The sounds of Afro-Cubansoul hit the Spoleto FestivalUSA 2017 stage last Saturdaynight with the appearance ofthe Pedrito Martinez Group. This dynamic quartet broughttraditional and soulful rhythms, mixed with other musical vibra-tions, to the Spoleto audiencewith a soulful exuberance thathasn't been seen nor heard for awhile here in the Lowcountry.
This band is an embodimentof respect for the original Afro-Cuban folkloric flavor that wasevident in the earlier sounds ofpast Cuban greats likeFrancesca Aquabella, Carlos"Patato" Valdez, Luis Conteand one of my personal fa-vorites, the late great MongoSantamaria. Pedrito Martinez,as leader of this entourage, is awonderful and tremendouslyskilled percussionist who's def-initely carrying on the legacy es-tablished by thoseaforementioned musical greatsand others from Cuba.
Mr. Martinez and fellow bandmates are excitement personi-fied. Backed by the dynamicEdgar Pantoja-Aleman on key-boards, percussionist JhairSala, and bassist Yunior Terry,Pedrito Martinez, a dynamicsinger in his own right, began toshow early on in the concert Iobserved on May 27, 2017, at theCollege of Charleston's Cisternthat they came to have pure fun.
To say that explosive musicalenergy was on display in thehouse on that night was likecalling a hurricane an earth-quake. This group thumps, rocks and grooves like very fewLatin based groups can.
Using the influences of timba, guaguanco, jazz, gospel and theblues, all meshed together in anintense collaboration of Afro-Latin funk, the band was ingroove mode from the very startof the concert. As a straightfor-ward cultural critic, I have togive special props to the key-boardist Panto-Aleman becausethis dude is "baaad" in his ownpersonage, sounding a lot likeearly Herbie Hancock in my un-biased view.
The entire group is tight and,you see, the one sure way to de-scribe Perdrito Martinez andhis entourage's sound would beto say that they are all musicallygifted. Their passionate, infec-tious Afro-Cuban rhythmicsound is a refreshingly vibrantinterpretation of the group's ar-dent Latino based sound, andit's a totally modern combina-tion of get up and dance Afro-Latin based drumming andrhythmic music and so muchmore.
In an exclusive interviewwith Mr. Martinez, 43, on thefollowing day (Sunday) after Isaw the the group's initial con-cert, and before the last of histwo Spoleto scheduled shows,he related to me in our inter-view some things about hisbackground that influences hismusical outlook and approachto life in general.
He hails originally from Ha-vana, Cuba, and the roots of hisyouth and the effects of thedrums run through him till thisvery day. "It's an honor to beCuban" is how he expressed hislove of his native land.
Pedrito related, "I grew upin a little neighborhood in themiddle of Havana and wasraised in a section of Havanawhere music was a constant. Itwas amazing. I didn't have a lotof food, clothes, etc., but thankGod we had the music. The sit-uation was tough.
"It was (still) beautiful. Ilearned a lot from the streets, and I never went to musicschool. All I learned was fromthe streets. It was amazing. Ihad to be given permission tobe taught this music by the reli-gious elders in my community, which is a direct offshoot ofwhat the enslaved Africans leftus musically."
Mr. Martinez has been livingin America for eighteen yearsnow, and he's been happily mar-ried for nineteen. He and hiswife have a beautiful 15-year-olddaughter, a point of referencethat brought a proud smile onMr. Martinez' handsome andyouthful looking face when heexpressed love of his family.
Pedro Pablo "Pedrito" Mar-tinez, with the affectionate nick-name, which in Spanish literallymeans "Little Pedro," is a muchadmired musician who has per-formed with the likes of PaquitoD'Rivera, Bruce Springsteen,Wynton Marsalis and PaulSimon. He has an enormouslyadmiring fan in none other thanthe great Quincy Jones.
The young percussionist ex-
traordinaire is a serious propo-nent of the Afro-Cuban andother Latino influenced musicalconcepts that is delighting peo-ple from Japan to South Amer-ica and everywhere that's inbetween. He's put out twoCDs to date, including the siz-zler "Habana'Dreams, releasedin June 2016, and his first albumin 2013 was chosen amongNPR's favorite albums for thatyear.
It's important to never forgetthat Mr. Martinez' drummingtechnique is definitely intense, which is also reflective in hissinging and overall musical pre-sentations. It's also conta-giously spontaneous to theatmosphere of having a grandtime and celebrating a goodmood to be in.
There's something very gen-uine about this young brotherthat exudes a sweet flow of re-spect. In fact, this young andgifted performer, a Yorubapriest, explained to me abouthow much he values and has re-spect for other religious tradi-tions.

By Hakim Abdul-Ali "Pedrito" Martinez was a gen-
uinely unique and polite inter-viewee, but this energeticpercussionist is very wise be-yond his years, and I offer thatwith the greatest of respect tohis age. He's also youthfullycool and very hip.
There's more to this guy thanmusic. I sensed that during ourforty-minutes interview. Hepossesses exuberant class, charm and respect, and I mustsay that his love of his Afro-Cuban musical ancestry is elec-tric in so many ways.
You can't help but like him onan individual level, but you ap-preciate him more as the leaderof one of the world's uniquelydynamic Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat based ensemble. If thatever was in doubt, all youneeded for further verificationwas to have heard (and wit-nessed) the Pedrito MartinezGroup last Saturday and Sun-day nights at Spoleto FestivalUSA 2017 proving to one andall in attendance how truly dy-namic that they are. They sim-ply "wowed" everyone.
