DESERT STAGES THEATRE SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA

PRODUCTION OF

WELCOMEWelcome to Desert Stages Theatre, and thank you for joining us at this performance of INTO THE WOODS!

The idea of producing a Sondheim musical, especially this one, can be daunting for any theatre. The lyrics are far from simple, and the rhythms and melodies are complicated. A number of addi-tional challenges came along with this particular production of this show, including a delayed start due to a positive case of COVID-19. These problems were no match for the INTO THE WOODS creative team, our DST staff, and this particular group of very talented and determined actors. As we got to know each other, we realized, as the characters in the story do, that we were “not alone.” Together, we overcame every obstacle in our path, and we have this incred-ibly artistic show as a result!

DST still has COVID-19 safety protocols in place to keep you, our actors, and our staff safe. In return, we ask that you kindly wear your mask the entire time you are in the theatre. If you wish to meet with your friends or cast members after the show, please arrange to do so in the food court area of the mall so the lobby doesn't get congested. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Thank you again for your support of live theatre and for your attendance at this production. Whether you are seeing your 100th show or your first at DST, you are a valued member of the Desert Stages Theatre community, and we appreciate you more than youcould ever know! Ellen Versen Walt VersenExecutive Director Artistic Director

DIRECTOR'S LETTERI believe today’s audiences love fantasy shows, and they have become accustomed to seeing the characters in a reality setting (ie: Once Upon a Time.) Therefore, the choice was made to make the setting for this show more reality based, instead of an old-fashioned storybook cut-out. It was also important to me to add the 2 elements that I believe can be lacking in some versions of this show: movement (when possible), and a more satisfying ending.

This telling of Into the Woods portrays characters that are based on old fairy tales, but the story is being told in the present time period by a modern young boy, which puts a new twist on the story. Did you know there were flashlights in the Renaissance Period? Well, there are in a young boy’s imagination!

It can be a challenge to rise to the task of directing/choreographing this 2.5 hour show in 8 weeks, and it would have been impossible without the talents and the immutable spirit of this amazing cast! I feel so blessed to have worked with them.

And finally, I would like to thank Ken Goodenberger for his willingness to take on the enormous challenge of music directing a Sondheim show performed to recorded tracks; Ellen for the opportunity to do a large cast musical especially after the events of this past year; and Ally for seldom saying no to my crazy ideas!

I truly hope you enjoy this show and find the wonderful Sondheim lyrics speak to your heart.

FALL CLASS SCHEDULE: Dancers Domain as a studio, was specifically created to build not only strong dancers but strong & healthy people. People that gain confidence through our training to ensure their successes as dancers, performers but most importantly as productive successful members of society. Our staff takes a personal interest in all of our dancers no matter how many classes they are signed up for. We strive on making a personal connection with everyone in order to ensure all of our dancers dreams are coming true. Whether it’s becoming a professional dancer, performer, or just someone who enjoys dance as a past time. EVERYONE of our students is important to us.
