SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
P.I.I.E. FUNDRAISER: SILENT AUCTION DONATIONS NEEDED
Each year the New Sarepta Ag. Society hosts the "Crooked Ice
Jugspiel” which is a milk jug curling bonspiel. The Ag. Society generously
allows P.I.I.E. to run a silent auction during the Jugspiel.
For several years now, the silent auction has been a major source of our
fundraising income. To help ensure a successful auction, we will soon be
asking each classroom to collect donations of either cash or items for
a "theme basket".
The theme baskets are just one aspect of the auction. We also approach
businesses for donations of cash, services or products. In the past we
have had bicycles, airline tickets and Oilers tickets donated. These larger
items really increase bidding. If you know of a company or individual
who would like to donate something for our Silent Auction, please use
the corporate sponsor letter attached to this newsletter to ask for
donations. More copies of this letter can also be obtained through the
school office or from any school council executive member.
Baskets will be available for viewing/bidding at the New Sarepta Ag.
Society’s Jugspeil held on Saturday, March 26th, from 9:00a.m. - 7:00 pm
at the New Sarepta Agriplex. Thank you for your continued
support which greatly benefits the students of NSE!

KIDS IN THE KNOW Kids in the Know is a safety program designed to empower children and reduce their risk of victimization. It focuses on building self-esteem through teaching critical problem-solving skills. The program uses an inclusive, community-based approach to heighten safety awareness. The core premise of the curriculum is based on key root safety strategies and environments which are reinforced and practiced throughout every grade level. The program also deals with internet safety. Thanks to our School Council this program was purchased for our school. An information letter and parent consent form will be sent home to you when your child’s class begins this program.

Did you know 60 minutes of daily activity helps reduce stress and can boost brain power? The Leduc Recreation Center (LRC) offers the students
of NSE a chance to win 2 free pass to the LRC (one
child and one adult pass)!
Students are asked to write their name on any used
wristband from a recreational facility and enter in the
draw box in the school office for a chance to win. A draw
will be made once a month.
Don’t miss this opportunity to have fun with friends and
family, and enjoy the benefits of being healthy and
active! For more information on the Leduc Recreation Centre call

which were handed out to some of our
students prior to Christmas.
NSE Learning Common Taking Shape
In November, New Sarepta Elementary School was a
fortunate recipient of Black Gold Regional Schools
(BGRS) 2015-16 Innovation and Implementation Fund.
The focus of this fund revolves around BGRS’ core
values: student focused learning, relationships,
supportive environments, passion, and managing
resources responsibly. All Black Gold Schools were
encouraged to either create new and innovative
projects or duplicate previously completed projects.
Fortunate for us, we received $4,079 to put towards
the creation of a 21st Century Learning Common that
will foster inquiry-based, personalized learning for
students (in our old computer lab). Within our
Learning Common our goal is develop an open,
comfortable, and innovative learning space for
students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 to engage in
flexible, student-centered, differentiated learning
opportunities.
We thank Black Gold School School Board very much
for this funding and the wonderful learning opportuni-
ties it will create for our students. As well, we thank
the IODE (Independent Order of the Daughters of
the Empire) for a $500 grant to purchase books for
our learning studio AND our School Council who also
plans to support this project with technology
enhancements, using their Casino funds.
CANADIAN TIRE MONEY
& CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS We thank you for sending in Canadian Tire “money” and
Campbell soup labels and ask that you please continue to
do so! We are able to purchase various educational and
sports items with this.
Special thanks to the Martel family for counting the
Campbell soup labels for us! It is greatly appreciated!

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES
During the winter months please be aware of the Inclement Weather Procedure within our District:
* The decision to operate or cancel busses is based on the best information at the time of the decision with the
safety of the students the first concern.
It is always the prerogative of the parents/guardians to keep students home should they feel it is unsafe
to send students to school in inclement weather regardless as to whether or not the busses are operating.
INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES
School bus operators are responsible for the safety of your child and take poor weather and road conditions very
seriously. There may be a day where the bus does not operate due to these poor conditions. We do not have a
certain temperature as our Alberta weather seldom gets to -40C, but we do have days where a winter storm may
prevent us from operating that day and the next day we need to rely on Public Works departments being able to
clear roads for us. If the bus is not operating:
1. Check the blackgold.ca website for information
2. Ensure your PowerSchool contact information is correct as a voice mail and text message will be sent out prior
to 7:00 am
3. Call 780-955-6025 for our transportation after hours greeting for details.
The information will be posted as soon as the decision is made. Schools are always open unless there is a specific
school related emergency like a water main break.
In addition:
* Students should know what to do in the event that a bus is late or does not show due to the weather or
mechanical difficulties.
*All students must be properly dressed for the weather conditions.
*If busses are sent home early, schools have procedures in place to notify parents prior to sending students
home.
IMPORTANT PROCEDURE FOR OUR SCHOOL:
*To ensure student safety it is necessary for us to confirm all absences on bus cancellation/inclement weather days.
To assist us with this procedure we ask that parents please contact the school, or email [email protected] to
confirm their child(ren)’s absence on bus cancellation days.
Alberta Education Information
Accountability Pillar Surveys
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education
and school authorities to ensure that we’re equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various
aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of
student learning.
From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In
January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students
in grades 4, 7 and 10 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English and French, the
parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving,
so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016 and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year
Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
