Scripture Afghan Block

In honor of the fall harvest season, we have selected this Basket Weave block, which you can use to crochet a cozy afghan for the cooler nights ahead. This pattern stitch is one of 24 blocks in our Scripture Afghan, a popular but out-of-print design that is now available again as a digital download from LeisureArtsLibrary.com. The original afghan uses two each of 24 blocks, but you could create an afghan using the Basket Weave pattern stitch alone. Make all 48 the same color, or crochet 12 each of four colors.

Basket Weave is one of 24 blocks from Scripture Afghan (Leisure Arts Library Item #800115). To purchase a digital download of the complete collection of pattern stitches inspired by the Bible, visit LeisureArtsLibrary.com.

BLOCKINGDue to the variety of pattern stitches used, some of the Squares may benefit from being blocked to the proper size. Place each Square on a clean terry towel over a flat surface and shape (each Square should measure 8" after edging is added); pin in place using rust-proof pins where needed. Steam lightly and allow to dry completely.

BACK LOOP ONLYWork only in loop(s) indicated by arrow (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1

POST STITCHWork around post of st indicated, inserting hook in direction of arrow (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2

WHIPSTITCHPlace two Squares with wrong sides together. Beginning in center sc of first corner, sew through both pieces once to secure the beginning of the seam, leaving an ample yarn end to weave in later. Working through inside loop of each stitch of both Squares, insert the needle from front to back through first stitch and pull yarn through (Fig. 3), H insert the needle from front to back through next stitch and pull yarn through; repeat from H across to center sc of next corner.

H — work instructions following H as many more times as indicated in addition to the first time.† to † — work all instructions from first † to second † as many times as specified.( ) — work enclosed instructions as many times as specified by the number immediately following or work all enclosed instructions in the stitch or space indicated or contains explanatory remarks.

GAUGECorrect gauge is essential for proper size. Each Square is designed to measure 7" before the edging is added. Hook size given in instructions is merely a guide and should never be used without first making a sample Square in the yarn and hook specified. Then measure it carefully. If your Square is smaller than specified, try again with a larger size hook; if larger, try again with a smaller size. Keep trying until you find the size that will give you the specified gauge. DO NOT HESITATE TO CHANGE HOOK SIZE TO OBTAIN CORRECT GAUGE.

MARKERSIn working the edging for each Square, it is necessary to work with “right side” facing. When instructed to place a marker to indicate the right side, loop a short piece of yarn around any stitch on the side facing before the work is turned.
