Scottish Borders Diversity Week is the first in the Borders, with NHS Borders and Scottish Borders Council Joint Health Improvement Team delighted to be co-ordinating the week-long programme of events. Working with partners from private, public and voluntary sectors, the week has been developed to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of our Borders town.

The week aims to focus on integration and empowerment encouraging local communities to come together as one to learn from each other and value the diversity that exists within the community.

What can you expect from Scottish Borders Diversity Week 2017?

This year’s programme is full of many interesting, fun and interactive events over the week across the Scottish Borders culminating in celebration on Saturday the 21st of October in Galashiels. We hope that whatever your interests are you can enjoy these events with your family, friends and colleagues.

With the arrival of warmer Spring weather, outdoor events start taking place such as The Mighty Deerstalker running event on Saturday 12 March, with 5 and 10 km runs with a difference at Traquair House, Melrose 7’s, and a traditional family sports day at Bowhill on Monday 2 May. Two weeks of the Tweedlove Festival in the Peebles areafeatures cycling events for all the familystarts on Saturday 14th May.

Festivals begin to pop up all over the Scottish Borders from the Hawick Reivers Festival 25 – 27 March, the Borders Science Festival at venues across the Borders in May and the Traquair Medieval Fayre on 28th May.

Alongside all these extra activities there is a full programme of music concerts, performances, and Puppet Animation Festival events in venues across the region.

Lots of enjoyable things to do during the spring months.

Walking Up an Appetite

15 October International Day will be kick starting Scottish Borders Diversity Week. In partnership this community led event will be packed full of family fun whilst celebrating culture and tradition from different countries. This free event will include international themed face painting, arts and crafts, healthy snacks as well as local services and community groups offering interactive activities. Multi Faith Cafe 4:30-6pm Langlee Community Centre Marigold Dr, Galashiels TD1 2LPAs part of Diversity Week, we invite you along for a cuppa and a chat giving the opportunity to have an informal chat around the differing beliefs and religions that make up our diverse communities. WALKING UP AN APPETITE- Peebles 10amEddleston Villiage HallHealth walk around Barony Castle taking in views of “The Great Polish Map”. 3-4 mile trail walk with established trail paths with snacks and drinks provided at Eddleston Village afterwards. Polish School Supper Night and Mirror of Stage performance 6:30pm Volunteer Hall, St John Street, Galashiels TD1 3JXAn evening celebrating our vibrant Polish community in the Scottish Borders, The Scottish Borders Polish School will be cooking up traditional Polish dishes whilst enjoying a performance by Mirror of Stage. Mirror of Stage are an intergenerational, bilingual theatre group, founded in 2013 in

Edinburgh. The main idea of it's founders and members is to cultivate Polish culture and language among Polish immigrants as well as to promote the Polish cultural heritage among British community. “Lilies” (aged 12+) is a performance based on popular Polish ballad by Adam Mickiewicz with the same title, kept in Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy style. The play presents us with a gallery of fantastic characters that bring their justice from the grave and poses question about the possibility of avoiding punishment… let us seduce you with a magic of romantic theatre of horror and dive into world of wonders. Lots of unforgettable thrills guaranteed!

Scottish Borders Saturday Polish School in Hawick provides classes of Polish language with elements of Polish history and geography to children aged 3-16. Borders College Open Day- Smash the Stigma Borders College, Galashiels Main Campus, Nether Road, Galashiels TD1 3HE‘Smash the Stigma’ is an event for Borders College students. We want to make sure students know it’s ok to speak about mental health issues and to raise awareness for the support available to them. The event also aims to encourage self-management techniques that students can use in their everyday life. This workshop will give opportunity to view a short film by Director Stu Maddux exploring the issue of aging in the LGBT community by speaking with six LGBT seniors about the growing trend of going back into the closet in order to avoid discrimination and mistreatment in their golden years. Meeting of Minds10-2pmBritish Legion Hall, High Street Coldstream TD124DH This event is aimed at raising awareness around the day to day issues surrounding parents with children that have complex needs. It is an opportunity to highlight hate crime and the importance of reporting. The event is an opportunity to meet with services that can provide support within the Borders.

“Meeting of Minds” is inviting everyone to come along and find out what a complex need diagnosis means for you and your child. It will also look at both the positive and negative

Reminiscence Scottish Night 4-6pm Burnfoot Hub, 89 Burnfoot Rd, Hawick TD9 8EJThis event is a chance to celebrate Scotland through reminiscence, music and dance. It is an opportunity to make friends, enjoy some traditional Scottish poetry, reflect and share stories. In true Scottish style a light dinner of stovies, tea and coffee will be provided for all to enjoy.

Reminisce about the good old school days and Hawick shops. 10am-12noonHawick Library , North Bridge Street, Hawick, TD9 9QTTake a nostalgic look at the Hawick of years-gone-by through objects, images and songs. Reminisce about the mills, Common-Ridings and High Street shops. Please note any dementia sufferers must be accompanied by a care worker and although the session is on for two hours participants do not have to stay for the full session.

This event will be a celebration of a successful week and an opportunity to find out what is happening in your local area.
