QUO VADIS DAYS

QVD is a five-day vocations discernment camp (June 10-14) for young men ages 15-19 at Belmont Abbey College. The camp includes talks by local priests, seminarians, and others on the vocations to the priesthood, marriage, and fatherhood. It has become enormously successful and will fill up quickly. The goal of our Quo Vadis Days is to challenge young men to ask the fundamental question “quo vadis” or “where are you going?”, while equipping them with the tools and opportunity to discern God’s will for their life. The event attempts to strike an effective balance between the activity of a summer camp and the quiet of a retreat. The day is structured to include Holy Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharistic Adoration, time for personal reflection, and interaction with priests and seminarians. The $150 cost includes lodging at Belmont Abbey College, all meals, and supplies. For more information, contact Fr. Kottar.

SECURITY UPGRADES

The security upgrades at SM and CK are completed. The enhancements include: 24 hour surveillance video cameras, new alarm system, and monitored entrance access to the office. Thank you for you generosity to the collection so all these important security measures could be completed. Additional upgrades will take place as we continue our evaluations. As always, inform an usher, Deacon James, or Fr. Kottar if you see suspicious activity or persons in the church or parking lot.

NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL

For anyone interested to help financially with the effort to rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. has set up a fund. All proceeds will be used solely for this cause. Contributions may be made by debit or credit card at SupportNotreDame.org. You may also call Basilica for information on how to mail a check.

FROM THE PASTOR

Just in time for Good Friday, our new 14 Stations of the Cross arrived and were installed. They were hand carved and finished in Hungary out of olive wood. Each station is framed with turned columns with finials. Each Station is hand finished using warm, soft shades of tinting. They will add beauty to the church for hopefully many generations. The new Stations were made possible by parishioners’ financial generosity in the Sunday collection over the years. Thank you!

On this Friday, May 3rd, the Church commemorates the finding of the True Cross by the Empress Helena. According to mexconntect.com, “On the hill called Calvary or Golgotha, the site of Christ’s death, Helena and the Bishop of Jerusalem, St. Macarius, were preparing to build the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. A local Jew named Judas (St. Judas Cyriacus) suggested that three centuries of debris that had accumulated over the hill and the caves be removed. Helena ordered the excavation, convinced that the temple to Venus and Jupiter constructed in 135 A.D. by Emperor Hadrian had been built largely to divert Christians from their pilgrimages and from their searches for the tomb of Jesus. Judas believed that they would find the cross near the cave where the body of Jesus had been laid, based on the custom of burying the weapons of execution with the victim. During the excavation, the remains of three crosses were found in a cave, along with the nails used to crucify Jesus and the placard from the cross of Jesus, declaring him “King of the Jews.” To determine which was the cross of Jesus, a prominent local woman dying of leprosy was brought, and allowed to touch each of the three crosses on succeeding days. When the woman’s lesions were instantly cleared, they knew which was the True Cross.”

In Mexico, May 3rd is a national holiday that goes all the way back to colonial days when construction workers, mainly masons, were honored. Today it includes all construction workers. Two days after Labor Day (May 1st) is ‘Día de la Santa Cruz’. According to a writer on sanoranresorts.mx, “When it falls during the week, this holiday is recognized by project managers who host a special luncheon for their workers and hang a decorated cross at the highest reachable point on the edifice being built. Spanish conquistadors brought the tradition from their home country where a church could not be blessed unless it contained a cross. Friars would fashion the first cross in a new mission out of flowers to expedite the blessing. Over the centuries, on this Día de la Santa Cruz, residential neighborhoods began adorning their homes with crosses decorated with flowers and lace. Partly as a result, neighborhoods (barrios) began to gather in the evening to celebrate their workers no matter what line of work, beginning with a Mass, then food, music and colorful decorations.”

The 14 Stations of the Cross will be solemnly blessed THIS FRIDAY, May 3, at 7pm at our first-ever Holy Cross Mass here at St. Mary. You are invited to bring any crosses from home to the church that evening so that they may also be blessed at this Mass.

— Fr. Kottar
