Market Overview

The transportation sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed remarkable

progress in the past few years in line with Vision 2030. To maximize the Kingdom's position

as an exceptional and strategic geographical location, Vision 2030 aims to generate revenue

on its resources without having to rely on the country's budget.

According to the General Authority for Statistics (GaStat), the transport, storage and

communication sector (TSC) contributed 6.1% of the total GDP in 2019. Partnership with the

private sector plays an essential role in achieving this vision. The Saudi Landbridge project is

an exceptional example of a strategic partnership. Saudi Arabia is already in the initial

consulting and design stage with the private sector. The cost ranges between 13 and US$16

billion.

One of the most critical achievements lies in the Haramain high speed train project that was

built using the latest technology through a double electric line linking Makkah with Madinah

via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh, which has a total length of 450 km.

The train speed reaches 300 km per hour, the cost has exceeded US$16 billion.

According to the National Industry Development and Logistics Program ( NIDLP, 2018), Saudi

Arabia spent more than SR400bn ($106.6bn) on the transport and logistics sector,

developing infrastructure for new roads, ports, railways and airports. (Oxford business

Group)

Page 7: Second Edition Saudi Transport, Traffic and Logistic Services

7 |

Plans for this vision include enhancing connectivity between domestic, regional and

international developments of trade and transportation networks. The overarching goal is to

increase the export value of Saudi Arabia's annual exports to SR1trn ($266.6bn) by 2030 and

improve the Kingdom's strategic position at the crossroads of global trade routes. (Oxford

business Group)

Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic having an impact on the economy, as well as on the

transportation sector, long-term development plans are in place to improve infrastructure

that will support the growth and innovation in the Kingdom.

Upgrading the quality of services provided in Saudi cities is one of the most important goals

in line with Vision 2030. Raising the efficiency of urban roads and public transport,

developing transport management, parking services and applying technology in

infrastructure will raise the level of Saudi cities into smart cities.

The smart car parking market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reached about US$90 million

in 2018 and expects to grow at an annual growth rate of more than 19% to exceed US$263

million by 2024. Riyadh is set to be the largest source of demand for smart parking during

the forecast period due to the increasing need for traffic management and the increasing

tendency towards smart cities.

Transportation Sector

The Kingdom has a modern transportation network of public transport, roads, marine, air

and railroads, including 21 large, modern ports. The Saudi bus network provides affordable

transport both within and between the Kingdom’s cities. It consists of over 2,000 buses

carrying more than 3 million passengers annually within large urban centers such as Riyadh,

Jeddah, Dammam, Madinah, and Makkah. The rail network carries annually two million tons

of goods and half a million passengers.

The new public transit system provides advanced solutions for citizens making moving

around the city easier. Riyadh metro will be a driverless train equipped with cutting-edge

technologies and Wi-Fi, with 6 main lines covering 176 KM and 85 highly equipped stations.

Innovations and Trends

Smart City-Urban & Public Transport

Many initiatives have taken place in Saudi Arabia. The ministry of housing is seeking to

increase the national home-ownership rate by 60% in 2020 and 70% in 2030. In August

2017, 28,051 residential units were allocated. SAKANI project has been launched by the

Ministry of Housing and the Real Estate Development Fund aiming to allocate over 500,000

homes. More residential units have been built with sustainability in mind using modern

construction techniques.

Riyadh Metro is one of the largest construction projects taking place in Saudi Arabia with an

investment of $23 billion (SAR 86.3 billion). Consisting of 22-line network covering 1,200 km

across 6,765 stations in the city. The bus rapid transit system is equipped with double-

glazed, darkened side windows, circulating air blowers in the doors, and air conditioning in

addition to free Wi-Fi and a complete wheelchair access. Bus engines are powered by Euro 5

emissions standards with 290HP or 213kW outputs. The system will tightly integrate with

Riyadh Metro enabling citizens to travel quickly, cheaply, and safely across the city.

Train Station Equipment Facilities and Services

A lot of equipment is required at railway stations for the efficient working of the railway system. Passenger platforms are used to facilitate the movement of passengers and to help them entrain and detrain. Three types of cranes: fixed jib crane, mobile crane, and overhead gantry cranes are normally provided in goods sheds to the load and unload heavy or bulky materials such as logs from wagons and heavy machines. In addition to goods platform which is provided for the loading and unloading of parcels and goods onto and from wagons. According to the International Union of Railways (UIC), in 2010 the number of rail passengers increased by 3.5% worldwide. Along with the increase in high-speed rail (HSR), we need to rethink how stations need to operate and function in the future. Google Wallet is one of the most efficient technologies as the 'tap and pay' transactions can be made using near field communication (NFC) allowing fast wireless data transmission between the device and the ticket windows. Touch & Travel is a contactless interface technology that has a transfer rate of 424kbit/s at a frequency of 13.56MHz and has a range of up to 10cm where passengers can check in and check out via their phone and receive a billing statement at the end of the month.

Commercial Vehicles

According to Research and Markets, the Saudi Arabian commercial vehicles market forecast

to grow at a CAGR of 4.9% during the forecast period to reach $ 4.2 billion by 2024. Huge

demand for commercial vehicles is being generated by small and medium-sized enterprises.

Following Saudi Vision 2030 policy, the government will be focusing on the development of

tourism and the construction sectors will be anticipating fueling the demand for commercial

vehicles in the coming years.

Strategic partnerships in electric commercial vehicles, sharing of resources and expertise are

done to help enhance the product and multiply the results attracting popularity from

stakeholders and consumers, there by reducing costs, and increasing investment.

a. Self-driving vehicles

Technologies such as Wi-Fi, GPS, 5G, and Bluetooth have made the future of self-driving a

reality, as it is anticipated that such vehicles will be used all over the globe starting from

2020. Self-driving will be a crucial factor in lowering the number of accidents and maintain

safety. This concept is already applied in the Kingdom, to be more specific, it is applied in

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) campus.

b. Tracking devices

Page 13: Second Edition Saudi Transport, Traffic and Logistic Services

13 |

Implemented software are developed to allow apps and tools to meet the driver’s needs,

and in events of car accidents and emergencies by calling for help and offering coordinates

of locations.

Transportation potential opportunities

Bike-share concept

This smart and green technology has the potential to be incorporated in Saudi Arabia’s

development plans and strategies. Using bikes as a mode of transportation will improve the

air quality, the urban environment and may have health benefits, thus making it a

sustainable method of transport.

Flying taxis

Saudi Arabia is pursuing the goal of bringing flying taxis to the country transforming the

future of mobility. Improving daily life offering an affordable, fast, and environmentally

friendly with zero-emissions mobility.

Gulf Railway

A unified railway system that will connect the Gulf region by 2025. Aiming to transport

passengers, goods, and facilitating commercial movement between the GCC states, playing

a key factor in the integration projects between the countries.

Page 14: Second Edition Saudi Transport, Traffic and Logistic Services

14 |

Transportation Challenges

Saudi Arabia needs to focus on the re-designing and re-planning of its existing cities to help

absorb the pressure of the growing urban populations, as more than 75% of the total

population of Saudi Arabia lives in urban areas according to EcoMENA.

Traffic congestion and parking difficulties

Congestion is particularly linked with motor vehicles and the emissions from the vehicle,

which results in increasing the demand for transport infrastructures. There has been a

shortage of infrastructures supply when compared with the growth of mobility, as due to

the fact that vehicles spend the majority of the time parked. The motor vehicle has

increased the demand for parking space, which has created footprint problems.

Energy consumption

Pollution and noise generated by circulation, has become an obstacle to the health and the

quality of life of urban populations. Therefore, energy consumption by urban transportation

has dramatically increased. A transition to more sustainable and efficient forms of urban

transportation is much needed.

Adopting technology tools

Many firms are still hesitating to adopt new technologies. Digital technology innovation is

certain to convert the trends of procurement and supply chain in the future. A slow

adoption of technologies may give other competitive well digitally equipped companies an

advantage.

Page 15: Second Edition Saudi Transport, Traffic and Logistic Services

15 |

Parking Sector

Global urbanization linked with increasing volume of vehicles, sees the parking sector

undergoing tremendous change. Today, 50% of people live in cities and it is estimated that

this number will increase to 70% by 2050. Cities are becoming highly trafficked with cars,

and parking spaces are barely fitting the users. That is why it is important to come up with

new solutions to accommodate more vehicles more efficiently and effectively.

Innovation and Trends

Ticketing & payment systems

Parking ticketing systems are the systems that are used in public parking areas. The parking lot would require a fee to be used by any person, mostly charged by hour. These systems are used for the purpose of traffic control and parking management in the area. It also contributes in data analysis of the area’s traffic by identifying the busiest hours and helps in monitoring and controlling it. The machines are easy to use for the end user, when the ticket is issued, the user has to pay for the parking lot to avoid trailing the car. There are new technologies that have been developed to make ticket payment easier:

• Pay by Plate payment method for parking

The technology allows drivers to pay for parking spaces by simply punching their

license plate number into a parking kiosk, then paying by credit card or cash. They

can reserve the space for as long as they want upfront and if they need to renew,

they can do this remotely by app.

• Pay by phone

This is a type of parking operation that enables a customer to pay using a cell phone

or mobile application.

• Entry terminal

The terminal is equipped with a bar code printer for the dispensing of parking cards.

The Royal Commission for Yanbu in Saudi Arabia is a leader in the implementation of cutting-edge technologies and is being transformed into a smart city in the kingdom. One of the smart cities’ transformation goals is to reduce truck traffic, and that is achieved by specifying a truck parking area in the suburbs. Parking information services

Parking information services are designed to help the drivers and optimize the parking services. This type of information helps in reducing the traffic congestion and makes the parking experience faster and easier. New trends and innovations have arisen that are concerned with parking information services:

• Smart Parking: is a parking solution that can include in-ground Smart Parking sensors, cameras or counting sensors. These devices are usually embedded into parking spots or positioned next to them to detect whether parking bays are free or occupied.

Page 16: Second Edition Saudi Transport, Traffic and Logistic Services

16 |

• Smart Navigation apps are applications that share real-time data of your travel with you. By doing this, Smart Navigation apps calculate the quickest route towards your desired location.

• Automated valet parking: robots Passengers book a parking space on the airport website and then drop their vehicles off in a dedicated cabin. The valet robot then picks up the vehicle and parks it in a secure parking lot. By eliminating the need for spaces between cars that is necessary with human parking, the robot can more efficiently manage parking spaces.

• Wireless charging on parking spots the charging solutions, usually referred to as wireless level 2 charging, utilize 240-volt outlets that can be placed anywhere. The outlet is connected to a charging pad that sits beneath the vehicle and once in place, the vehicle charges itself. This is essential due to the ever-increasing rise in electric vehicles, hybrid or otherwise. Unlike conventional vehicles that use a gasoline or diesel-powered engine, electric cars and trucks use an electric motor powered from batteries or fuel cells. Wireless charging will only get more popular.

Parking reports & statistics

Saudi Arabia is known for having 5 main services that are mostly needed for pilgrims, which are: transport, shipping, mail, logistics and logistics. The Kingdom has deployed 38,750 employees, working in seven specialized sectors to provide air and land transport, mail, shipping, and logistics services. In 2018, the smart parking market reached around $ 90 million in Saudi Arabia, and it is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 19% to gross $ 263 million by 2024. After the decision of allowing women to drive in 2018, the number of drivers in Saudi Arabia has reached 2.9 million in 2020.

Challenges and opportunities in the Parking sector

Cities must turn into gentle, smart, and efficient places and evolve to become Smart Cities. Regarding mobility it should imply: – Improve infrastructures and public transport flow. – Availability of dynamic systems to guide the traffic towards its final destination, the parking. – Promote the use of autonomous, connected, electric, smart and non-polluting vehicles to reduce traffic, noise, and pollution. – Get a more effective and ecological parking that allows the driver to find the free parking space quickly, safely and with the minimal energetic consumption. Web Access: We cannot always be sure that Wi-Fi is available wherever we go. The absence of freely available Wi-Fi poses several car parking barriers. Generational Gaps: If older people who are not technologically savvy don’t understand a

new parking system, the establishment will lose out on a massive demographic.

Space Utilisation: Advanced parking methods always require space. The utilisation of this space is one of the largest challenges facing parking technology. Cost: New technology is an expensive challenge. While the purveyors of this technology desperately want it launched, getting to that point requires investment and planning.
