People would gather in fields and under arbors and stay for a week or more to hear the preachers and evangelists of the day preach and share the story of Jesus and His love. Morrison Campground is a 150-year-old example of such a gathering place in our community. (This year it meets July 10-19.) Each summer as Morrison Campground celebrates the Methodist tradition of Camp Meetings, we celebrate an indoor, air-conditioned version on summer Sunday mornings at Second Avenue with our own “Camp Meeting”-style worship. Our theme for worship on Sundays, July 12 through August 16, is “I Love to Tell the Story.” We look forward to experiencing and sharing the depth of our faith in story and song. Telling stories to the children at Vacation Bible School reminds me how powerful the simple joy of hearing Bible stories is to deepening and reviving our faith. So this summer, we will hear a different Bible story each week and consider why it is fundamental to our faith and essential for our daily life in the world today. Of course, as good Methodists, we will also sing the story with favorite hymns and special music. What is your favorite story from the Bible? What story do you remember hearing as a child? “I Love to Tell the Story”

In the days when travel was more difficult, and small, scattered communities shared one preacher who traveled or “itinerated” among them, we Methodists developed a summertime revival tradition.

A WORD FROM REV. BETH

I’ve been in Chicago the last two weeks taking my final class at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. I have missed you, but it’s been nice to be in another part of the country where even the hottest day feels like a beautiful, cool fall day in Rome. It’s a joy to spend a few days here with my sister before she returns home to Atlanta this month and to enjoy times running along Lake Michigan pretending I am at the beach.

Another great thing about these two weeks has been studying and collaborating with clergy colleagues on the subject of Evangelism. Yes, that “E word” that causes a shudder of discomfort or even disdain when we hear it and remember experiences of evangelism done poorly and ineffectively. My colleagues and I have committed to help our church do evangelism better, to get out of our “comfort zone,” and practice evangelism as a spiritual dis-cipline that undergirds who we are as disciples of Jesus Christ. Evangelism is about our relationship with God, our relationship with one another within the church, and our relationship with others outside the church. Evan-gelism is about love.

The Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston is such an evangelistic community. They worship together, pray to-gether, and sing the hymns of faith together, all the while being nurtured and shaped in love. We know that now because a diverse group of people were gathered together in love around the scripture on the evening of June 17. And in the days that followed the horror of that night, that community has borne witness to the world of what it means to live and love as a disciple of Jesus Christ. When people saw that witness, flags came down, and people began to think differently about their relationships with one another. Evangelism is about the power of love like that.

Last Friday the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that all states must allow same gender marriage. There continues to be a wide range of response to that decision both in the culture outside the church as well as among faithful Bible-believing people who love Jesus with all their heart. The Supreme Court’s decision does not change our United Methodist Church policy that same gender marriage services may not be conducted in our churches, and United Methodist ordained clergy may not conduct such services anywhere. That policy will be reviewed at the United Methodist Church’s General Conference in 2016. No one knows whether the policy will change. Re-gardless, faithful disciples of Jesus Christ will continue to disagree. God's people have always disagreed about various issues.

But, also regardless, we remain in relationship with one another. Just as Emmanuel AME Church, our doors are open to all. We practice the radical hospitality of worshiping together, praying together, studying scripture to-gether, singing the hymns of faith together, all the while being nurtured and shaped in love for God and one an-other. Evangelism is about the power of love to draw all people to Jesus Christ.

Let us bear witness to the love of God in this world, so that those to whom love is a stranger will find in us generous friends.

Blessings,

North GA Conference Lay Delegate Report 2015

The 149th Session of the North Georgia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church

officially commenced with Opening Worship in the Grand Hall of the Athens Classic Center on

Tuesday, June 16. Theme: We Are God's People Connected: A Focus on Global Health.

Presiding Bishop B. Michael Watson introduced our preacher and other special guests, including Bishop Woodie White, Bishop Alfred L. Norris, and Bishop Warren Brown. Bishop Brown brought warm greetings on behalf of our Pan Methodist family and The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Bishop Deborah Wallace-Padgett of the North Alabama Annual Conference preached a gentle message, encouraging us to continue to be “The Good Soil” based on the scripture reading from Matthew 13: 1-9. "You are what I call ‘good soil,'” she said, comparing ministry to the act of gardening. Worship concluded with a service of Holy Communion. Bishop Watson’s benediction called us to action: “You’re good soil. Get out there and produce good fruit, abundant fruit. Amen.” At the evening Service of Licensing, Commissioning and Ordination, the Conference commissioned thirteen provisional members (one as a courtesy commissioning for the Texas Annual Conference), four full connection deacons, and twenty full connection elders. The agenda for the week included: thirty-six committee reports, voting for lay and clergy delegates to general and jurisdictional conferences, hearing and voting on resolutions, and several special services.

Points of Special Interest

Under conference finance & administration: there will be a 4.4% decrease in the budget this year. This is primarily due to the sale of Simpsonwood. Our apportionments will be lower also as a result. The Bishop’s special offering this year was for the Imagine No Malaria Campaign. The goal is $75 million, and we are getting close. One person in Africa dies every 60 seconds from this preventable disease. Changes in health insurance for ministers were explained. Notable resolutions were to petition General Conference to change wording in the Book of Discipline about homosexual and/or transgendered people being able to be candidates, ordained ministers or appointed to serve in the UMC. These and another resolution to petition for elimination of discriminatory language concerning same sex marriage in the Book of Discipline were all voted down. All business of the conference is available to you on the website: www.NGUMC.org. Thank you again for trusting this responsibility to me. I am proud to represent the congregation of Second Avenue UMC and I’m happy to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

I would like to thank each member of my Second Avenue family for all the kind and thoughtful expressions of sympathy toward my family and me.
