Achievement Responsibility Love Diversity St Peter’s Press MAY 2019 It was 5 x 12 hour days (up at 6am back at the hotel by 6pm) packed with many visits to the school as well as being taken to Beijing’s world famous tourist attractions. Whilst in the school we taught lessons to the Chinese students supported by our students, then they taught us lessons in calligraphy and making one of China’s most famous exports - tea. On the day we were not in school we visited the Temple of Heaven, Beijing’s most sacred buildings and one of the most holy places in China. We visited the Beijing Olympic village, home to the National Stadium also affectionately nicknamed the ‘Bird’s Nest’. Then we were taken to Tiananmen Square – the largest square in the world designed to hold a million people. From there we went onto the Imperial Palace, also known as the Forbidden City and is the best-preserved imperial palace in the world. The next day was a visit to the emperor’s holiday home – the Summer Palace. Built in 1750 and only opened to the public in 1914. The most memorable day was hiking up one of the world’s most famous historic structures: The Great Wall of China. As one of the “eight wonders of the world” the students climbed to the top in just under 2 hours! Portugal is very popular with tourists because of its nice weather and educational values. This is what one student who is currently at university taught a group of children in our school (including me). From culture to music you can go on an incredible journey! Portugal is a very beautiful country with many beaches, unique and colourful houses, amazing weather and a fair share of delicious foods .

In our first few lessons we were taught about the history and language of Portugal which we found immense fun. We then learnt about the food they produce and more about their culture and the type of popular music they enjoy. This is known as Fado a genre which dates back to 1820. Amalia Rodrigues known as the Queen of Fado is one of the most recognisable people in Portugal. Portuguese people also like to listen to English rap and electro, these genres are more popular to the younger generation who enjoy parties and festivals.

These lessons were ran on a voluntarily basis during our lunch break. I am incredibly grateful for the experience.

MORE PORTUGUESE PLEASE!A record number of students are taking GCSE Portuguese this year. Although the school does not teach Portuguese in lessons, students who speak it at home have the opportunity to take an exam at GCSE level. This applies to other minority languages such as Polish and Arabic.

Cover Supervisor Mr Cullen, who supported the Portuguese students in the exam preparation, explained

“Speaking another language is a great gift and advantage. It can be very useful in your adult life and career. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.”

Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world, ahead of French and German. Portuguese is spoken by more than 200 million people in Brazil as well as in several African countries including Angola and Mozambique and of course in Portugal. Good luck to our students in their exams or as they say in Portuguese , Boa Sorte !

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing of Mrs Dermody, School Librarian on 18th March 2019. Mrs Dermody had been a member of staff at St Peter’s since October 2006. She inspired children in a unique way. She was friend to many sometimes vulnerable children and a leader who made many enjoy reading in a way no one else could. She also used the library as a vehicle for raising money for charity and there are many examples of the amounts she helped raise for The Christie, Save the Children and CAFOD to name but a few. She also established Chess as a very popular pastime and there have been Chess championships every year since 2011.

Mrs Dermody will be greatly missed by staff and students alike.

Goodbye and thank you Mrs Dermody from all at St Peter’s.

Just before Easter, seven of our Eco Schools students attended the Mayor’s Green Summit at the Lowry Theatre. This high-level conference about Greater Manchester’s fight against climate change had over 2000 attendees from business, councils and other organisations across Greater Manchester. It was led by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham and addressed by HRH The Prince of Wales and Lemn Sissay OBE, Poet and Chancellor of The University of Manchester.

Our students learned about Manchester’s world-leading goal to make our city zero carbon and zero waste by 2038, including what we can all do individually to help our city meet these essential targets and help keep global warming under 1.5 degrees. Our students also ran eco learning workshops for adults and students from other schools, learned how the city is growing more trees to improve local biodiversity and presented about green career options in front of the Mayor.

St Peter’s has been a Fairtrade school since 2010. We have just applied for our third re-accreditation. Being a Fairtrade school means we raise awareness of the social and environmental benefits that Fairtrade products bring to communities around the world. We do this through food technology lessons, form time and assemblies, by providing Fairtrade tea and coffee at staff events and parents’ evenings and by using Fairtrade ingredients in our various charity bake sales. Every year we also get involved in Fairtrade Fortnight, which encourages greater awareness of Fairtrade values among our school community through lessons in Geography, English, RE and Maths.

Unfortunately, social networking sites are a very popular place for people trying to trip you or your child up. Your child will probably not be as cautious as you are, so you need to point out the dangers.

One of these is clickjacking, where fraudsters attempting to get your unsuspecting child to click on something tempting, which results in downloading malware or tricking them into sharing private information.

Examples of clickjacking are a funny video with a clever caption such as “OMG! You won’t believe what this girl did!”, or a fake app that can show your children who has looked at their page. For more information visit:
