SAS Community News CIC HOURS of OPERATION Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. (second Saturday of the month) Community Information Center The school year is in full swing, and SAS outreach staff have been hosting classes for informative presentations at the Community Information Center. Presentations cover the history, engineering, and design of the project, and students have time to explore the center’s exhibits and attractions. Schedule a free presentation by phone/email at: Dennis. [email protected] or (646) 449-8700. With the project winding down, there are only a few months left to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Building the Second Avenue Subway One Balloon at a Time On Sunday, September 11th, MTACC’s Second Avenue Subway Outreach team participated in the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce’s Third Avenue Community Benefit Festival. The Second Avenue Subway Experience filled the northern half of Third Avenue between 77th and 78th Streets with informative and entertaining activities for adults and children alike. Attractions included a 50-foot “pop-up” R160 train car, which housed a Second Avenue Subway simulator - allowing festival goers to virtually “drive” the Second Avenue Subway the length of Phase 1; a stage featuring the Yaz Band (a participant in MTA Arts & Design’s Music Under New York program); a balloon station; an information tent; and several large-scale maps and images for visitors to photograph with friends and family. Director of Public Affairs, Joe O’Donnell, explains that the Q train will be a one-seat ride from Coney Island to the Upper East Side. The new 63rd Street/Lexington Av Station is a renovation of the existing line station constructed in the 1970s. When renovation is complete, riders will be able to transfer between the and . The remodled station will have four new entrances at the intersection of 63rd Street and Third Avenue. Entrance 1 will provide two new street-level escalators, Entrances 3 and 4 will provide new staircases, and Entrance 2 will have a street-level ADA accessible elevator. The station will also have four new elevators

from the mezzanine to platform levels.

Work to reconstruct the existing 63rd Street/Lexing-ton Av Station involves excavation for the construction of new entrance and ancillary buildings, removal and upgrade of the structural elements within the existing subway tunnel, and a traction power connection to the 57th/7th Street Station on the Line. This work is expected to be completed by December of 2016.
