- From the Principal….. Dear Parents, This week we welcomed Fr Anselm Okeke as our new Assistant Priest. Fr Anselm officiated our Mass on Saturday night and our whole school Mass today. We look forward to working with Fr Anselm as he joins us at St Francis Xavier Parish. On Wednesday this week our staff semi-formally farewelled Mrs Anne Barnier. Anne was an extremely dedicated and well respected member of our staff who always worked in the best interest of her students. We are grateful for the most recent support Anne has provided our Kindergarten children with their individual reading tasks, and we wish her all the very best in her retirement along with her husband, Steve. Thank you for your service to our school and to Catholic Education throughout your career. I have noticed over the last week or so an increasing number of children with inappropriate footwear. If for whatever reason your child cannot wear appropriate uniform items, it is expected that you will resolve the matter as soon as possible. Children might be expected to sit out from school lunch play if inadequate explanation is provided from parents. Electing not to purchase new shoes as we are approaching the end of the year is not an adequate excuse. Children are always growing and purchasing new shoes is a constant and expected expense for all parents. How we treat each other plays a crucial role in how our school is defined. As we come towards the end of the year, we need to ensure we maintain a high standard of student behaviour. Following the recent presentation of the new format of our school’s Key Behaviour Expectations, we would appreciate it if our parents could reinforce these expectations with their children at home to assist them with their understanding of what is expected in our school setting. You may also reference the key policies on our school website: Child Protection Policy and Procedures., Behaviour Management Policy, Student Uniform Policy, and the Bullying Prevention Policy. I congratulate David Greenhalgh (Yr5) on his recent success at the International Pan Pacific Brazilian Jiu jitsu competition in Melbourne. From the Assistant Principal……

In my article this week I would like to showcase two different year levels, being Year

6 and Year 4, and the fabulous learning that is taking place in these classes.

Year 6 has been involved in a Catholic Schools Office project called The Learning

Gain. St Francis Xavier Primary’s Year 6 team has combined with Jess Schultz from

Xavier College to improve student literacy and to prepare them for what is required

in a high school learning environment.

The purpose of the project is for both

schools to work together around a

common goal for improving the writing

of students in Years 6 and 7. Katrina

Miles and Anthony Evans have observed lessons and have had

planning sessions at Xavier College and Jess Schultz has been

working with our students every Friday during their English block.

Today our students were using criteria to provide self and peer feedback on an earlier writing sample. Quality

feedback has shown to have a strong impact on improving writing standards. This is also a valuable study skill

for high school that can help students to improve their assignment writing in not only English but across all

subject areas.

Yesterday Year 4 were creating balloon-powered vehicles in Science. Students

have been learning the differences between contact forces and non-contact forces.

We had a great discussion on Newton’s 3rd Law and how two different forces

always act upon each other. As well as theories on how the forces work on a

balloon releasing air.

The small groups loved the project and everyone

was highly engaged in this hands-on science lesson.

It was an exciting time when the students were able

to test their creations by racing each other outside.

Regards and God Bless,

Matthew Ritchie

Mini Fair Friday, 8th November - 12.30pm - 1.45pm

Our Mini Fair is fast approaching. The activities/stalls for each class are listed below. Any donations of preloved

toys or books would be most welcomed in Year 4E. Class teachers will post reminders on their communication

pages before the Mini Fair as to how you can help.

On the day children will need lots of spare change rather than notes, as stalls may not have change at first. Money

raised on the day will be donated to Catholic Mission and Our Lady of Fatima School, Turiscai. Please see last

week’s newsletter to read about how that money will help students of Our Lady of Fatima School, Turiscai.

Students will receive a raffle ticket each time they spend money at a stall. These raffle tickets will go into the

draw for thirteen major prizes, that will be drawn at the end of day. The prizes include; Waterslide vouchers,

Movie vouchers, Baskin and Robin vouchers and Coles Myer gift cards. We would like to thank Lee and Vicki

Fitzgerald from Ballina Pool for generously donating the waterslide vouchers and Paul McGrath from Ballina

Fair Cinemas for his donation of movie vouchers. We thank you in advance for your support and generosity to

those less fortunate than us. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to attend the Mini Fair.

Whole School Mass

Thank you to those families who celebrated our first Whole School Mass with us today for All Saints Day. It

was lovely to have our new Assistant Priest Father Anselm celebrate the Mass for us. Welcome Father Anselm
