Each Session committee and the board of Trustees have been asked to work on some 200 th Anniversary goals for our church to pursue in 2015 and beyond. For example, the Worship and Music Committee is planning to present period music in worship from each of the four 50 year celebration segments. Other potential plans include the placement of an historical marker in front of our church through the Kentucky Historical Society and the commissioning of a special anthem to be written for the anniversary. Anniversary Planning Team composed of Harvie Wilkinson, Laura Gardner, Scott Walz, Helen Evans, Phil Maxson and Susan Harper has been at work in preparation for our 2015 celebration as a church. More people are being added to this team as plans develop. To date here is the direction our celebration will take.

We have divided the two centuries of Second Church’s life into four 50-year segments.

1. 1815-1865 Foundation which focuses early history and influential members including the Lincoln, Todd, Breckinridge connections with speakers: Abraham Lincoln (Jim Getty of Gettysburg, PA) and possibly Mary Todd Lincoln (Trish Clark). This focus will be in September, 2015

2. 1865-1915 Education which focuses on the rise of our Sunday school and our choir as well as our UK connections with faculty members (2015 is UK’s 175th anniversary) with preacher: David Renwick as the Pace Warren Speaker on October 11, 2015

3. 1915-1965 Transition which focuses on the church’s move to its present location after the fire that burned the Market Street church and the Lexington community’s move beyond racial segregation with Second’s involvement in Civil Rights Movement. Possible preacher: A Black Pastor involved in Civil Rights in Lexington in the 1960s. This focus will be in November, 2015

(Nothing specific in December 2015 due to busyness of Advent season)

4. 1965-2015 Mission which focuses on Second’s mission support and involvement in Lexington, in KY and around the world. Ron Byars will preach on January 17, 2016. We intentionally are moving the mission focus into 2016 to make it forward looking and going beyond our anniversary celebration.

Each Session committee and the board of Trustees have been asked to work on some 200th Anniversary goals for our church to pursue in 2015 and beyond. For example, the Worship and Music Committee is planning to present period music in worship from each of the four 50 year celebration segments. Other potential plans include the placement of an historical marker in front of our church through the Kentucky Historical Society and the commissioning of a special anthem to be written for the anniversary.

MEMBER NEWS Sympathy to Jean Becker on the sudden death of her son, Steve. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 3 at 11:00 a.m., at Second Church.

Sympathy to Priscilla Conyers on the death of her aunt, Ruth Hanks, on April 14.

Congratulations to Will and Lindsay Milward on the birth of son Gregory “Austin”, born March 28.

Member Eliza Waller, a junior at Lexington Catholic High School, created a video for the “Go Make Some Noise” video contest created by the organization, Catholic Extension. She was one of the top six winners in the country. She will receive a $1,000 grant for her ministry (the LCHS Service Club that she founded) and Pope Francis will watch her video! She submitted a video about the Service Club’s recent DanceBlue event, a dance marathon fundraiser held January 17 in the Lexington Catholic Alumni Gym. Dancers raised $68,606.36 for the UK Pediatric DanceBlue Hematology Oncology Clinic, doubling last year's total. View her video at http://extensionday.org/.

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT

Discretions will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Proverbs 2:11

From Safe Kids Fayette County: Unintentional falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries to children.

In 2012, 3 million children were seen in emergency departments

because of falls, and nearly half of fall injuries are among children 4 and under. Fall prevention tips include:

• Install window guards and stops. Move chairs, cribs, and other furniture away from windows.

• Secure children when seated. Place infant carriers on the floor, not on a table top.

• Play on soft surfaces at playgrounds.

• Be smart: Protect your head and your child’s head by wearing a helmet when biking.

• When shopping, never leave a child unattended in a cart and use the safety belt provided.

• Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.

• Secure TV’s and furniture to the wall to prevent tip-

overs.

The 2014 Bread for the World Offering of Letters campaign will urge our members of Congress strengthen our international food-aid programs in the following ways:

♦ To improve efficiency by allowing more food purchases in or near the country where it is needed and reducing sales of American-grown food in developing countries to fund projects. These changes will promote long-term food security by directly supporting local farmers’ efforts to improve their lives.

♦ To enhance the nutritional quality of food aid and better target it to vulnerable populations such as women and young children.

♦ Protect funding for emergency and development food aid.

We will have sample letters available on May 4 and May 11 so you can write your letter in the Gathering Room. The sample letter will also be on the church website. Research shows that letters are more effective than an email because Congressional staffers do log each letter. Here is your opportunity to show compassion for hungry people by making food-aid programs work better!

JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS As people of faith, God requires us to Do Justice and redeem fallen systems. Over 1,640 people from the 25 BUILD congregations, present at the Nehemiah Action, April 8, heard our city leaders give the citizens of Lexington victory in three ways. Justice was won with:

PAYDAY LENDING---Senator Alice Forgy-Kerr committed to BUILD to sponsor legislation in the 2015 session to end abusive payday lending practices in KY. CRIME & DRUGS--With 80% of crimes in Lex. drug related, D. Sanders agreed to provide training for judges and attorneys to ensure they understand the benefits of Drug Court. If the current 40 empty slots are filled, Lex. will save over $500,000 each year while giving people the opportunity to address their addiction in a productive way. AFFORDABLE HOUSING TRUST FUND--After 6 years of diligent work, Mayor Gray did commit with "YES" to all four 'asks' which included, "By July 1st, 2014, will you dedicate a minimum of $2 million of annual revenue for the creation of the AHTF?" Now, BUILD will support our mayor as he leads his council members to secure the final 1-2 votes needed to establish an ongoing funding source. We will follow up with the outcome of his commitments.

There were 79 representatives present from our church. Second’s Justice Ministry Team appreciates everyone who answered God's call to do justice at the Nehemiah Action. Your powerful presence was vital in the hard work to help make our city as close to God's Kingdom here on earth as possible. Thank You!

Meals on Wheels is a unique, humanitarian program inspired by the desire to help solve the problems of elderly and handicapped people. Many people are able to live more

independently in their homes with just a little outside help such as nourishing food from Meals on Wheels. Each day’s delivery includes:

• A hot meal to be eaten immediately upon its arrival • A bag of cold foods – a sandwich, cereal, salads,

desserts, juices, and milk - to be refrigerated until eaten for supper and breakfast

• A brief friendly visit from a volunteer

Volunteers pack and deliver the meals between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm each day. For more information regarding cost or if you know someone who would like to receive meals, volunteer to pack or deliver meals, call the central office for Meals on Wheels of Lexington (859-276-

5391) weekday mornings.
