Re-defining the string orchestra

Page 2: Scottish Ensemble 2011-2012 Season Brochure

It gives me great pleasure to present Scottish Ensemble’s 2011/2012 Season.

Our quest for pushing boundaries, whether in Purcell or Ligeti, continues and we hope that you will be tempted to join us on our musical journeys.

There are plenty of highlights, including return visits from pianist, Alasdair Beatson and violist Lawrence Power, symphonies by Mozart & Haydn, and music from the Baltic nations. Our commitment to expanding our repertoire is reflected in new arrangements of music by Stravinsky and Debussy, and we are looking forward to a new work from the critically acclaimed young British composer Luke Bedford. The highly successful residency at Wigmore Hall continues with concerts in October and February.

In addition to our main season programme, we have an exciting range of special projects which include our first appearance at Kings Place in London, where composer John Woolrich is curating a series of concerts,

as well as the Scottish première of a brilliant new piece written by James Macmillan for Alison Balsom and Scottish Ensemble at Perth Concert Hall.

We always strive to make our concerts accessible and exciting artistic experiences for everyone. In these uncertain economic times, we have therefore taken the decision to open our doors as widely as possible, by making all tickets for our main season in Scotland only £10 for 11/12. So spread the word and bring your friends!

I do hope you can make it to these performances, and enjoy the Scottish Ensemble experience.

Our annual visit to the Highlands places Mahler’s arrangement of Schubert’s iconic quartet alongside works by Mozart and John Woolrich. The wide range of his talents is in evidence in this programme, with the Monteverdi-inspired Ulysses Awakes, as well as a violin concertino written for Scottish Ensemble, and a moving transcription of some beautiful songs by Hugo Wolf.

We are delighted to welcome back Perth-born Alasdair Beatson, to perform a concerto written by the 14 year-old Mendelssohn. At the other end of his life the composer wrote his opus 81, and we feature two of these late masterpieces, arranged for string orchestra. The unique melting pot of exquisite neo-classical sophistication and primeval rhythmic energy in Stravinsky’s music completes the other half of this concert.

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE WITH ROBERT MCDUFFIE

In a very special event, the Scottish Ensemble and renowned violinist Robert McDuffie perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Glass’s new violin concerto The American Seasons, which was inspired by Vivaldi’s masterpiece. Glass created this concerto especially for McDuffie, who gave its world première with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2009, and Jonathan Morton takes the solo in the Vivaldi to complement the Glass, proving that Minimalism started in the 1700s.

Lifelong learning is at the core of our activity, forming an integral part of the group’s identity. Exciting music projects of different sizes are created in conjunction with a wide range of partners. The focus of these projects is to bring the inspirational musicians of the Ensemble directly to participants in their local environment, nurturing musical skills while also encouraging development in other areas such as confidence, team-building, leadership and creativity.

During the 2011/12 Season we are planning a number of innovative lifelong learning opportunities.

Musical Hats - this large-scale project works in partnership with nursery schools introducing the instruments of the Ensemble through an adventurous story of music, travel and a multitude of colourful hats!

Music for Change - A quintet from the Ensemble will continue the successful and valuable work done at Polmont Young Offenders Institute in 2010 as part of the larger collaborative project, Inspiring Change. The musicians will be joined by talented DJ and composer, Alex Smoke, to develop participants’ recording and creative skills. Our work last season has been transforming for the young men involved and it is hoped to contribute to the prevention of repeat offending.

We will also integrate lifelong learning with the main season performances. Quicksilver will engage with secondary school age children, giving them the opportunity to gain greater access and in-depth knowledge of our concert programme, through a combined programme of workshops and concert attendance.

Pre and post concert conversations will continue throughout the Season. These conversations with musicians and soloists allow audiences to gain a greater understanding of and insight into the music performed.

We are also creating greater opportunities for audiences to experience a main season concert.

These include:

• Childrengofreewithapayingadult;

• FonicCardforGlasgowstudents

• Freeticketsforschoolgroupsand teachers (subject to availability).

If you want to know more about our lifelong learning activities, call Pippa Heath on: 0141 332 4747
