INTRODUCTION The Tamworth High School community believes that school uniform is a desirable feature of our school and has clearly indicated over many years that it endorses the ongoing practice of support a school uniform. The N.S.W Department of Education & Communities policy regarding school uniform specifies that in such cases, schools must develop and implement a suitable policy that represents this community support. Consistent with this community support, Tamworth High School students are required to wear appropriate uniform to school each day. This policy seeks to provide clear guidelines for students, staff and parents/carers to support students conform with this community requirement. Uniform is an important part of the development of the school as it presents the first (and often lasting) impression people form about the school and more importantly, its students. At Tamworth High School, we want our students to be seen in a positive way. There are a number of specific advantages uniform gives to students and parents.

Safety of students – intruders into the school grounds can be easily identified if all students wear the required school uniform. It also provides security in the sense of easily identifying where students come from should there be an accident.

Cost – economically, school uniform presents a better alternative to buying name brands and the demand to continually upgrade to the latest trends and fads.

Learning social responsibility – students need to learn that sometimes the wellbeing of the whole society over-rides the individual beliefs of some of its members e.g. road rules.

Identity - school uniform promotes a sense of identity, common purpose, consistency and unity in the daily activities of students. Wearing uniform develops pride in achievement and school, which helps establish the positive culture of the school.

School Image – school uniform promotes a positive image to our community which in turn benefits students e.g. offers of support for work experience placement, sponsorship, employment.

Training for the workplace - uniform and acceptable dress codes are commonplace in most workplaces.

Equity – school uniform prevents unnecessary competition in clothing between students and provides a low cost clothing option.
