Dear Parents, Welcome back to Term 4 Welcome back to Term 4 and the final eleven weeks of the 2013 school year. What a busy time of the year this is for our school. Keep an eye on future newsletters as they will contain details about up coming events. Chaplaincy Program Last year the school applied to be part of the Federal Government’s National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program. As a result of this we have Agnes Capanda, a Wellbeing worker, who works in our school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to support all members of the school community. A School Welfare worker’s job is to work closely with the whole school community to provide students and their families (and staff) with appropriate support. Please contact Agnes on the school number 9366 2071 if you wish to see her about any matter whatsoever. 2014 Prep Enrolments Have you got a child turning 5 before April 30 next year? If so they are due to be enrolled at school. Please contact the office to collect an enrolment pack. The school will be conducting an orientation program in November so it is important that your child is enrolled to be included as part of this program. Staff Leave The following staff are currently on leave: Pam Cassidy has tendered her resignation effective 15.10.2013. I take this opportunity to thank Pam for her contribution to SAEPS over the many years she was here. A more formal farewell will be forthcoming.

Please contact Anne-Maree Kliman if you did not receive a copy. Parents are welcome to discuss their child’s individual results with their child’s classroom teacher. I encourage you to ring to make an appointment if you would like to speak about the report sent home. Sun Smart A reminder that in Term 4 our Sun Smart Policy is implemented, requiring all students to wear a navy blue broad-brimmed or legionnaires style hat at all times, whilst outside. Please note that caps and bandanas are not appro-priate, and as such are not part of the school uni-form. Our school rule is No Hat No Play…. This means that students without a hat will be required to sit in a shaded place for the duration of the recess and lunch breaks. Anne-Maree Kliman Principal

School Chaplaincy Many of you may know that Agnes has been the
Wellbeing Worker at St Albans East PS since October
2012, but you may not know much about her work in
the school.
New brochures explaining her role are now available
from the front office and directly from Agnes. Agnes
runs a range of programs and could always use extra
helping hands; she is also looking for people to be part
of a new Chaplaincy and Wellbeing Support
Group. You are welcome to catch up with Agnes at
the school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays if would like
to know more about her work and ways that you can
be involved in supporting it.

BYO TOOLS
All students attending
must be accompanied by
Student Absences. It is extremely important that you notify the school with an explanation for any absences for your child either in writing, over the phone or by speaking to your child’s teacher. Some important points to remember are:
Students need to attend school regularly to make the most of educational opportunities and to reach their full potential.
There is a direct link between school attendance and achievement in life.
Poor patterns of attendance in the early years lead to poor patterns of attendance throughout the school years.
Poor attendance makes it difficult for children to form positive relationships with their peers.
How many days has your child missed in a term?
0-3 This is within normal range. A child with this attendance rate is able to take full advantage of
the teaching and learning opportunities available to them. 4-5 This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over one
year of learning between Prep and Year 10. 6-9 This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss out on up to two
years of learning between Prep and Year 10. 10+ This is a very poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss over two and
one half years of learning between Prep and Year 10.
SAEPS First Official Playgroup On Thursday 10th October we (SAEPS) held our first playgroup for the year. Children sang songs, explored, created, played and
read a number of books. Our favourite book this week was the very hungry caterpillar and we made a beautiful butterfly.
Remember all are welcome, so tell your friends! They do NOT need to have children at the school.
We hope to see you on Thursday at 9.15 in building 3.
KONNECTIVE- A SMARTPHONE COMMUNICATION SOLUTION

Dear Parent/carer
Tuning into Kids is a free of cost parenting program that could make a positive
difference to your child’s development both at home and at school.
What is emotional intelligence? Emotional intelligence is about your child developing the
skills to be able to use their knowledge of emotions to
make decisions, calm themselves down and manage anger
and conflict. The group is parent focused to help you
understand your child and respond to difficult situa-
tions as well as to help you develop strategies to use at
home.
Why is emotional intelligence important? Children who have greater emotional intelligence and
awareness have been shown to:
have greater success with friendships and better rela-
tionships
have better concentration, which means they are more likely to be success-
ful academically
be more able to cope when they are angry/upset
have better skills at home, school and in the community as they grow and
develop.

Air Pollution and Asthma School age students and young children with asthma can often have breathing difficulties when exposed to air pol-
lution. Air pollution can occur:
Outdoors – smog (made up of nitrogen oxides and ozone), bushfires, cigarette smoke. Indoors – formaldehydes/resins (some building materials), volatile organic compounds (found in paints, furniture,
cleaning products), cigarette smoke, poorly maintained gas appliances. The most important way to reduce the impact of air pollution on your child’s asthma to avoid the pollutant com-
pletely if possible. Stay indoors on high smog days, close windows and external doors
Make sure you have a bush-fire plan if you live in a bushfire prone area
Make sure your child’s asthma is well controlled and that you and your child know what to do if their asthma gets worse
Make sure your gas appliances are serviced regularly by a registered or licensed gasfitter and that there is ad-equate ventilation in rooms containing gas appliances
Choose building items, furniture, paints and wood items that are certified to emit low levels of formaldehyde
and volatile organic compounds. For more information about air pollution and asthma, contact The Asthma Foundation of Victoria
on 1800 ASTHMA (278 462) or visit www.asthma.org.au.
