EALTH

Scholars communities give students the opportunity to live with other students who share their interests. All Scholars Programs are open to all majors. Students interact with their peers, faculty, and staff; go to seminars and lectures in their residence hall; and attend informal gatherings. Scholars also have opportunities for involvement in residence hall government, intramural sports, and various special-interest organizations.

The Health Sciences Scholars Program is based in Canfield Hall and introduces students to a wide variety of academic programs and career opportunities in the health sciences and health care professions. Undergraduate and graduate-level programs in the health sciences include the allied medical professions, dentistry, dental hygiene, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, speech and hearing sciences, or veterinary medicine.

HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOLARS

The Humanities Scholars Program offers focused study of the humanities and special co-curricular programming for students who have a strong interest in the liberal arts disciplines of the humanities. Open to any major, Humanities Scholars explore their passion for literature, languages, philosophy, history, culture and other disciplines. The Humanities Scholars reside in Haverfield.

HUMANITIES SCHOLARS

The International Affairs Scholars Program is housed in Mack Hall and provides rich opportunities for students from all majors who want to gain an in-depth understanding of global themes, international relations, and foreign languages. IA Scholars attend lectures given by a variety of experts in the international arena, participate in workshops that better acquaint them with specific international topics, and attend internationally themed programs and events.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS SCHOLARS

The Media, Marketing, and Communication Scholars Program focuses on the exchange of ideas in our society and how technology is changing the way that people interact with each other in business, science, education, and entertainment environments. Students in this program have diverse career goals and share an interest in digital media, web design, and/or media management. MMC Scholars benefit from state-of-the-art media technology in their residence at Nosker House.

MEDIA, MARKETING, AND COMMUNICATION SCHOLARS

Named in honor of Ruth Weimer Mount, the first dean of students at Ohio State, the Mount Leadership Society focuses on students from all fields of study who have a strong interest in leadership and community service. Mount Scholars develop leadership skills by engaging in a wide variety of service projects and leadership initiatives during their tenure in the program. The Mount Leadership Society Scholars live in Halloran House.

MOUNT LEADERSHIP SOCIETY

The Politics, Society, and Law (PSL) Scholars examine current social issues from a legal or political perspective through a series of discussions, debates, off-campus outings, and other activities. Residing in Haverfield House, students explore the role such issues play in society and related careers including law, journalism, business, and teaching. The PSL Scholars Program is designed to assist students in gaining an understanding of the opportunities afforded through a law or a graduate school education.

POLITICS, SOCIETY, AND LAW SCHOLARS

The Sport and Wellness Scholars Program is specifically designed to help students better understand the career opportunities available in the sport and wellness fields. Students focus on developing relationships in an environment of support with leaders in academia and the sport and wellness career field. Additionally, Scholars will explore the positive impact and unifying spirit that sport and wellness contribute to our world. Sport and Wellness Scholars live in Morril Tower.

es student profiles

What made you want to join this program? Curiosity in architecture began innocently in fourth grade when a project required me to write about an individual who has made a significant impact in Illinois. After some research I became drawn to the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. His ability to imagine and create designs which revolutionized architecture has influenced me to strive for a career in this field.

What other groups are you involved with at OSU? In addition to my classroom education I volunteer as a host for the Honors & Scholars Programs, so I get to host a prospective student for a weekend and share the student experience. I also participate in intramural sport teams throughout the year.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at OSU? There are too many funny things that happen throughout the year to recall the best.  Some of my favorites are probably the times when pranks were played on friends in the dorms.

What has been your greatest challenge thus far?The most difficult part of freshman year was overcoming the stress that is brought on by the time required outside of class dedicated to studio courses for architecture. Learning that no matter how much time you set aside to complete a project, much more ends up being put into the work than originally planned, which has been an eye-opening experience for me.

What made you want to join this program?Because I was interested in pretty much every part of the program. I play music, I love photo-editing and I have messed around with Dreamweaver, Flash and Final Cut.

What other things/groups are you involved with at OSU?I did well enough to apply to the Honors Program once I was enrolled as a student here so now I’m in the Honors Contract program in the Fisher College of Business. I also take pictures for the Business School Magazine, Fisher Ink.

What would you say has been the greatest challenge? So far, I think it may actually be working with people on group projects. I think I have always been good at working with people, but there are some people that aren’t going to want to work with you and it’s something you have to get over.

Emily NgMedia, Merketing and Communications

Hometown: Hilliard, OhioYear: Third YearMajor/Minor: Marketing and Psychology

What made you want to join this program? The fact that everyone in the group has an interest in the arts and creative thinking, and the priority scheduling.

What other things/groups are you involved with at OSU? I am a resident advisor at Baker Hall West and an officer in the OSU Jazz Club.

What is your favorite thing about the Scholars Program? My favorite thing about the Scholars Program is the fact that as a member, I get to experiment and collaborate with professionals in my field to prepare me for life after college.

Do you have any advice for incoming Scholars?Keep your academics as your main focus and meet with your advisor every quarter.

What is the best part of your Scholars Program? What kinds of things have you gained from participating? The Arts Scholars group is planning a winter colloquium concert where fine arts, dance, music, and poetry all combine into one collaborative showcase.

As we celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Mount Leadership Society it is indeed an honor for me to introduce you to the first Scholars Annual Report. Produced and designed by our very own Media, Marketing and Communication Scholars, our hope is that you will see just how much Scholars students thrive at Ohio State. I welcome your comments and suggestions for future Scholars Annual Reports and wish you a healthy and safe 2010.

Dr. Heysel is Senior Associate Director of the University Honors & Scholars Center. He returned to Ohio State in 2006. Prior to 2006, Heysel was Department Chair and Associate Professor of French at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania.
