Science and its Fiction

Science fiction has been part of our lives since people started to write stories and challenge science and its limits. One might think that science fiction is impossible or farfetched but we have reached to an age where science fiction is actually being considered, tested and treated like it is actual science experiments. Many modern day experiments have tested and theorized science fiction giants such as, teleportation, holograms, time travel, space travel as well as fictional advanced weaponry. The world is ready to accept and work towards the idea that of applying science fiction in real life, which would greatly benefit and accommodate our everyday life and shift our lives into the future by improving and expanding our methods of transportation, communication, military, and general lifestyle. If a way was found to merge science fiction and works of fiction with our current society then we would indeed be taking a huge step towards the future.

How can science fiction be used to beam us into the future?

The application of some or all of the concepts that fall under science fiction could help in enhancing the world greatly it can change our world completely and provide us with a futuristic and technologically advanced world, making regular everyday things easier and more accessible.

-Fictional weapons such as the "Death Ray" in Star Wars and many others could make wars very easy and far more dangerous. Yet they can also enhance our military as well as our military defenses.

-Teleportation could be used throughout the world as an easy way of transporting goods and a faster and easier method of travelling

-Holograms could be the next new form of communication that enhances our commuting technologies and revolutionizes things like television, phones, and even schools; one can have a hologram of a teacher and board to teach them at home.

These are only a few concepts of science fiction that could change the way we live, but of course they are highly theoretical and not very accessible technologies yet.

How Strong is the Connection between Science and Sci-fi?

Science fiction isn’t that different from science and physics, however different topics that fall under science fiction may vary when it comes to scientific validity, practicality, and applicability. It isn’t very hard to sort the fact from the fiction but a lot of things such as, teleportation and holograms, fall into a grey area where it is technically possible yet under certain rules and circumstances. Many of these topics and concepts are theoretical but others have been tested as well

experimented with.Teleportation: experiments such as the IBM Quantum Teleportation proved that the teleportation of very small particles is very possible and highly functional, however only really tiny particles and objects can be teleported as it is very hard

and takes crazy amounts of energy to teleport a larger object. In "Star Trek" teleportation occurred by transforming matter into energy then transporting it and then remaking it into matter again. That however is impossible as the energy needed

to do so is larger than that of a nuclear bomb. In real life however teleportation occurred by scanning the particle or object to the subatomic level then sending the information to a machine that recreates it as the original copy gets destroyed. This has worked with photons and diamonds as well as other tiny objects and particles. From a scale of one to ten, one being fiction and ten being fact teleportation would score a seven.

Holograms: there are many hologram experiments that have occurred all over the world and applied in everyday life such as stage performances and bringing back dead musicians to life on stage. These holograms are based on, laser, interference, diffraction, light intensity recording and suitable illumination, which allow the light to bend in a certain way that it forms a live three dimensional shape. If enhanced and made more accessible holograms could be used for communication, as well as other leisure purposes such as television, movies, and stage performances. From a scale of one to ten, one being fiction and ten being fact holograms would score a nine for being used multiple times however lacking accessibility and needing a lot of equipment and machinery.
