The Essence of Effortlessness...How do you convey your soul with an economy of brushwork and paint? To answer this question, Myrna York has been practicing sumi-e for over fifteen years. Sumi-e is the Japanese term for the ancient

Chinese art of ink painting. Historically, writing and art evolved together using brush and ink on paper. So close is the relationship, one can speak of writing a painting, or painting a poem. In both, the quality of the brushwork reigns supreme. Years of practice go into developing strokes that appear spontaneous and effortless, rather like the flight of a ballerina across a stage.

To master an art that requires such discipline, Myrna speaks of a daily routine that begins with painting her name repeatedly. From here, she might move to a poem. Then to one or more of the nature-inspired themes of this form that incorporate the basic brushstrokes—the bamboo symbolizing summer, the chrysanthemum: fall, the plum: winter, and the orchid: spring.

As we stand in Myrna’s studio, she shows me sketchbook after sketchbook, reams of paper covered with the same stroke—a bamboo leaf, or stalk, or the hoary roughness of the plum tree. How much pressure to apply and precisely when to raise the brush are key in this dance of muscle and will.

Even before Myrna puts brush to paper, she meditates. “Clearing the mind is very important and by that I mean no judgment. No expectation.” Buddhism and Daosim help her to understand the philosophy of acceptance. Only in releasing her inner critic was she able to cultivate the spontaneity required for the ability to “capture the chi in one stroke.” Sumi-e is not about realism, rather, the aim is to portray the essence or the chi of the subject through observation and study.

“It took me two or three years to understand the essence of the vermillion flycatcher,” Myrna says, as I admire the paintings in her online portfolio. (www.myrnayork.com) A dash of red, a stroke of black from the hand of a master—all it takes to create the excitement of a fleeting glimpse of this glittering bird.

Myrna incorporates the same discipline and attention to detail in everything she does, especially her service as editor of this newsletter. Joyce M. Jackson, who replaces Myrna, had this to say about her: “How do you encapsulate all that energy in one statement? I have never seen anyone give more to more people!” Though Myrna steps down as editor, she continues to serve. Whether gardening at the Presidio, teaching sumi-e, or writing, Myrna has captured the essence of what it is to belong to the Tubac community, and she does it with effortlessness and grace.

Myrna will be offering a workshop in color theory—Feb. 18, 2017. See the TCA website to register.

Gift a Brick!Lasting longer than flowers or a box of chocolate, give someone you love a brick for Valentines’ day. A message and/or name(s) are engraved on both large and

small size bricks to be permanently placed on the front plaza area of TCA. Contact TCA or stop by for the form to order a small ($100) or large ($150) brick.

There’s a sound to the voice that conjures up True Grit and a commitment of spirit worthy of Steel Magnolias. It’s no accident that Frances Causey, living and creating in Tubac, AZ, beckons us into the world of films. A former CNN journalist and current, award-winning, documentary filmmaker, Frances recently shared how the power of place influenced her early life. Being born and raised in Greenville, North Carolina shaped her drive to set the record straight for others whose voices had been unjustly silenced.

Frances grew up privileged (her word). She also grew up troubled by the lack of fairness she witnessed in her daily life. As a very small child, she sensed that something was not right. Good people, contributing equally to her community, were denied rights and respect simply because of their race, gender or socioeconomic class. This divide among people she loved fueled her childhood curiosity. It caused her to challenge her surrounding circumstances and ultimately, it formed her artistic purpose. She determined to surface truths and tell stories of inequity and injustice.

She became a journalist. Her CNN news team was honored with News and Documentary Emmys for coverage of the Olympic Park and Oklahoma City bombings. After 14 years as a CNN producer, Ms. Causey struck out to become an independent filmmaker. Finally, she would realize her childhood dream of creating significant stories of her own choosing. National recognition of her work multiplied.

Her short film titled Ours Is The Land, profiles the Tohona O’odham Nation and its fight to prevent an open-pit copper mine from desecrating ancestral lands. Last fall, her most recent work, The Long Shadow, won the coveted A& E Pitchfest. This film chronicles the history of slavery in the United States and demonstrates how it continues to influence race relations today. Her 2012 documentary, Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?” garnered a New York Times Critic’s Pick award and is now seen in more than 50 countries.

Ms. Causey’s name could seem to reference the many causes she pursues. But actually, her name is from Medieval Latin, calciata, meaning paved highway. That meaning seems more appropriate for Causey films. Frances paves a way for us to deeply examine significant events. She illuminates issues relevant to our times and then, as always with artistic work, what you walk away with is up to you.
