Shamrock Gardens Elementary SMART Goals
• Provide a duty-free lunch period for every teacher on a daily basis. • Provide duty-free instructional planning time for every teacher under G.S. 115C-105.27 and -301.1, with the goal of
proving an average of at least five hours of planning time per week, to the maximum extent that the safety and proper supervision of students may allow during regular student contact hours.
• Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, Shamrock Gardens Elementary will provide every student with a positive school climate, under CMS regulation JICK-R, by providing character building lessons, and promoting a safe learning environment free of bullying and harassment
• Maximize academic achievement in a personalized 21st-century learning environment for every child to graduate college- and career-ready.
• For the 2016-2017 Academic Year, Shamrock Garden Staff will work to strengthen Driven by Data Instruction so that we will make growth in all subgroups with a focus on our subgroup population of African-Americans and those scholars we serve that are Economically Disadvantaged. In addition, Shamrock Gardens will make a minimum of 10% point growth in all areas of the EOG.
• For the 2016-2017 Academic Year, school faculty and staff will work to enhance the school culture of Shamrock Gardens for scholars and staff members. We will utilize leadership and collaboration with peers so Shamrock Gardens will have no more than 7.5% teacher turnover, meaning no more than two highly qualified teachers will leave Shamrock Gardens Elementary, with the exception of those that leave for promotions and/or move out of state.

Shamrock Gardens Elementary Profile
Shamrock Gardens Elementary School is a partial magnet school that serves three diverse neighborhoods in east Charlotte—Country Club Heights, Plaza Midwood, and Plaza Shamrock. It currently serves approximately 500 students across grades Pre-Kindergarten of 2 pre-kindergarten classrooms, 4 kindergarten classrooms, first grade classrooms, 3 second grade classrooms, 4 third grade classrooms, 3 fourth grade classrooms and 3 fifth grade classrooms. In addition to these classroom teachers, Shamrock Gardens has an instructional staff that includes a physical education teacher, a project based learning teacher, an art teacher, a music teacher, one EC teacher with one full time EC assistant, an ESL teacher, two Pre-K teacher assistants, two teacher assistants, one Reach Associate, two Title I tutors, a shared speech language pathologist, a shared school psychologist, and a school counselor. We benefit greatly from the support of a full time nurse, a Communities in School representative, a fully staffed cafeteria, a BMT, a head custodian with one part time custodian, and a registrar and financial secretary. The Instructional Leadership team consists of the School Administration (Principal and Assistant Principal) and a K-1 Multi Classroom Leader, two Senior Reach Teachers to support second and third grade, and an MCL to support grades 4- 5. Several teachers are provided additional leadership opportunities via the Success by Design Initiative. Two of our teachers serve as Master Reach Teachers in addition to their classroom duties and 9 others teachers serve in the capacity of Reach Team Teachers.
Currently, our class size average is 22 students per classroom. During the 2015-2016 school year, Shamrock Gardens met our expected growth as determined by EVAAS and demonstrated growth through an increase in performance on several measurements. On North Carolina EOG’s Shamrock Gardens met expected growth and grew one letter grade. And by the end of the 2015-2016 school year 90% of kindergarteners left reading on grade level.
Each grade level is provided with 5 hours of weekly Professional Learning Community time and a half day planning every other week, for a total of 26 hours each month. These PLC meetings are planned by the Reach Team Teachers on each grade level and supported by grade level MCLs and SRTs, in addition to administrators. Each day PLC time is structured to ensure that student needs are consistently met, with scheduled time for Intervention Team/Enrichment, reading and math planning, data analysis, and time for teachers to contact and build relationships with parents and guardians.

To ensure students are emotionally prepared to succeed in school and life, Shamrock Gardens uses a common curriculum and language to provide students with weekly Morning Meetings that develop social and emotional skills in students, offering them the opportunity to share their feelings and experiences with their teachers and peers. In addition to Morning Meetings, the entire community participates in a monthly Dragon Discussion, discussing character traits, interacting with guest speakers, and celebrating each other. Each of these elements helps to develop a strong school-wide culture that supports the development of the social, emotional, and academic skills of each student.
In keeping with our focus on educating the whole child, Shamrock Gardens has committed to providing a wide range of opportunities for students to discover and develop their natural talents. Students have the opportunity to learn Spanish in Kindergarten and first grade, receive chess instruction from a nationally recognized chess player in second grade, and participate in Lego robotics curricula in grades 4 and 5. Additionally, students receive instruction in art, music, and physical education each week in order to develop a variety of techniques to express themselves and their learning. This year, Shamrock Gardens will continue offering Friday clubs, which will provide students with the opportunity to participate in learning experiences of their choosing, taught by community volunteers. Our clubs include Minecraft, Yoga, Pottery, Student Government, Odyssey of the Mind, World Travel, Legos, Computer Programming, Creative Writing, Dance, Music Appreciation, Arts and Crafts, Painting, Gardening, Spanish, Board Games, Etiquette, Chess, First-Aid, Jump Rope, Photography, and Glee. Our clubs provide students with the chance to discover a wide range of learning opportunities.
In addition to clubs that occur during the school day, twice a month Shamrock Gardens also holds extra-curricular activities after school including Imagination Chapter, Orchestra, Chess Club, Girls on the Run, and Beta Club.
Shamrock Gardens has a deeply involved Parent-Teacher Association with over 200 members. The PTA supports the school via several fundraising platforms, including the annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K, the sale of specific products, school spirit apparel sales, and other creative projects. In addition to fundraising, the PTA hosts numerous parental engagement events through the year including Lucky’s Birthday Celebration, Movies in the Park in the fall and spring, Spanish Lotería Night, Beautification Day, and our annual Fall Carnival. The PTA also provides support through volunteer hours. Specifically, the PTA supports the Helping Hands program, where volunteers commit to weekly hours to prepare copies, bulletin boards, and communication, providing teachers with additional time to plan engaging and rigorous instructions for students.

The school has a large number of community partners that provide various supports to meet the needs of the school, its students, and the community it serves. Current partnerships include the Country Club Heights Neighborhood Association, the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association, Slow Food USA, Hands On Charlotte, Folger Subaru, The Vine UMC, Trinity Episcopal, CMPD, Discovery Education Studios, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library, In addition to these established partnerships, community members, both in Charlotte and elsewhere, support the school through the funding of Donors Choose projects, Go Fund Me campaigns, and other crowdsourcing mediums.
With Shamrock Gardens working to continue to promote all means of engaging stakeholders, the school currently holds monthly engagement forums through Coffee with Principal Reeves, School Leadership Team Meetings, and PTA Meetings. In addition, Shamrock Gardens hosts quarterly curriculum showcase events where parents participate in a 30 minute crash course on the Common Core prior to visiting classrooms to see scholars highlighting the curriculum of the quarter through performances and presentations.
To help diversify our engagement opportunities, Shamrock Gardens currently holds monthly English Language Parent Education Courses. Shamrock’s Hispanic Parent Community Meetings are also held twice a quarter to help promote engagement for families of all backgrounds, including those with language barriers. To help increase engagement, Shamrock Gardens currently tracks all families’ involvement with Compact Points and awards all families actively involved in their scholars’ education at the end of the year with a Compact Party Celebration.
As a Learning Immersion and Talent Development Magnet School of Excellence, Shamrock Gardens prides itself on the cross-curricular work that happens both in and outside of the classroom. Each quarter the entire school focuses on concepts that enhance scholar’s understanding of character education and academic work through society. Through these concepts, Shamrock Gardens hosts monthly Dragon Discussions to review the quarterly concept, character focus of the month, introduce new school-wide character education texts, and engage scholars in a lesson of the month. Teachers then take these concepts and areas of focus back into the classroom to plan for concept-based units that integrate math, reading, science, and social studies concepts into a unit for scholars to see the real-world interconnectedness of curriculum. Students also attend quarterly field trips based on the concepts they are learning in class or attend learning opportunities within the school.

In order to promote a love for literacy, Shamrock Gardens currently host two kick off weeks to increase awareness and a love for reading across the community. In the Fall Shamrock Garden’s hosts Love to Read Week consisting of the annual
Read-a-Thon, Buddy Reading Day, dressing as a favorite story character, and more! In the spring Shamrock Gardens participates in Read Across America Week focusing in on amazing non-fiction books in and outside of the school.
Shamrock Gardens is also proud to be a sight of the “40 Book Project” initiative. In addition to providing home libraries for all scholars who are not fortunate enough to have books at home, the 40 Book Project also serves as a reading incentive for our scholars. Every time students read 20 picture books or 5 chapter books at home, students are eligible to go shopping in our book room, which holds over 7,000 brand new books to spark scholars’ interest in reading.
Shamrock Gardens is proud to offer many unique programs, opportunities for school involvement, and engagement activities to its students, parents, families and community. These include:
--Monthly Parent Engagement Coffee with Principal Reeves: Each month, on the first Friday of the month, Principal Reeves hosts interested parents and community members at Coffee with Principal Reeves. This is an opportunity for stakeholders to find out more about what is happening at the school, ask questions about school initiatives and programs and share ideas for growth with the Principal.
--The Annual Shamrock Gardens Compact Party: Shamrock Gardens is proud to host one of the longest running annual compact point celebrations within CMS. Each year, parents, students, and the school sign a compact agreeing to take on a shared responsibility in supporting student growth. Families are provided compact points for supporting the school, attending school events, participating in engagement and learning activities, and visiting their scholar at school, amongst several other things. At the end of each school year, families and businesses, in conjunction with the school and PTA, plan and host a party to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the school year. Families with a specific number of compact points are invited to enjoy food, friendship, educational opportunities, and dancing.
--ELL Parent Education Courses: Shamrock Gardens offers parents the opportunity to attend classes, run by the school’s ESL teacher, that are designed to help parents build their English language skills and develop increased skills to

support their scholars at home with school work. These well attended classes also help to build relationships amongst parents and family members throughout the Shamrock Gardens community.
--Hispanic Parent Community Meetings: These monthly meetings are designed to engage Hispanic Parents and provide them a voice within decision making structures in the school. In addition to this goal, these meetings also allow for parents and school staff to collaborate on activities that raise awareness for the culture and history of our Hispanic families.
--Diverse Field Trips and Assemblies: The Shamrock Gardens community is united in its belief that true learning can take place anywhere, at any time. In staying true to this belief, we offer several unique learning experiences to students, both within the walls of the school and outside of the school. Recent learning experiences have included presentations by Opera Carolina, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Bright Star Touring Theater, amongst several others. Recent field trips have included opportunities to visit Discovery Place, the State Capitol in Raleigh, visits to the NC Zoo and various farms in the region, a visit to the Levine JCC for its Butterfly Project, opportunities to visit several museums throughout the Charlotte area, and trips to Junior Achievement's BizTown program. Each of these trips are supported by the Shamrock community, the PTA, and committed parents, allowing students to have a diverse set of enriching learning experiences during their time at Shamrock Gardens.
--Love to Read Week and Read Across America Week: Twice a year, Shamrock Gardens celebrates the joy of reading, a subject that is vitally important to the growth of our students as scholars and as citizens. During these weeks, students participate in a Read-A-Thon, Drop Everything and Read Day, dress as their favorite book characters, host buddy readers from other classrooms, and welcome community guest readers into their classroom to share their favorite books. During this time, as well as throughout the year, we celebrate reading as something that can bring joy, excitement, and knowledge to all of us.
--Lucky’s Library Project: Shamrock Gardens is excited to be able to partner with a local non-profit, the 40 Book Project, to support reading throughout each child’s day. In conjunction with the 40 Book Project, Shamrock scholars are rewarded with new books to build a home library each time they read a set number of books. This collaboration is designed to provide each Shamrock scholar with at least 40 books for their own personal home library. The 40 Book Room is stocked

with several high interest texts for scholars and is supported by donations from the community, businesses, and funds raised by Shamrock Gardens.
--The League of Extraordinary Dragons and the League of Enchanting Dragons: These unique programs are designed to provide extra support to Shamrock scholars. Teacher identified students meet weekly to discuss various topics and perform schoolwide community service projects. Mentors from the community meet with scholars as well, sharing meals and discussing ways in which these Dragons can always be growing as scholars and citizens. The Leagues are both fortunate to have a number of community supporters including the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, students from the Charlotte School of Law, members of the Carolina Panthers, and committed community members.
--Cardboard Challenge: Shamrock Gardens hosts an annual Cardboard Challenge, a learning experience inspired by Caine from the popular story, “Caine’s Arcade.” Students work with teachers and each other to design and build products that reflect a given idea, belief, or theme--all from cardboard and other recycled materials! It culminates in a school wide open house where parents and community members are invited to see the amazing creations of Shamrock scholars!
--Imagination Chapter: Shamrock is pleased to be one of only a handful of Imagination Chapter sites throughout the world. During this after school club, students explore new technologies and work collaboratively, using various skills and techniques, to learn more about themselves, new technology, and the limitless possibilities of their own imaginations!
--Orchestra: Shamrock Gardens is supported by The Vine UMC in this endeavor, allowing for a weekly after school club that allows students to be exposed and develop skills in various musical instruments. This club culminates with several performances at churches and retirement communities throughout the Charlotte area.
--Chess Club: In order to build off the positive experiences Shamrock students have in chess as second graders, this weekly after school club allows Shamrock students to continue developing their chess skills. In addition to after school open play, the Chess Club participates in various tournaments throughout the Charlotte area.
--Girls on the Run: We are proud to be a host site for the Girls on the Run club, which empowers female students to learn more about their own skills and building confidence in themselves through running and community building. Each winter, Shamrock runners participate in the Charlotte Girls on the Run 5K.

--Beta Club: We are the proud host of a Beta Club chapter for upper grades students. This junior service organization recognizes students for their academic achievement, character, and community service. Each year, the club chooses and completes several community service projects as a cohort, while also encouraging students to perform community service on an individual level to give back to their community.
--Curriculum Showcases: Three times a year, Curriculum Showcases are held to highlight student work, promote parent- teacher communication, and open the doors of the school and its classrooms to parents and families. In an effort of make sure all stakeholders are educated on school and district initiatives and have the most up to date information and resources to support their scholars, each Showcase begins with a short Community Forum designed to provide skills and knowledge to parents and families.
--Quarterly Feedback (parents and students): Shamrock Gardens is a school that lives what it teaches its students--that we can always improve in all that we do. In an effort to do so, parents and students are provided with opportunities each quarter to reflect on the school's performance and provide feedback on ways in which the school can better serve its students, families and communities.
--Paideia Seminars: Paideia Seminars are held weekly to encourage students to engage in discussions about current events and topics that are deeply relevant to them. All teachers are trained by the school’s Magnet Coordinator to facilitate these deep discussions that build both a classroom community and student knowledge base.
--Monthly Dragon Way Celebrations: We believe that students who consistently engage in positive actions deserve to be rewarded. In order to do so, we hold monthly Celebrations to celebrate the students who consistently meet the expectations of the Dragon Way! These range from Cupcake Dance Parties, to surprise recess celebrations, to popcorn and movie celebrations!
