Senator Steve Ogden, who has represented the district since 1997, announced his retirement earlier today. District 5 includes Brazos, Freestone, Grimes, Leon, Limestone, Madison, Milam, Robertson, Walker and Williamson Counties. “After a great deal of consideration and with the support of my wife and family, today I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Texas State Senate," Rep. Schwertner state d. "I have the utmost respe ct for the job that Senator Ogde n has done, and feel it's important that the people of Senate District 5 continue to be represented by someone who shares their values and conservative principles: a government that lives within its means, taxes which are low and fair, and a regulatory environmen t that doesn’t punish small businesses." Campaign spokesman Keats Norfleet noted that Schwertner’s recent reelection kickoff for the Texas House was a resounding success, with over 500 attendees from around the district and ove r $100,000 raised for his campaig n. “Rep. Schwertne r will kickoff this State Senate campaign with a broad base of popular support and over $300,000 cash on hand,” added Norfleet. This August, during Governor Rick Perry's presidential campaign announcement in South Carolina, Rep. Schwertner was publicly acknowledged by Perry for his leadership in the Texas House:  “Dr. Schwertner, we have led Texas based on some just really pretty simple guiding principles,” said Perry. “One is don’t spend all of the money. Two is keeping the taxes low and under control. Three is you have your regulatory climate fair and predictable.
