So you’ve decided to sell your house. What are you going to do with all the “stuff” that has been accumulating over the years?

Whether you hold it in your yard, the ga-rage, pole barn or other outdoor structure — a sale to get rid of your unwanted, unneeded items and make a little cash while you’re doing it is a great way to go about it.

Holding a garage sale can be a tedious process, but not if you get organized and plan ahead.

Getting ready to sell your home?

package. For $36 for one issue ($54 for two), you will receive a 20-word ad with color photo in the garage sale section of the Classified Ads. In addition, you will receive five signs for your sale, three sheets of stickers (250 total), a tip sheet and a coupon for $3 off your next ad.

Your sale will not only be published in the print edition of the Tri-County Times, but will also be featured on our online Featured Top Ad at www.tctimes.com. A text blast also will go out to all our subscribers.

Get your sale items togetherThis will likely be the most time-con-

suming activity involved with holding your sale. Get your girlfriends or kids to help. Go through your house, room by room, and separate unwanted items into two categories — throw away and sell (we’ll get to donate later).

Don’t forget to look in the basement and attic, too. The more you can get rid of at this sale the cleaner your house will be when it comes time to sell.

Once you have all your items collected, make sure they are clean — that means eve-rything — clothing, cookware, dishware, knick-knacks, paintings, books and more. There’s nothing nastier than to look into a garage sale crockpot, for example, and seeing gunk stuck to the bottom.

PricingAfter everything is clean, you will need

to price your items. Unless you want to haul all of this stuff back into the house after your sale, make sure the price is right. Too often, people walk away from yard and garage sales because the prices are too high.

For garage-salers it’s all about the bargain and the thrill of the hunt. They lit-erally want to pay for great finds in nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills. If you can’t find it in your heart to sell something for dirt cheap, maybe you shouldn’t sell it.

Please do price every-thing. There is nothing more annoying than to have to ask for prices at busy garage sales.

At the sale, be willing to entertain lower offers. Peo-ple like to bargain so when you hear “Will you take this

TRI-COUNTY TIMES | TIM JAGIELO

Brackenridge’s mother Lien Linderman came from Houston, Texas to help with the sale.

YARD SALEContinued from Page 1B(weather.org) to check what the weather will likely be that weekend. Also, choose a weekend about three weeks in advance, giving you enough time to advertise your sale.

AdvertiseSeasoned local “salers” know to con-

sult the Wednesday, Midweek edition of the Tri-County Times for garage sales that begin the next day or the following Thursday.

much for this …” bite your tongue and try to say yes.

Whether you decide to end your sale on Saturday or Sunday, take at least the last half of the day and offer the remain-ing items for half price. This is your last chance to get things out of your garage.

PresentationEither the night before or early morn-

ing of the sale, lay out the items you are selling on tables or other surfaces (that hopefully your husband has already fig-ured out and put into place) around the garage. If there are items in your garage that are not for sale, cover them with a sheet so people know they are inacces-sible.

Keep like items together — neatly folded T-shirts, jeans, shorts, etc. together on one table. Coffee mugs, dishware, silverware, cookware and kitchen ap-pliances, if there’s room on another surface. Put the small kitchen appliances like toasters, blenders, crockpots, etc. on another table if necessary.

Hardcover and paperback books can be placed inside cardboard boxes like a library shelf, showing the title on the spine. These can be placed on the garage floor or in the yard with other items such as indoor and outdoor furniture, toys, large pieces of artwork, etc.

If your husband has tools he wants to sell, make sure those are all displayed in one area. Make sure he prices them and make sure he tells you what “rock bottom” offer he will accept if he’s not planning to be there.

Have fun Holding a garage or yard sale is not

only a great way to get rid of your un-wanted items and make some money, but also to visit with friends and neighbors you haven’t seen in a while.

If you’ve chosen a Realtor to work with by the time of your sale, make sure you have plenty of that agent’s business cards on hand to give to your friends and neighbors, who may know people look-ing for a home in your area.

After the saleHere’s the easy part — after the sale,

pack and bag up all the items you didn’t sell and donate them to local charities like Goodwill, Salvation Army or St. Vincent DePaul. Many of them will pick your items up for free.

If there are items you think are still too valuable to give away, consider taking them to a local consignment store and give them a crack at selling your goods for you. Your net earnings will be about 50 percent of the sale price.

The original is always the best. That’s the general consensus when it comes to sequels of movies and books. Some experts call sequels “terrible twos,” and for good reason.

On average, they don’t make nearly as much as the first installment. Ac-cording to USAToday, the 16 sequels that have been released this year so far have made 18 percent less in their opening weekend compared to their respective first movie.

Source: Rolling Stone

Jaws 2Steven Spielberg didn’t come back for the re -

boot, which was a wise choice. The budget

was big, but the plot was familiar to the original. The other two sequels also did poorly.

The Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

James Cameron, the man behind the first and second Terminator movies, didn’t come back for the third installment. Arnold Schwarzenegger came back nearly 20 years after the original movies, but he was older even though robots aren’t supposed to age.

Edward F urlong was unable to re-prise his role as John Connor due to severe addiction is -sues.

Batman & Robin (1997)While the Christopher Nolan Batman

sequel “The Dark Knight” is rated as one of the best movies ever on Rotten Tomatoes and with other critics, not all Batman sequels did as well.

The George Clooney Batman movie only made $107 million in America, with a $125 million budget.

Spiderman 3The Spiderman franchise in the early

2000s jumpstarted the huge superhero, blockbuster movie craze, but it died out with “Spiderman 3.”

Spiderman bat -tled three villains — Venom, Sandman, and New Goblin, which many critics argue is too many. Sony decided not to do “Spiderman 4” and instead opted to wait to reboot the series years later with a new Spiderman.

Grease 2Any song from the original “Grease”

movie is as memorable as the movie. Such is not the case for “Grease 2,” a movie not many people know about because it did so poorly.

Didi Conn, who played F renchy, came back, but she was without John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Jeff Con-way and Stockard Channing.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdomof the Crystal Skull

After the movie, Shia LaBeouf, who played Harrison Ford’s long-lost son, admitted he and Ford didn’t like the plot. He said he felt like he dropped the ball on a very loved and cher -ished legacy. Critics shared his opinion.

Caddyshack IIR o d n e y

Dangerf ie ld re fused to come back for the sequel. Chevy Chase returned, but later admit -ted it was a mistake. Har -o l d R a m i s co-wrote the mov ie , but had his name taken off it.

They anticipated the movie would tank, and it did, only making a little over $11 million. blu-ray.com

nOwners take pride in using simple ingredients and time to make it into quality bread By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282

In our American society that rushes to the fast lane, CRUST in Fenton has taken the slow route to a truly great loaf of bread.

The owners are sharing that process in their new three-minute video produced by Reel Times videographer Tim Jagielo — giving a behind-the-scenes look to regular customers from as far away as Dearborn and Midland.

“It’s flour, water, yeast and salt for flavor,” said Mike Green, head baker/co-owner. “What gives the bread its flavor is the time to fer-ment. Time equals flavor.”

CRUST turns out 20 different varieties of bread and dozens of other baked products from dough-nuts to French pastries, “doing it the right way from scratch,” said Green. “On a busy day, we’ll make over a ton of bread.”

While CRUST has become a well-known, well-loved business in its home-town of Fenton, it has also earned a re-gional and national reputation, thanks to

a bustling wholesale business. Specialty food stores, farmers markets and restau-rants from as far away as Midland and Dearborn enjoy CRUST breads, pastries and baked goods every day.

“A fleet of CRUST delivery trucks leaves very early every morning to places like the Midland Farmers Market and Westborn Markets in Berkley, Livonia and Dearborn,” said Holly Nachtigal, marketing director for CRUST and The Laundry. “This video gives our customers

who are farther away a chance to see how we make their favorite baked goods. It’s almost like hav-ing their own tour of our baking facilities.” In addition to using all natural, quality ingredients, CRUST takes great pride in its staff of quality employees. Recent promotions have taken place:• Mark Dixon, PM bake manager, pastry kitchen.• Kayla Griffiths, quality manager.

• Whitney Nimmo, bread kitchen manager.• Dan Hartwig, bread kitchen manager.• Shelby Nickerson, retail manager.• Mandy Willetts, human resources manager.

New CRUST video shows ‘slow’ processnNew year-‘round business caters to those who love the thrill of fireworksBy Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282

Jerry Srp of Argentine Township grew up loving the thrill and excitement of fireworks.

When consumer fireworks became legal in Michigan in 2012, Srp kept in the back of his mind his dream job of opening a fireworks store. He decided to take a crack at selling fireworks year-round in Fenton, by opening Fenton Fireworks.

Fenton Fireworks opened in June at

17315 Silver Pkwy., next to Dunham’s Sports. “I sell everything that is con-sumer legal,” he said. “I’ve got firework cakes (aerial tubes with a single fuse), fountains, artillery shells and more.”

His permanent location for fireworks sales is a different approach than the many temporary businesses that pop up to sell fireworks this time of year, most of whom come from out of the area.

“I’m here, I’m local and committed to making a go of it,” said Srp.

Fenton Fireworks is open seven days a week with extended hours during this busy fireworks season. For more infor-mation, call (810) 354-8250.

which, of course, requires an even bigger Greek wedding so they can officially tie the knot. Meanwhile, Toula struggles to spice up her marriage to Ian (John Corbett), and is heartbroken when her daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) says she wants to go to a distant college in order to get away from her overbearing clan. PG13, 1 hr. 34 min.

MIDNIGHT SPECIALIn the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/directory Jeff Nicols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton

(Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever. PG-13, 1 hr. 51 min.

INGREDIENTS• 1 Pint Blueberies• 1 Pint Strawberries, stems

removed and halved• 4 Ounces White Chocolate,

chopped (or white chocolate chips)

• Appetizer Skewers

DIRECTIONS1. Alternate blueberries and strawberries on

skewers.2. Melt white chocolate either in the microwave

or a double boiler. For Microwave: Melt chocolate in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until chocolate is silky and just melted. For Double Boiler: Add one inch of water to a large saucepan and set the pan on the stove over medium high heat and bring to a simmer. Set a heatproof glass bowl inside the saucepan; be sure that the bottom of the bowl is not touching the water, you just want the steam from the water to heat the chocolate in the bowl. Place the white chocolate in the bowl and melt, stirring often, until chocolate is smooth and silky.

3. Using a fork, drizzle the white chocolate all over the skewers. Chill in the refrigerator to set/store.
