Dear Friends,

As many of you know this will be my last Second Sharing article as the Pastor Nominating Committee has extended a call and it has been accepted. The congregation will meet on December 9 following the 11:00 worship service to hear and act on a report from the PNC. The past 18 months have been very special ones for Leslie and me. We have truly loved our time here and you have welcomed us with such wonderful hospitality.

You are a faith community with such a bright future; you have a heart for mission, you are welcoming to visitors, and you have a wonderful staff who are always wanting what is best for 2Pres. You have wonderful lay leadership on the Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees, and the Session. The next Senior Pastor will be blessed by you and you will be blessed by his/her ministry among you.

My last day here at 2Pres will be Christmas Eve. It will be a privilege to be here throughout the Advent season and bring the congregation through Christmas as we worship the new born King. In the meantime, I have some leads on churches elsewhere and I look forward to meeting new folks in a new church, wherever God will lead Leslie and me.

I want to thank the Interim Pastor Nominating Committee (Mike Garrett, chair, Martha Renfroe, Alyse Roberts, Rachel Gilbert and Tom Barker) for their confidence in my leadership to offer the position to me. I will be forever grateful to them.

A huge thank you goes to the staff of 2Pres for welcoming me with open arms. They are truly a gift from God. Above all, I want to thank each of you for your hospitality and allowing Leslie and me to do ministry among you. May God grant you all of God’s best. Blessings, Tom

BLANKETS OF HOPE As the temperatures turn colder, many of us will take the warmth of our homes for granted. The streets of Lexington are filled with those who don’t have that luxuryIthose who can’t get to a shelter or who won’t go to a shelter for one reason or another. With your

assistance, Blankets of Hope can give hope and warmth to those who need it. Blankets, new and old, (but clean) are desperately needed! If you have extra blankets, coats, gloves or hats, please consider donating them to Blankets of Hope. All items will be delivered to the Hope Center where they will be distributed by the Hope Mobile staff. In the Mission Closet in the Gathering Room, there is a marked bin for any donations. If you would like to purchase a new blanket in honor/memory of a loved one, blankets are $6 (twin); $10 (full/queen). Checks should be made payable to Second Presbyterian Church and a notation made on the check that it is for Blankets of Hope. Acknowledgement cards are available. If you’d like to help, please email Kirsten Kramer Carey ([email protected]) for information regarding donations . . . any help is greatly appreciated!

Isaiah 46:4

Holiday season always sends our thoughts to families and time together. For an ever growing number of people family is not near by. Given our increasingly mobile society that means many find themselves in the long distance care giving mode. This role often creates stress, anxiety, and sometimes guilt about not being closer. Research in this area suggests some ways to help decrease the negative effects:

• Don't neglect your own well being. This is a prerequisite to providing sustained, effective care and prevent burnout.

• Check in regularly. Not only keeping in contact with on site caregivers, but also with the person who is ill. This may help to prevent crisis.

• Divide and conquer. If the tasks of caregiving are shared with other family members assigned tasks-like scheduling- help to keep everyone on track.

• Stay connected. Coordinating schedules can be made easier with apps like Google calendar, CareZone and CaringBridge.

• Ask for help when you need it and be realistic about your responsibilities.

Caregiving, when thought of as a choice not an obligation or duty, can be a chance to increase connection with your loved one and make this season of your life more positive. Jackie Graves, Parish Nurse

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT

Thank you for your faithful giving throughout the year. We want to bring you up to date on Second Church’s finances.

As of the end of October, our contributions received are 68.30% of our yearly goal. Since we should be at 83.3%, we are roughly 15% behind. With the year coming to a close, we need to cover our deficit so that we can meet our commitments to missions and our operating expenses.

If you are able to fulfill your 2018 pledge please do so before the end of December. All contributions to the church need to postmark by December 31

st, 2018 in

order to be credited toward your 2018 tax statement. Stock or charitable contributions from your IRA can be accepted as donations or given toward your pledge.

If you are planning on using appreciated assets as a means of donating to the church, please contact Scarlet Hall, our Director of Finance, ([email protected] or 254-7768) or if you have any questions about making a donation to the church.

SECOND SHARING . . . Justice Ministry News, Meet Our Missionaries, Brunch and Bellinis Update PAGE 5

Brunch and Bellinis, Second Church's annual benefit brunch and auction for Buckhorn Children and Family Services, was a huge success! In our largest event to date - this is the FOURTH ANNUAL - approximately 120 people attended and several thousand dollars was raised for the charity that provides residential treatment for youth with disabilities and those suffering from neglect and abuse. Buckhorn has been a mission of Second Church for many years. The Second organizing committee reached out to other Presbyterian Churches in central Kentucky and members of several churches were well represented. Special thanks to: Brian Behr for the beautiful piano prelude; Sally Scherer for serving as mistress of ceremonies; Katie Copeland for performing several Broadway hits accompanied by pianist Linda Crawford; Carol Behr who organized our silent auction with a stunning variety of items to take home or to purchase for Buckhorn youth.

During the luncheon Buckhorn CEO Ricky Creech addressed the crowd about the mission and vision of Buckhorn. He recognized two entrepreneurs - Isobel Chewning of The Cotton Patch, and Selma Owens of Liberty Road Cafe and Catering - for their extraordinary gifts to Buckhorn of a portion of the sales proceeds from their businesses. Join us next year, won't you?

BRUNCH AND BELLINIS UPDATE

MEET OUR MISSION CO-WORKERS

Did you know Jeremy and Luta Garbart-Welch are our mission co-workers in Malawi. Their November newsletter speaks to the importance of a physical church in building and sustaining a Christian community. With the only church many kilometers distant, five Christians met, talked about their gifts and resources, and, with others, molded and burned bricks to build a church structure. From those five Christians there are now 112 church members and the church is an official prayer point for the Emusa congregation. The church, which can hold 250 people, was built and roofed with local resources and without outside donations.

Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 1 John 3:18

31 of 2nd's 50 Justice Ministry Network Members (JMNM) were among the nearly 500 present at the Community Problems Assembly held at Consolidated Baptist Nov. 5th. Education/Youth was voted as the most urgent problem BUILD will research and take Action this year. Stories heard during BUILD's recent House Meetings regarding this community problem included: failing neighborhood schools, unequal access to resources, student achievement, school safety, student discipline, early childhood education opportunities. JMNM's will narrow down the specific problem area at our Research Kickoff. 2nd church will host BUILD's Research to Action Kick-off Monday, December 10th, 6:30 PM. All Justice Ministry Network Members interested with participating in this vital process are strongly encouraged to attend. Do come to learn what occurs during the 4 month research process; how BUILD does it's 'homework'. All committed JMNM's are invited to work on a research team on whatever specific day(s) and time(s) that works best to serve. Rest assured, your presence will not obligate you to do so. Current status with Drug/Opioid Crisis campaign will be reported at our Kick-off. Good News! After a four year, arduous STOP the Violence campaign, Mayor Gray and other city leaders completed the final step to enter into a contract with the National Network for Safe Communities with a double reading of resolution 1187-18 at the November 16th Council Meeting. We celebrated a unanimous vote YES by council members! This contract is a critical first step in saving lives. This detailed problem analysis, which begins January 2019 will give our city leaders the best information and strategies from the national experts regarding group related violent crime in Fayette County. God expects us to Do Justice: to do everything in our power to bring as much of heaven to earth as possible. Interested in learning more about 2nd's Justice Ministry Mission? Fredda and Bill Moody, Jim Drahovzal, Judy Maxson and Rev. David welcome your inquiries.
