There is a lovely knitted school bus scarf from Morehouse Farm http://www.morehousefarm.com/KnittingKits/Scarves/SchoolBus/ which I fell in love with. We celebrate Christmas in August in our family and I wanted to make something fun for my aunt who is a school bus driver. I decided to crochet a school bus scarf for her to wear during the colder months. It’s fun and bright and I think the kids will get a kick out of it. I’ve designed my scarf to look as “real” as possible. Perfect for back to school days! Scarf is worked from the bottom of the bus up with the wheels added on afterwards.

Materials:Metric: 5.5 mm hook/US: I hookBernat Super Value WW

MC: Bright Yellow (00608) (1 ball - 197g/7oz) (You won’t use all of it, but you will use most of it! I was thinking of making a hat or bag to match.)CC1: Black (1 ball)CC2: Light grey (for wheel centres) (small amount)

Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Finished Size:Scarf: Approx. 78” long and 7” wide (from bottom of bus to roof)This scarf was designed for an adult. The long scarf allows you to wrap it around yourself once with a nice length left on either side to show off your stunning wheels! If you would like the scarf longer or shorter, simply change the # of beginning chains to suit your fancy.

Bus:With black:Ch 201.Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Switch to yellow. Ch 2. Turn.Row 2: Hdc in each sc across. (Chain 2 does not count as first hdc.) Ch 2. Turn.Row 3: Hdc in each hdc across. Ch 2. Turn.Row 4: Hdc in each hdc across. Ch 1. Turn. Row 5: Sc in first 16 sts. Switch to black (in 16th stitch, complete the sc with black). Sc across. Switch to yellow in last st. Ch 2. Turn.Row 6: With yellow: Hdc in first sc and in each sc across. Switch to black. Ch 1. Turn. At the end of row 6...you need to switch back to yellow before doing Row 7 (which is a repeat of row 5) (From Tracy Leigh from the ‘ville)

Row 7: Repeat Row 5.Row 8: With yellow, hdc in first sc and in each sc across.Row 9: Hdc first 2 hdc tog, hdc in remaining hdc across. Ch 2. Turn.Row 10: Hdc across. Ch 1. Wheels: (Make 2) (Finished size is approx 3 ½” in diameter)With grey, ch 2. Round 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc. Ch 1. Turn. (8)Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (16) Join with sl st. Fasten off.

Attach black to first sc after join. Ch 2.

Round 3: *2 dc in next st, sc* repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch 2. Ch 2.Round 4: *2 hdc in next st, hdc* repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch2. Fasten off leaving a long tail for weaving.

Finishing:Weave in all ends, leaving the fastened off tail to use for sewing the wheels to the bus. See photo for placement. Pick your best side to be the right side. I embroidered on the bird that appears above the driver’s window with scrap black yarn. Enjoy your bus!

Notes:There is one thing that I don’t especially like. I think my bus front is too long. I would make it 12 sts rather than 16 if I were to make this again. Adjustments for the decreases would also need to be made to keep the bus rounded, rather than boxy. All in all, it was a wonderful adventure. It was fun to finally design something of my own from a picture in my head of how it should look.

This scarf makes a great gift for school bus drivers, teachers and kids who love the school bus.
