Summer Career Plans Survey – Class of 2016

OVERVIEW

Each year Career Services surveys the Penn Engineering students to gather information about their summer work

experience. Students scheduled to graduate in August 2015, December 2015 and May 2016 are included in this

analysis. Career Services contacted each student by email list-serv in August 2015 requesting that they complete

the on-line survey. In October 2015, the Academic Programs Office of the School of Engineering and Applied

Science sent the survey again to all applicable students. In December 2015 and January 2016, personalized emails

were sent by Career Services to each student who had not yet responded. In addition, summer experiences were

included from review of information reported in our online job application system, PennLink with follow-up

verification by the student. Information was collected for 405 students of the 432 eligible in the Class of 2016.

This combination of data resulted in a 93.7% response rate.

The top industry sectors in which students accepted internships were manufacturing, technology, energy, and higher

education research labs/centers. Within the manufacturing sector, the largest percentages of internships were in

biomedical products, aerospace, electronics/robotics chemicals. Of those students reporting the date they received

the internship offer they accepted, nearly 95% received their offer by the end of May 2015. This is similar to last

year.
