On his first day in Spain, Scotty was visiting our school and our little children. He met a close friend called Sanvi who helped him to discover our school.

Sanvi showed Scotty the City Hall. Sanvi told him its construction started in 1892 at the initiative of the Lord Mayor of the City, Don Miguel Iscar. It is a very beautiful building in the centre of the town and it is surrounded by a big square, a place where people can find different activities along the year. At Christmas you can buy sweets and candies, at Easter you can buy chocolate eggs and in summer you can find concerts and shows.

First Cycle of Primary students made a bookmark for Scotty. Inside it they wrote the word “HELLO” in all the languages of the countries where Scotty has been in Europe and they dressed Scotty with a Spanish T-shirt. They had a really good time together.

Scotty learnt a lot of things thanks to Sanvi who was his guide. For example, he taught him that the Cathedral was dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Assumption Lady) and it is unfinished. It is a place for reunion and you can enjoy classical music concerts.

On the last day of September, Scotty and Sanvi went to the Castilla Canal. It is an engineering work begun in the mid 18th century and completed one century later. This project allowed people transporting cereals grown on the fields of Castile from one place to another. Today it is used as an irrigation channel and it also has a recreational function, in benefit of the visitors, day-trippers and hikers who come to enjoy all its cultural and natural attractions.

It is 207 kilometres long but Sanvi and Scotty only walked a part of it in the morning. At midday, they stopped to have lunch and play.

Scotty and Sanvi were in the Zorrilla Fountain. The main characteristic of this fountain is that it shows the time with water. Then they went to The Cavalry Academy, a museum where you can find banners, a collection of lead soldiers and a collection of arms (of the 16th century), trophies, photographs, horseshoes, saddles, etc.

6th October 2012

They went to San Pablo Church and they had a guided visit. This Dominican convent was founded by Doña Violante, wife of King Alfonso X, a very important king of Spain, called the Wise. When they finished their visit, they went in front of the church to the National Sculpture Museum where they found a range of sculptures quite interesting and unique in the world. Finally they had lunch in a typical restaurant close to the church. Scotty loves “tapas” and “jamón serrano”.

On Sunday, we decided to visit the 1st University in the town. Its front is beautiful. In the picture we are between two lions. With regards to lions, there is an amazing legend about them. If you are in exam and you count the lions’ number, you never finished your degree…It is only a legend but no student dare to count them! Then we went to Saint Gregorio church in which square we were playing. Finally, we went back home walking.

As it was a sunny day, Sanvi showed Scotty the biggest park in the city, called “Campo Grande”. It is situated in the centre of Valladolid. It’s got a triangular shape. It’s a brilliant example of the art of garden mosaics. One of the main features of the park is its vast population of poultry species. As a result, there are numerous turkeys, pheasants and pigeons, which in fact have become the park’s principal inhabitants. You can see us in among colourful leaves and in a little waterfall.

Today I really had fun...I enjoyed my first CACHAVA's day. And I guess you are wondering...what is it? Cachava's day is a special party in San Viator School. They celebrate Father Querbe's day. Everybody get really excited about it. It is a tradition like The Independence Day in the United States or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland. But this party is different from other parties I have been in. It seems to me that each and every student here loves sports. They spend the whole morning playing football, basketball, handball, running,...and much more. They make a kind of championship between classes. For example, 6 year students made 2 groups (team A and team B) and played ones against the others. They try to play well and not only the score counts. Referees take care of other things like fair play, cheer leaders exhibition, hand-made flags, etc. And what amazed me the most was the present for the winners. They got a huge (really huge) candy, believe or not it is almost a 5-year-old child size!!!!. They spend one month eating it. It was amazing...

It was great being there, it was such an experience for me. I promise I will come back next year. And I want to send a big hug to all my new friends. I will never forget my time in Spain. I hope to see you soon!

Hi! This is Scotty here!
