With this book we expect to offer technological and knowledge services that we havein the University of Vigo to external companies and institutions of the aquaculture sectorin an easy and direct way and to make possible this knowledge transfer.

This offer has been listed in two different ways. The first one by the technological andknowledge offer, from basic knowledge of life systems in marine environment (e.g.organisms’ response to environmental variations, analysis of inter and intraspecificdynamics, research on the life cycles, taxonomy and evolution), measurement systemsand environmental quality control, design technologies for facilities, computer vision,automation and monitoring, information systems to business management. We alsoinclude here facilities and services available at the Marine Science Station of Toralla(ECIMAT) and the Center for Science and Technological Support to Research, centersbelonging to the University of Vigo.

The second part of this book is focused on presenting all the research groups workingin the University of Vigo related to Aquaculture.

I hope that this book will help to establish new ways of collaboration betweencompanies and our university.

Scientific and Technological Services of Marine Science Stationof Toralla (ECIMAT)

Research FacilitiesFacilities available to the research community are divided in individual facilities andcommon facilities. Individual facilities may be hired by an institution for a certain time;during this period its use is restricted to the hiring institution. Common facilities areavailable to all users of the research station.

Individual facilitiesConference roomA 67m2 conference room set up for seminars, conferences, meetings, etc. It has acapacity for 45 people and can be reserved. The room is equipped with the followingfeatures:

- Video/DVD projectors and high fidelity sound systems.- Conference table and presenter podium.

Research modules- A 60m2 temperature-conditioned laboratories to carry out pilot-scale experiments.These laboratories have a continuous supply of:

- Seawater:- Sand-filtered, room temperature seawater.- 20 micron filtration, 12ºC.- 20 micron filtration, 18ºC.

- Air- Oxygen- Carbon Dioxide- Dechlorinated fresh water- Electrical power supply

Constant temperature rooms- Bio-secured 9 m2 facilities to carry out pilot-scale experiments:

- Adjustable room temperature between 5-35±0.5 C recorded in a constant way,and remotely controlled code.

- Photoperiod Control.- 2 adjustable mobile shelves.- Seawater:

- Sand-filtered, room temperature seawater.- 20 micron filtration, 12ºC.- 20 micron filtration, 18ºC.


- Air- Oxygen.- Carbon Dioxide.- Dechlorinated fresh water.- Electrical power supply.- User-defined water quality and water outlet disinfection.

- Dry lab. This 53 m2 laboratory is set for the use of different types of microscopy equipmentavailable at the Center. There are eight work stations, six of which are only availablefor use of equipment, while the other two are reserved for temporary researchers orstaff.

- Sample laboratoryThis 67 m2 laboratory serves to receive field samples or to store or processthem. It also functions as a laboratory for courses and seminars for up to16 students. It contains the following equipment:

Diving room- 60 m2 for the support of scientific diving activities by ECIMAT's users. The divingroom offers the following services:

- Separate changing rooms for women and men- Individual lockers for diving gear.- Lockers for storage and drying of diving gear- Complete sets of diving gear- Verticus 5 air compressor, to fill tanks at 220 atm- Area to clean and dry diving gear

DockECIMAT has a floating dock with 60m length and 3m width connected through a fixedboardwalk with 60m length for the mooring of motorboats. The lowest depth at alow tide is only 1.2mOutboard motorboat

- Equipped with temperature-conditioned tanks for the transport of live marineorganisms.

- The boat has a 50 hp Yamaha outboard motor, model F50FETL/2008.The maximum number of people in the boat is six plus the driver, or in case of diving,four plus the driver, with a minimum of two divers and the drive.Pick-up TruckEquipped with temperature-conditioned tanks for the transport of live marine organismsby road.
