to say a final farewell and thank you to all Harry’s fans. Three grown adults who have grown up in the spotlight followed in her wake and millions of people bought their popcorn to watch the last chapter of the eight-part epic tale.

But what happens now? It is without a doubt that mother-of-three Rowling has left a legacy and seven books which will never be left dusty on children’s shelves. But what about all the starved fans who were craving to know more? In the final words of JK’s series: “All was well.” And the fans would just have to be content with that.

IT’S A ROCKY TIME FOR A LOT OF COMPANIESSO DON’T GAMBLE WITH YOUR MONEY

“WHEN CUSTOMERS COME TO US THEY KNOW THEIR MONEY IS SAFE”

The economic climate has been tough on the high street and we’ve recently seen a clutch of familiar brands go to the wall.

But while the big retail giants struggle, one of our key local businesses are flourishing. Woodford based Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs has seen an increase in trade over the past two years and survived the recession unscathed. Managing Director, Michael

Copp, believes his company’s success is down to a winning combination of good service, quality products and a flexible and honest approach to sales.

“It’s been a busy couple of years. We have a good reputation so people come to us because of word of mouth or because of a recommendation from a previous customer.”

Page 43: SCENE (Kent) August

SCENE 43

But when it comes to winning over these new customers, Michael thinks his company’s approach to sales sets them apart from his rivals.

“Many companies want to sell at any cost – they don’t listen to the customer; they just want to push products and meet targets. They quote some absurd price and then quickly discount it to create the illusion that they’re giving the customer a good deal. We just don’t play that game. We’re not a target driven company and we don’t have a hard sales approach.”

Some companies have slashed prices to get customers through the door but Michael is quick to point out that getting value for money doesn’t always mean going with the cheapest deal.

Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs stocks a range of furniture at different prices but every purchase buys something many other companies can’t provide: experience and a reliable service.

Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs is approved by Trust Mark, a government backed initiative which helps consumers find reliable and trustworthy companies. Every firm’s

technical skills are independently checked through on–site inspections.

“Value for money isn’t just about the physical product; it’s about the whole service. When a customer hands over their money they have to trust that the company will deliver. We pride ourselves on a 360 degree service – from quotation, to sale, to fitting to aftercare our only goal is to keep the customer happy. A business lives and dies by the service they provide.”

Not every company in the same market has seen the same success as Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs. Sharps and Moben recently went into administration and some customers may have lost their deposits. Michael cautions customers to consider where they spend their money: “It’s important to think about who you’re buying from. You don’t want to leave yourself exposed when you pay a deposit for a kitchen or a bedroom. What guarantees can they offer? It’s a rocky time for a lot of companies so don’t gamble with your money.”

Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs is a member of the Consumer Protection Association, which fully vets each company for professional competence and integrity and guarantees the

return of a customer’s deposit if the company ceases trading.

“When customers come to us they know their money is safe. As the old saying goes – ‘Let the Buyer Beware’.”

With everything going so well, what plans does Michael have for the future of Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs? He’s keeping tight–lipped: “It’s an interesting time and I’m assessing my options. I wouldn’t rule out expansion but the time has to be right.”

And with everything going so well for Michael, expect to see new branches of Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs opening up sometime soon.

NATURAL BEAUTY.

The Gatehouse East is situated in an attractive rural position within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just 2.5 miles from Wrotham, a typical Kentish village with its many period houses, inns, shops and views over the surrounding countryside.

The Gatehouse East is a stunning converted property set within a secure courtyard. It offers a spacious and well presented style of living. The house is principally single storey but with a first floor bedroom and study.

The gorgeously green courtyard gardens are perfectly manicured and edged with planted beds and borders. There are two paved terraces offering ideal spaces for outdoor entertaining and perfect spots to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery.

On entrance the tiled reception hall leads on to the family shower room and then into the spacious sitting room. This features a brick built inglenook fireplace with open fire and exposed wooden beams bringing

a stylishly rustic feel to the space. The room also offers views over the courtyard gardens.

The large dining room has double doors leading out to the terrace, making it ideal for post dinner party entertaining.

For those that love cooking and eating there is a spacious kitchen and breakfast room with tiled flooring, integrated appliances and ample base units with granite work surfaces. The centrally set island unit provides seating for informal family dining and gossips over a cup of coffee.

The master bedroom is fitted with chic Hammonds wardrobes providing plenty of space to veil a bountiful collection of clothes. Attached is a fully tiled en suite shower room with a double shower cubicle and drench head for an invigorating and

energizing shower experience. There are three further bedrooms all with fitted wardrobes, one with a well appointed shower room and a further walk in wardrobe. A Jacuzzi tub is featured in the family bathroom to spice up bath time and add a sense of luxury and relaxation.

On the first floor is a study leading to a second floor bedroom with storage. This would make ideal living accommodation for a Nanny. The external bar and games room really makes this property interesting. The fully fitted mirrored bar with granite work surfaces has a built-in glass washer and there is an incredible ‘star light’ ceiling over the dance floor to create a real club like atmosphere. Air conditioning is conveniently in place to avoid party animals getting overheated.

The Gatehouse East is approached over a shared gravel driveway leading to electrically operated double gates with an entry phone system. The gravel driveway leads to a parking

area and the double garage with electrically operated up and over doors and a gardeners W.C.

There are many schools in the surrounding area including, Primary, Secondary and Private. For golf enthusiasts there is The London Golf Club and Woodlands Manor Golf Course. The property is only 32 minutes from Central London and there is direct access to the A20.

THIS MONTH’S PICK OF OUR FAVOURITE THREE OF KENT’S FINEST EATERIES TO VISIT AND DINE IN THIS AUGUST

The splendour of an old Bromley pub is the setting for the surprisingly modern and spacious Cinnamon Culture restaurant, the perfect setting in which to sample contemporary Indian cookery. Here you’ll taste tantalising homemade chutneys, delve in to stunning starters and enjoy the kitchen’s breathtakingly creative plated main dishes, created with one eye on the traditional and another very much on current and up and coming trends. Unusually for an Indian restaurant, Cinnamon Culture places much of its focus on its dessert

menu, allowing for further inventiveness in twisting together Eastern and Western ideas. Cinnamon Culture’s décor makes the most of high ceilings and skylights with modern flock wallpaper, fishhook chandeliers and tasteful photography of Raj artefacts. A chrome and cream bar with its high stools and array of fabulous cocktails extends your evening beyond simply dining while the large garden is the setting for summer barbeques with an Indian flavour.46 Plaistow Lane, Bromley BR1 3PA Tel:

Behind the charming Tudor exterior is a bright, modern restaurant with top notch modern European cuisine. Chapter One has gained enthusiastic reviews from many major restaurant critics and happy plaudits from satisfied diners. Not to mention that it won AA restaurant of the year 2004 and comes along with four AA rosettes. The dining room is relaxed, spacious and comfortable, and the cooking

superb. Start with something inventive, like homemade roast gnocchi with braised chestnut, pumpkin and lobster. Then do try the braised oxtail with pancetta bacon and parsnip puree - everyone raves about it. The wine list shows much care and attention too. The Bakery is like a good friend you feel happy and comfortable to be around, whom you can shoot the

breeze with and not be distracted. This comfortable, brasserie-style restaurant has been owned by the enigmatic Andrew Bond for over 12 years and has done a thriving business since. No surprise then that the local customer reviews are abundant with words like superb and sumptuous complimenting all areas of the restaurant.

The menu designed by the Bakery’s chef, John Boreham, delivers a concise array of entrees and dinners to suit all palettes with a nod to modern British and European fare.

The Bakery are proud to source their produce locally where possible. Everything is cooked from scratch including the calorie-proud puds to the luscious-tasting ice creams. The latter can even be made to order and taken away! Ideal for a summer soiree but maybe too good for the children’s party, hey?!

The awesome meals range from

Sea Bass in Pesto and Garlic Sauce to Pork Fillet with Prunes and Blue Cheese. Guaranteed, your dinner will be exciting and splendid without being pretentious and you wont leave hungry. Our delectable dinner was made up of an entree of Avocado and Fresh Water Prawns, doused in a spicy sauce and Scallop in a melt-in-the-mouth garlic infused butter.

The sirloin steaks were Tudor-like in proportion and cooked to perfect spec, smothered in mushrooms and flavoursome seasoning. A truly delicious and satisfying meal, enjoyed with a gorgeous Sauvignon Blanc from the Astrolabe Marlborough region of New Zealand. You can expect to pay between £24.95 for a two-course meal and £29.95 for three courses.

Offering an enviable wine list comprising delicious wines from all over the world, ranging in depth and flavour to compliment your food, there is something for everyone here, including cold draught beer if you are stopping through.

The restaurant can furnish functions for 90 seated, and can earnestly house

140 guests for a finger or fork buffet. The prices start from as little as £10; outstanding value for money for such a quality feed. The restaurant is also licensed to entertain, so perfect for the Kent wedding, christening or special birthday. Friends will be wowed by the taste factor and superb fineness of the food as well as the Bakery’s manicured and pretty surroundings.

The specialtiy champagne list will not disappoint either as will not the after-dinner libation. Expect to be able to purchase the very best from that neat little bar at front of house, including a slug of Hennessy if you are looking for the good stuff or a bottle of Grand Cuvee to celebrate in mode . This warm-hearted modern taverna offers subtle ambiance and comfortable pockets of seating, so, whether you fancy a drink at the bar, a light bite at the front or a hearty dinner out back, the Bakery will appeal to couples and groups alike. Bon appetit!

BENTLEY HAS FACELIFTED THE CONTINENTAL GT

For Crewe’s design and engineering teams, the new Continental GT coupe is an opportunity to set a bold and exciting direction for one of Bentley’s most revered names – the Continental. The seminal and highly successful Continental GT, introduced in 2003, represented the first step in Bentley’s renaissance and defined a whole new market segment. It was a luxury GT offering excellent usability that remained true to the Bentley grand touring spirit.

Now the new Continental GT 4-seat coupe builds on the success of its iconic predecessor, capturing that GT spirit but with even higher standards of design, engineering, luxury, craftsmanship, dynamic performance, everyday practicality and refinement.

A beautifully sculptured new body gives the GT coupe an even crisper, more defined appearance. The contemporary interior offers new levels of cabin design, comfort and hand-crafted luxury. The seats, for example, provide even greater support and rear leg-room; a sweeping dashboard even more style and modernity. The new touchscreen infotainment system features state-of-the-art navigation, Google Maps and entertainment, while the latest

Balanced Mode Radiator speaker technology and Dirac Dimensions™ digital sound processing deliver enhanced audio quality.

Bentley’s acclaimed 6-litre, 12-cylinder, twin-turbocharged powertrain now has a raised power output of 575PS (567bhp/423kW) and 700Nm (516lb ft) of torque and this is mated to a new Quickshift transmission which enables double downshifts. Thanks to advanced FlexFuel technology, it can also run on both standard unleaded petrol (gasoline) and sustainable bioethanol (up to E85) or any mix of the two.

In late 2011 an all-new, high-output 8-cylinder engine will also be available to order. This advanced power unit will deliver a 40 percent reduction in emissions compared with the W12 engine and will offer a class-leading CO2 emissions-to-power ratio with Bentley levels of performance and refinement.

Both engines are coupled to an all-wheel drive system with a sporty 40:60 rear-torque bias (compared with the 50:50 bias of the original Continental GT), minimising understeer during hard cornering and allowing the experienced driver to control the car’s line and balance via precise throttle control.

“The new Continental GT is an automotive work of art, with superb craftsmanship and elegant, contemporary design. It drives like a supercar, but without the usual sacrifices in ride or practicality. It is a car that you can enjoy every moment of every day.”

Aries 21 Mar-19 Apr Make peace with yourself. You drive too hard a bargain and it will trip you up shortly, that is for sure. You must learn that diplomacy in all things is where lasting achievements lie and then you are able to build from difficult situations to lasting productive ones. It is in your interest. Ignore this advice and pay the penalty over and over again.

Sagittarius 22 Nov-21 Dec Just feel the power of justice heading your way. An extraordinary chain of events will see you surpass yourself, not only in your professional life but equally in your personal. It has not come too late. It has come just in time and it will allow for full retribution to be administered. Be happy. This really is your time now! See you benefit from every angle.

Capricorn 22 Dec-19 Jan Everything now turns for you full circle and all those uncertainties of yesteryear are banished for good. Your professional life is souring and it is high time you were noticed and came into your own. You have always been there, but the notice is fully upon you. It is both exciting and rewarding at the same time – a life to be lived and enjoyed to the fullest.

Aquarius 20 Jan-18 FebPeace is finally upon you. You needed to know that as the turmoil although hazardous has indeed proved positive to you. Financially you thought you were not going to make it, but as always the safety net was provided and it made a substantial difference to your life. So breathe the sweet air of freedom from the past and enjoy now what is so rightfully yours.

Pisces 19 Feb-20 MarIt really can’t get any better than this or so you think. What you once thought was, “Is this all there is?” It’s not what this is all about. You have completely come into your own and have blossomed to a fashion not thought possible a year ago. You go from strength to strength gathering momentum along the way. You really are unstoppable, all credit to you.

Taurus 20 Apr-20 May The time has come to take that giant step into the unknown. You have been well trained for this so it won’t come as any surprise to learn how popular and how proficient you truly are. It is necessary to take on board these challenges, so that you gleam the true value of your worth. No one is laughing now. Take pride in yourself and in your abilities.

Scorpio 23 Oct-21 NovTrust now in your instincts and fly. You are caught up in a difficult two way situation and you cannot get passed the problem. It is not your problem anymore and so must be released for another to work out. You are not ditching the problem, you are getting out before you get burnt. Allow the Universal forces to assist in saving you. You are worth it!

Libra 23 Sep-22 Oct Never be afraid to take on a challenge. All is hotting up in your planetary sphere and you cannot ignore this calling, so as more and more challenges start to present themselves feel privileged that you are able to meet them head on and excel. It will ultimately take you on to pastures new, which will have a tinge of excitement about it – all to be revealed.

Gemini 21 May-20 JunYou are a mastermind that is heading for a fall if you are not careful. Don’t push yourself to the limit. All is in the right format and there is more time than you realise to excel on many fronts. Recognise your true potential. It comes to pass in a most extraordinary way and full complements to you from so many. See you beaming from ear to ear.

Leo 23 Jul-22 Aug It is imperative that you take the bull by the horns now and run with it. A very exciting time in your professional field of expertise will see you make drastic decisions, which will compliment your working life to full advantage. Many things that you have been working towards will culminate in big changes. All must be got through for your advancement.

Cancer 21 Jun-22 JulLearn to take life more in your stride and adopt a more positive approach. You will begin to see that life although strange has its many turns and pathways. Yours now is straight and true and what you once thought as being impossible is right there for the asking. Have a go. You won’t regret it. See an impossible situation become possible and live a little.

Virgo 23 Aug-22 Sep Now you should be looking at a career change. There will be opportunities which before were not there and it will be the single most important thing you will do in a very long time. The planetary timing is now perfect. You have wanted this change and have subsequently asked for it. It is only now that the timing is right for the perfect go-ahead.

THIS MONTH MY SCENE TALKS ART, BRANDS AND STUDIO LIFE WITH JOHN WATTS, OWNER OF THE ACCESSIBLE AND FRIENDLY ART GALLERY, STUDIO 61, IN LEE ROAD, BLACKHEATH.

Tell us where it all started John...I originally trained as a designer but then I switched to the dark side and went into marketing for more than 30 years. My wife is a hairdresser and we bought a salon five years ago and I have since been running, marketing and looking after the brand. The main part of my working life was brands and brand development but I had always kept up my work in photography.I started producing graphic images from my photographs. I talked to galleries that wanted to take my work and then a property came up which I thought would be perfect as a gallery.

So how did the gallery come into existence? It started this year when the perfect property came up a few doors from the hairdressers. We spent six weeks gutting it, stripping and painting it and making it look presentable. Now it’s been open for three months and I love it.There’s something in there for everyone but I was very clear when I started it that I didn’t want to call it a gallery because I often found them a little pompous. I wanted what I did to be accessible. It’s a very different feel – it’s a real working studio.

And what about your work?I always kept the photography going and eventually switched to digital which gave me all sorts of possibilities. My current work is actually a fusion of two things that have occupied the bulk of my life - photography and graphics. When I work on the pieces I’m looking to extract a graphical image that somehow is more powerful than simply a reproduction of what was in front of the camera.

Is there anything particular you like to photograph? It’s absolutely anything and everything. The creation of certain images – it’s almost like a voyage of discovery to start with a straight forward photograph and then experiment to see

what else can be done with it.

You must have created some amazing things throughout your business life? One thing I was instrumental in and I’m really proud of was with SmithKline Beecham and my work on Lucozade; it was a product that aides recovery and we turned it into an energy drink and created Lucozade Sport.I have created brands all over; Mars, Dolmio and I’ve travelled to places like the Middle East, Africa, Southern and Northern Europe.

So how does it feel to have your own gallery now? It’s great. It gives me an opportunity to showcase my work but also enables me to look to other people’s work and show it off as well.In terms of the gallery’s positioning, our speciality will always be photography based which does give us a point of difference. However, I am planning a week when it can be just local painters work but this will never detract from the main thrust. We’ve got two exhibitions coming up which will be very exciting; one in September, which is the work of a street photographer with images of Bangladesh and Cambodia, and this will be raising money for two schools in Cambodia. Then another in November raising money for Afghanistan Trust.

What about plans for the future?I want to clear the gallery for one week so some of the local sixth formers and their parents can see their work in a real gallery. I love being part of the community and this, for me, is about becoming involved.

You seem to live, breathe and sleep art! What do you get up to in your free time?I don’t have a lot of free time! I love to cook and I

For more information contact Studio 61: 020 3302 7376Studio61, 137 Lee road, Blackheath, SE3 9DS

do all the cooking at home – it’s quite a creative thing. I used to have a small business where I would go to cook for people in their own homes – but I ran out of time to keep it going.

And where do you live?I live above one of the shops – it means I’ve never got an excuse to be late for work! It’s a nice area just a few hundred yards outside the centre of Blackheath. There’s a real community spirit here - it’s not easy to find that near London these days. There were a lot of closed shops in the area but it’s nice to be part of the regeneration and see it flourish again.

And what about at the weekends?I love to socialise, spend time with my family, my son and enjoy interacting with people.

Do you have a favourite restaurant?I have two. There’s Villa Moura, which is Portuguese food and Sea Salt Restaurant, in Beckenham.

What is your proudest moment? In business it would have to be the Lucozade brand as I explained. But the birth of my son is by far the best moment of my life. He is my world.

You’ve accomplished quite a lot. Do you have any more ambitions?I would love to have a piece of my work

accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
