Scott Kelsey, managing principal of CO Architects, has focused his over 35-year architectural
career on medical and health sciences, research, teaching, healthcare and civic facilities across
the country. He is nationally recognized for his expertise in the New American Medical School,
where he has helped develop and implement new models for schools of medicine and health
sciences. Scott brings to his work a passion for imagining learning and research environments
that support new pedagogies, technologies and interdisciplinary engagement. He presents
at national forums such as Tradeline, the American Institute of Architects and the Society for
College & University Planning, and is on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the University of Oregon
School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Scott received a Bachelor of Architecture from the

Tom Chessum has devoted his over 30-year architectural career to healthcare, research
and higher education. Tom’s experience ranges from bench to bedside – from prestigious
biosciences projects such as The Salk Institute East Building to comprehensive healthcare
projects for Palomar Health, UC San Diego Health, Scripps Health and Kaiser Permanente in
Southern California. Tom speaks to, and writes for, national client and professional forums. His
projects have been published nationally and have garnered awards from Modern Healthcare,
Healthcare Design, and the American Institute of Architects. Tom joined the firm in 1986 as one
of its original members. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern

Jorge de la Cal has a diverse portfolio of design programs and institutional building types
spanning world-class restoration, retrofitting, and new construction. Jorge has over 30 years
of experience managing the design of large research facilities for UCLA and Texas Tech
University, educational facilities for the Los Angeles Unified School District, and civic facilities
such as the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He has nurtured an interest in
historic renovation throughout his 30-year architectural career, an interest that has led to such
prestigious modernization projects as UCLA’s landmark Royce Hall and the Natural History
Museum. He is a USGBC Accredited Professional, as well as a member of the Los Angeles
Conservancy and the Society for College and University Planning. Jorge received his Bachelor of
Architecture from the University of Southern California.

Jonathan Kanda has over 25 years of experience with new schools of medicine and health,
research facilities and academic buildings across the country. Since joining the firm in 2003,
Jonathan has led medical and health education projects in 17 states for institutions that are re-
envisioning their curricular and pedagogical approaches. He is a nationally recognized specialist
and frequent presenter on innovations in simulation and collaborative learning environments
for higher education and academic medical programs. Jonathan has served as a design studio
instructor at Boston Architectural College and for the UCLA Extension Interior Design program.
He holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture
from the University of California, Berkeley.

Jennifer Knudsen has managed large-scale academic, laboratory and healthcare projects
on university and healthcare campuses across the country. Her award-winning projects
demonstrate innovation in design, sustainability and project delivery – including early use of
BIM and integrated delivery, for which she has been nationally recognized. She has played
pivotal roles as project director and senior project manager for projects for the Universities
of California and Arizona, Arizona State University, Northern Kentucky University, Kaiser
Permanente and Palomar Health. Jenna was recognized with the AIA Young Architect Award
in 2011. Jenna joined the firm in 1998 after receiving her Bachelor of Architecture from the
University of Southern California. She returned in 2004 after earning her Master of Science in
Architecture and Urban Design at Columbia University.

Fabian Kremkus has worked nationally and internationally on academic and research facilities,
secondary schools, hospitals, and corporate headquarters, sports, and entertainment
facilities during his over-20-year architectural career. Since joining the firm in 1999, Fabian
has served as a senior designer for major museum, performing arts, research, healthcare,
higher education and justice facilities in Southern California and throughout the country. His
enthusiastic devotion to the profession of architecture and craft of building is unsurpassed,
and his approach to each project merges design sensitivity with great attention to detail and
craft. Fabian holds both a Master of Architecture and a Pre-diploma of Architecture from the
University of Braunschweig, Germany.

experience with research laboratory and undergraduate academic sciences projects across

manifest in more than 40 projects in six states. His leadership in embracing and implementing
Building Information Modeling for the firm’s projects beginning in 2003 led to early national
awards from the American Institute of Architects and AutoDesk. Tony holds a Bachelor of

management of complex projects with many constituents and diverse needs. He has directed
many significant California healthcare projects. Eyal joined the firm in 2001. He received his

environmental, economic, social and functional sustainable design a fundamental part of
projects. While previously associated with an architectural firm in London, Alex participated
in the design and preparation of the winning competition entry for the NATO Headquarters
Building in Brussels, and commercial projects in London and Manchester. Alex holds a Bachelor

Raymond Yang has provided design and technical services for complex academic, research
and healthcare projects in his 20 years of practice. Raymond has developed an effective
combination of planning, design, technical and construction administration skills on

Ed Martinez has served as construction administrator on institutional projects throughout
Southern California. They range from academic buildings with technology, complex
engineering and science buildings with a variety of laboratories, healthcare facilities with D&T
and research capabilities, and product research and testing facilities. Ed served as construction
administrator on all of CO Architects’ renovation and new construction projects at the Natural
History Museum of Los Angeles County, as well as for construction of the new LAUSD San
Pedro High School – Olguin Campus. He has over 30 years of experience – more than 20 with
