DESCRIPTION
Scholars Annual Report 04-28-10
Citation preview
The Ohio State Scholars Program enables talented and motivated students to be part of smaller, selective communities within the larger university environment. Each of the fourteen programs focuses on a common theme or academic area of interest designed to foster learning and involvement. Scholars live together, attend classes together, and experience diverse opportunities outside of the classroom.
“Seeing the students develop confidence in talents they never knew they were good at is the best part of the program”
—Connie De Jong Arts Scholars Program Manager
Scholars Program GoalsThe Ohio State Scholars programs exist to recruit and retain high-ability students with a passion for learning. We offer focused hands-on learning opportunities which complement the classroom experience. As advocates for our students’ intellectual and social growth, the required first-year residential community–tailored to the needs of each program–encourages our Scholars to get involved locally and globally. Our mission is to foster intentional communities and connections among highly-motivated students through enriched educational opportunities which promote responsibility, engagement and growth.

Mount Leadership Society
What made you want to join this program?Community service and leadership are the extra little added bonuses that make me wake up excited to start a brand new day. There is something about making a difference in the world and giving people some of the things that I have had in my life that make me enjoy life so much.
What is your favorite thing about the Scholars Program, in general and specifically about your program?I like how the Scholars Program incorporates individuals from all walks of life. But more specifically, about the Mount Leadership Society, I love how I get the chance to work hand-in-hand with others. I wouldn’t trade that feeling for the world.
What would you say has been the greatest challenge thus far?The greatest challenge has been adapting to my surroundings. Whether it it may be changing classes, residences, new people, etc; OSU is always changing and evolving so it has, at times, been difficult for me to stay focused. With that said, I love that OSU evolves due to the fact that it is constantly pushing me to change my weakness/challenge into a strength!
How has this challenge benefited you in your college career and in your future?Change happens! It has made me a stronger person that can easily adapt to that change.
Do you have any advice for incoming Scholars?Remember that there is a time/place for everything, try new things, and always remember why you are here in the first place.
Is there a key lesson you have learned through your college career?Peer pressure is a strong force that I had to face and once I made it past being pressured by the individuals around me, my academic success and personal growth sky-rocketed!
What is the funniest thing that has happened in Scholars?Walking to class after it snows and the sidewalks are slippery. I can’t even begin to describe how many times I have slipped and fallen in the snow! Most people consider that a horrible thing, but I love it due to the fact that it never snows back home in Texas.

es student profiles
What made you want to join this program? Curiosity in architecture began innocently in fourth grade when a project required me to write about an individual who has made a significant impact in Illinois. After some research I became drawn to the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. His ability to imagine and create designs which revolutionized architecture has influenced me to strive for a career in this field.
What other groups are you involved with at OSU? In addition to my classroom education I volunteer as a host for the Honors & Scholars Programs, so I get to host a prospective student for a weekend and share the student experience. I also participate in intramural sport teams throughout the year.
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at OSU? There are too many funny things that happen throughout the year to recall the best. Some of my favorites are probably the times when pranks were played on friends in the dorms.
What has been your greatest challenge thus far?The most difficult part of freshman year was overcoming the stress that is brought on by the time required outside of class dedicated to studio courses for architecture. Learning that no matter how much time you set aside to complete a project, much more ends up being put into the work than originally planned, which has been an eye-opening experience for me.

What made you want to join this program?Because I was interested in pretty much every part of the program. I play music, I love photo-editing and I have messed around with Dreamweaver, Flash and Final Cut.
What other things/groups are you involved with at OSU?I did well enough to apply to the Honors Program once I was enrolled as a student here so now I’m in the Honors Contract program in the Fisher College of Business. I also take pictures for the Business School Magazine, Fisher Ink.
What would you say has been the greatest challenge? So far, I think it may actually be working with people on group projects. I think I have always been good at working with people, but there are some people that aren’t going to want to work with you and it’s something you have to get over.
Emily NgMedia, Merketing and Communications
Hometown: Hilliard, OhioYear: Third YearMajor/Minor: Marketing and Psychology
What made you want to join this program? The fact that everyone in the group has an interest in the arts and creative thinking, and the priority scheduling.
What other things/groups are you involved with at OSU? I am a resident advisor at Baker Hall West and an officer in the OSU Jazz Club.
What is your favorite thing about the Scholars Program? My favorite thing about the Scholars Program is the fact that as a member, I get to experiment and collaborate with professionals in my field to prepare me for life after college.
Do you have any advice for incoming Scholars?Keep your academics as your main focus and meet with your advisor every quarter.
What is the best part of your Scholars Program? What kinds of things have you gained from participating? The Arts Scholars group is planning a winter colloquium concert where fine arts, dance, music, and poetry all combine into one collaborative showcase.

I welcome your comments and suggestions for future Scholars Annual Reports and wish you a healthy and safe 2010.
Dr. Heysel is Senior Associate Director of the University Honors & Scholars Center. He returned to Ohio State in 2006. Prior to 2006, Heysel was Department Chair and Associate Professor of French at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania.
