We couldnt do it without your generous time and effort! Prep 100 Days of School On Wednesday our Prep students celebrated their 100 th Day of attending school. This is a special milestone for the students and also used to help teach them about number and place value. Congratulations to all our Prep students and it has been wonderful to see how much the students have achieved since they started at Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School in late January.

Environmental News ‘Greening our School’ – The Kitchen Garden Team have been working alongside Kim Aitken and with the assistance of Ms Karvinen, Ms Faiman, Ms Maydom and Ms Cafiso, who have all been focussed on helping us to be more sustainable. We are trialling some new bins in some areas of the school and using our compost bins more effectively. ‘Nude Food Days’ have been a great success as well as taking papers off food before we leave the classroom at recess and lunch time. These are just some of the things we are doing together to reduce waste at our school. Keep up the great work!

Thank you to the School Sustainability Team who are working so hard and well done on the recognition from the Glen Eira Council (see a copy of the article below in this newsletter). Another part of the work Kim has been carrying out around the school is sprucing up some of our garden beds. The one outside the SOL centre has been the major focus over the last term and Connor DeFina a past TRBPS student has been helping Kim with this gardening project as part of his school’s community service program. Connor has gone over and above the hours they usually set aside for this type of program. I would like to acknowledge (on behalf on the school community) all of the wonderful work and great effort he has completed alongside Kim (see Photo attached). Well done and thank you Connor!

State Cross Country – Will Orchard Last term a few TRBPS students attended the State Cross Country Championships and were very excited to be competing at such a high level. It takes great skill and determination to get to the state championships and we were all very proud of their efforts. Will Orchid (Year 5/6V) achieved a 15th place and Laike Favier (Year 4K) achieved a 35th place. They are definitely great student role models for TRBPS! Congratulations to Will and Laike! It was also great to congratulate these students and acknowledge their efforts at our final Term 2 assembly – we applaud your efforts!

School Surveys – Your School, Your Say! The Parent Opinion Survey is completed annually by the Department of Education and Training and is conducted using a sample of randomly selected parents at every school in Victoria. This year, about 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The survey helps our school gain an understanding of how you view our school climate, teaching and learning, student engagement, and relationships. Our school will use the results to inform school planning and improvement strategies. The 2019 survey is to be once again conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday July 22 to Sunday August 11 2019. The survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Results will be sent back to our school at the end of September. For more information see the DET website - Parent Opinion Survey

The annual ‘Parent Opinion Survey’ is currently now active for 2019 and the parents who were randomly selected have been advised via Compass and given a password to log onto the ORIMA survey website. The staff are currently completing the annual ‘Staff Opinion Survey’ as well. This data is all used alongside of the student NAPAN data to complete the review of our School Annual Implementation Plan for 2019, in order to gauge how we think we are performing against the targets that have been set for this year from our new School Strategic Plan. The ‘Student Attitudes to School Survey’ was completed at the end of last term. That data is due back now. This will all be reported on at School Council’s August and September meetings and in the next few school newsletters.

Kitchen Garden News - Tucker Road Garden Group The Garden group are striving to make our garden beds look better. Today we started by transplanting some of our Daisy and Cornflower seedlings from ‘The Patch’, out into a garden bed within our school grounds. My special helpers today were Mitch from 3E and Madi from 3T. They helped me by guiding the 8 or so prep students who joined our group. Making sure the seedlings were planted and watered properly. If any students would like to join this group it runs on a Tuesday recess and Thursday lunch. Meet me at the garden once you have finished eating and placed your lunch box in your tub. (Kim Aitken)

Extract from the ‘Glen Eira City Council News - Sustainability’ Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary taking strides towards zero waste Making a few simple changes has resulted in drastic waste reduction at Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School. After taking up Council’s food scrap recycling service in November 2018, students wanted to do more to reduce their waste. Soft plastics were the initial area of focus for students. Student Representative Council captains and Cooking and Garden Coordinator Kim Aitken worked together to introduce its first Nude Food Day* recently. Children are encouraged to br ing in lunch and snacks without any excess packaging (preferably none!) The students have been recording their plastic waste from lunches; 201 pieces of waste were collected on the first day in Term 4, 2018. On the second day in Term 1, 2019, they reduced their waste by 87 pieces. These students and teachers are inspiring and we look forward to hearing more on the progress of their Nude Food days*.

School Council News At the last School Council meeting in June we discussed various work and maintenance possibilities to improve Rain-bow House as a more user friendly facility into the future. I also announced that we have been recently allocated some funding from the Government to commence the design plans of a new administration building and prep classroom block using our school original School Masterplan. We have also completed some fencing around the school to further protect the students and our school assets. This also assists in ensuring our school is even more compliant in terms of the’ Child Safe Standards’. We need to ensure that we are not used as a thoroughfare between Tucker Road and Valerie Street dur-ing school times and on weekends. It is our intention to start a process of locking the internal school gates during school time with the only access being through the school office, where everyone is expected to sign in. This process has in-cluded the locking of private house gates that enter onto our basketball and oval areas. As we are currently in the pro-cess of upgrading the school locks, this process of locking the internal gates during the school day will be slowly phased in. The gates would be ideally locked from 9.15am and then unlocked at 3.15pm each school day and remain closed on weekends and holidays. More news on the exact date this process will commence will be added to the newsletter and/or sent out via Compass. A huge thank you also to the PFA for all of their great fundraising efforts so far this year, this money has been very well used to support the purchase of new Literacy resources right across the school. We look forward to the upcoming Bingo evening scheduled for August 3. Justine Coleman who is the SC President for 2019 will update you further again after the August SC meeting.

Kind regards,

Robyn Farnell

Principal – TRBPS

Accidents at School Parents are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance for parents. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Policies are reasonably low cost. The Department cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy or which policy to purchase.
