What is Farm2School?
Farm2School links children to nearby small and mid-size farms that producefresh, healthy and minimally processed foods served at school
Farm2School Goals:• Provide healthy foods
• Build health eating habits
• Enhance food literacy
• Strengthen local economy & markets for small/mid farmers
• Build vibrant local food systems
• Support environmental stewardship
F2S is a positive strategy to address:
•Rising rates of obesity and diet-related disease
•The loss of smaller, independent farms
And it also….
Builds relationships between schools, kids, farmers
and community
The 3 C’s of Farm2School:
• Cafeteria• Classroom
• Community
Our area has a year-round supply of F2S foods:
• Vegetables• Fruits• Grains• Meat• Dried beans• Honey, wild rice, etc.
F2S can take many forms:
• F2S Foods in school lunch and snacks
• Taste testing • Classroom curriculum
And….
• School gardening• Cooking classes• Visits to farms• Farmers at school
We are part of a nation-wide movement:
Farm2School programs are now happening in all 50 states, up from a handful 10 years ago
In Minnesota:123 districts engaged in F2S :
