Pope is invited to addressUS Congress

United States: Pope Francis has been invited by House Speaker JohnBoehner to speak to a joint session of Congress.

Boehner extended the formal invitation today in a letter to the Vatican —on the one-year anniversary of his papacy — saying the Holy Father has“awakened hearts on every continent.”.

“Pope Francis has inspired millions of Americans with his pastoralmanner and servant leadership, challenging all people to lead lives of mercy, forgiveness, solidarity, and humble service,” Boehner wrote. “His tireless callfor the protection of the most vulnerable among us — the ailing, the disadvan-taged, the unemployed, the impoverished, the unborn — has awakenedhearts on every continent.”

Boehner, a Catholic, said the pope’s message “challenges people of allfaiths, ideologies and political parties.”

Since Paul VI made his first papal visit to the United States in 1965, threepopes have come to America. John Paul II, who came to the United Statesseven times, visited with every president from Jimmy Carter to Bill Clinton.

A pope has visited the United Nations four times, but one has neveraddressed the House and Senate during a joint session.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, also a Catholic, joined the speakerin his invitation.

“Whether inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, who cared for all of God’screation, or by St. Joseph, protector of the church,” Pelosi said, “Pope Francishas lived his values and upheld his promise to be a moral force, to protect thepoor and the needy, to serve as a champion of the less fortunate, and topromote love and understanding among faiths and nations.”

Congressional officials told ABC News they did not know whether PopeFrancis would accept the invitation to visit Washington. It is an open-endedinvitation, aides said.

“His social teachings, rooted in ‘the joy of the gospel,’ have promptedcareful reflection and vigorous dialogue among people of all ideologies andreligious views in the United States and throughout a rapidly changing world,”Boehner said, “particularly among those who champion human dignity, freedom, and social justice. ”

Indian RagaWhat I presumed to be the

morning raga and the chanting of mantras of ‘namo namo’

turned out to be just swishing in theair…..without substance, words ormelody!

Years ago, on my first night in thatrenowned retreat house, I was gentlyshaken out of my deep slumber by thewafting of a raga so sweet, I shookmyself fully awake and sat as though ina trance, straining to pick up the music.Beyond the window I could see theslight colouring of the eastern skyagainst the dark silhouette of the mightytrees that covered the grounds.

As I sat in silence, the gentle notesbuilt up in volume and speed, accom-panied by more instruments, the brasscymbals setting a resonant rhythm tothe song rendered up by deep bassvoices. The sitar, tabla and cymbalsblended beautifully with the clear lyricsand the clapping of palms. It swayed allcreation, carrying it in a current of pietyas a new day was gifted to mankind.Competing with the chirping of hun-dreds of little winged creatures fromthe trees, the singing seems to acquirea new quality, all its own! The morningraga washed over the ashram, sendingwaves of devotion across the vast acres, touching chords in every heart. Thesun still lurked behind the horizon butthe branches of trees had turned togold with the first rays of the rising sunwhich was still fighting shy of appear-ing lest it disrupt the devotion! It wasthe most pleasant experience of a

morning raga in the Retreat Housewhich I carry close to my heart, till thisday.

Down South, dawn is oftengreeted with the morning raga of clas-sical vocal, accompanied by the strum-ming of the Sitar. In this part of Indiaculture stares one in the face via themusic, dance, drama, temples, archi-tecture, flowers and the tinkling soundof ‘gungroo’ the tiny anklet bells ofdancers. Here they wake up to melodyand music and the morning raga iswoven into the beginning of a new day.To inhale the rich aroma of brewingcoffee is also to inhale the notes of theclassical morning raga emanating frommany households where the aspiringsingers train to excel. The sweet classi-cal music moves even hardened rock-disco lovers to acknowledge thesplendour of Indian raga and the chant-ing of mantras of worship, “namo,

namo”Then there was the movie, ‘Morn-

ing Raga’-simple, straight-forward andmusical, giving one of our great ac-tresses an opportunity to lip-sync to amemorable morning raga! And she didit to perfection, endearing it to evennovices like me. The landscapes in themovie, a slice of rural India, enhancedthe beauty of this raga, appreciated bytrue lovers of music and art. It may havefailed to shout from the rooftops but itdefinitely shook the foundations of com-mercial films.

But of late, Indians have beenpresented with another set of Raga andNamo, confusing the mind and drain-ing the spirit. The unsightly replicas ofwhat is interpreted as ‘raga’ and ‘namo’and the cacophony of verbal matchesblaring over the TV, radio, from everyother venue is an onslaught on thesenses, leaving us fuming at the nos-trils. While slandering each other, thesubjects seem to have happily acceptedthe acronyms in the false notion thatthey symbolise their worth and value.Whoever coined these terms has neverheard or experienced a beautiful morn-ing raga in his life! Novices lost in thewoods of journalism?

Women PowerThe country just celebrated

Women’s day on the 8th of this monthand it only appropriate that we assessthe real power of the women in Indiaparticularly on the political front. It isfrom here that power flows down. Eventhe so called democratically advancedcountries cannot match the ‘woman’power in politics in India. The sub-continent as a whole has seen tremen-dous woman power be it Pakistan,Bangladesh or Sri Lanka from the 1970s.

We have Sonia Gandhi headingthe country’s biggest party. Her word islaw and when she opens her mouth alldown the line keeps their mouths shut.If she decides on something that is finaland even the Prime Minister has nooption. She has held the party togetherwith a firm grip. Her power is absolutewith CWC etc being show pieces. Theappointments to various posts areguided by the loyalty index rather thatthe suitability / capability. Appointmentof Home Ministers, in the UPA regime,is one such example.

We have other powerful ladies.Jayalalitha of AIDMK in Tamil Nadu isone. She is soft spoken and also talksless. Amma as she is known decides onalmost everything. Nobody dare ques-tion her policies, appointments, dis-missals etc. What she says is binding. She goes about her work in a dignifiedmanner and maintains decorum. Bycontrast, you have TMC’s MamataBanerji a fire brand politician from WestBengal. She is vociferous and believesin being heard. Other leaders in theparty are pigmies. Didi to her partymen, functions like a dictator and showsher disenchantment openly even if itmeans breaking well set alliances. Shebrooks no dissent or criticism which isdangerous. Power has gone to her headbut showcases humility.

Mayawati, Behenji is another allpowerful woman leader belonging tothe backward class. She has held un-challenged sway over the party – theBSP in UP founded by Kanshi Ram.After he became too ill to function effec-tively, she donned the mantle of hermentor and since then has been theundisputed and unchallenged leaderof her party. Before she came on thescene, the Congress and the BJP playedsignificant role in the State. Now boththese parties stand dislodged with onlythe Samajwadi Party being able to chal-

lenge her supremacy. Despite multiplechallenges on the legal front, she hasstood firm.

BJP’s Sushma Swaraj the leaderof opposition in the Lok Sabha hasbeen dwarfed by the sudden emer-gence of Narendra Modi, a regionalplayer. Her frustration is now showingwith open dissent against the induc-tion of tainted Srimanulu in Karnataka. She was ignored. She has the tacitsupport of the elder sulking states-men – L.K.Advani and Dr M M Joshi. She feels totally sidelined and irrel-evant [as she stood a good chance ofbeing the PM] because once NaMotakes the centre stage it will be nighimpossible to dislodge him in a hurry. He is relatively young and administra-tively tested for his governance. He isthe choice of the rank and file of theparty as well as the youth of the na-tion. With the backing of the RSS, hisrole in the party is well cemented andfortified as well. BJP termed RahulGandhi a reluctant groom, but they donot realize that Sushmaji feels like arejected bride. Who knows DigvijayaSingh, who recently raked up Modi’smarital status without any response, may pick up this line in his next dia-tribe against the PM-in-waiting?

AAM [Party] Losing ItsTaste?

BJP workers are hounding the AAPleaders particularly Arvind Kejrival. Itgives an impression that he is personanon grata as far as Narendra Modi’sGujarat is concerned. He was evenstopped some 5 kilometers from theresidence of the CM when the formerDelhi CM decided to meet him to handover a list of some 16 questions. But AK,your questions might be pertinent butthat does not mean that you have to goall the way to his residence to hand themover. You could have issued a pressnote listing all the queries and the mediawould have taken the matter forward toits logical end. But you feel that themedia is being paid by big businesshouses. You could have sent them to theCMO.

Like you, Modi is also busy. Be-sides fighting elections he is also thePrime Ministerial candidate of the BJP

and therefore doubly busy. You cannotexpect him to be available to you atshort notice and there is no reason whyhe should do so. Perhaps Modi realizedthat you were indulging in theatrics butthe mission failed miserably. You too,Mr Kejrival, are busy with more impor-tant things to do than rush to CM’shouse.

Having wasted time you got de-layed and therefore were obliged totake a luxury chartered flight providedby those who wanted you to attend theirprogramme. Yes, it was provided freeof cost but if such an offer clashes withyour stated principles of austerity andsimple living, then you must put yourfoot down. It is not clear what type oftransport was provided to you from theairport to the venue. If they had to senda Mercedes or a BMW would you haveaccepted it just because someone pro-vided it? Great men have reached thatstature because of their sustained ad-herence to their stated values and prin-ciples. When Gandhiji decided to shunwestern clothes and wear only a dhoti,he stuck to it [bare-chested] even whenhe attended the Round Table Confer-ence in London. A young boy evenoffered to provide him a shirt. Austeritycannot be selective.

The inexperience of the Aam Partyis showing. They do not know where todraw the line and have come under firefrom the CEC. It is nice to indulge intheatrics but when such gimmicksbecome the order of the day, theylose the sheen. The incidents of hoo-liganism in Mumbai and senior lead-ers crying foul in the matter of ticketdistribution are sending wrong sig-nals. Assault on the media was un-called for. A party with handful ofmembers is in disarray. Yet, the con-tinuous fall in the brand value ofAnna Hazare because of his indeci-siveness may help the AAP. Annaji isa highly confused man today. Doeshe subscribe to BJP or TMC philoso-phy or is he simply trying to pull AKdown?

desperately tried to look for the answerfrom one news site to another andsuddenly the spokesperson from theVatican arrived at the window telling usthat name ‘Cardinal Jorge MarioBergoglio’ from Argentina was electedas Pope and would take the name of‘Francis’. Then ‘Bergoglio’ who? I hadnever heard of him? And why the nameof Francis? Just as I was doing a ‘googlesearch’ I got a call from a friend con-gratulating me for the first Jesuit Popein history; my reply was “a Jesuit? It justcannot be!” I had taken for granted thata Jesuit cannot become a Pope. Wellmy ‘google search’, was still on and myfriend was really right!

Bergoglio was indeed a Jesuit – awell-known one at that. In the mean-time, I began receiving email mes-

sages, texts and calls from all over. Iwas too excited to speak that night. And then I was in for a shock. As mil-lions of people both in the VaticanSquare and across the world watched,Pope Francis wished all gathered avery simple ‘good evening’ and in astyle that was soon going to be thehallmark of his papacy, he asked forthe prayers of ‘all men and women ofgoodwill to help him lead the CatholicChurch’. This was something out of theordinary. No Pope had ever done thatbefore! The revolution had begun!

A revolution indeed! As I lookback at this one eventful year for theCatholic Church and perhaps for thewhole world, I try to place before methe challenges that Pope Francis has

‘cosmetic’ or ‘symbolic’ - All of us seemto be noticing everything: the fact thathe has refused to stay in the Papalmansions; that his attire and even hisshoes are not what the past Popesordinarily wore; his sensitivity to makea phone call or to write a letter to themost ordinary person in a most unas-suming way; the fact that he can allowa little child to slowly walk up to thestage and literally take his seat; theaffection he exudes when he embracesa man with a disfigured face; his warmsimple gestures all the time has indeedwarmed the cockles of many a heart.St. Francis of Assisi whose name hechose must surely be smiling fromabove, that the head of the CatholicChurch today has the courage to takehim and all that he stood for very, veryseriously.

Pope Francis challengesme to be inclusive

And Pope Francis has done this ina most amazing way. He has reachedout to perhaps every group on PlanetEarth very specially to the poor, to themarginalized, to the minorities. On July8th, 2013, he visited the Sicilian islandof Lampedusa (which is closer to NorthAfrica than mainland Italy) which seesthe influx of thousands of immigrants

Pope Francis!

It was just a little after midnightof March 13th - 14th 2013.Like millions of others all over

the world, I too was impatientlywaiting for that white smoke whichwould emerge from the chimneyof the Sistine Chapel in theVatican heralding the news that anew Pope was elected. Therewere all kinds of rumours of the“going-ons” :who would beelected, what are the possibili-ties, how long it would take etcetc and suddenly the ticker onone of the news channel which Iwas searching on my computer, announced that the plume ofwhite smoke had emerged. APope had been elected!

A Pope elected! But whowas he? From where was he?Was he one of the ‘papabili’?There were hundreds of ques-tions that crossed my mind as I

thrown not only to me but to allof us. Personally, I am chal-lenged in several ways.

Pope Francis chal-lenges me to simplic-ity

from Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Egyptand other parts of North Africa as theyseek a better future in Europe. In hishomily, he greeted those present say-ing, “I give a thought, too, to the dearMuslim immigrants that are beginningthe fast of Ramadan, with best wishesfor abundant spiritual fruits. The Churchis near to you in the search for a moredignified life for yourselves and for yourfamilies”. A clear message to one andall that Christianity is about inclusive-ness, about going to the margins andwelcoming “the least of our sisters andbrothers”. The Holy Father then con-tinued with a very powerful message tothe whole world: “Today no one in theworld feels responsible for this (thedeaths of immigrants); we have lost thesense of fraternal responsibility; wehave fallen into the hypocritical attitudeof the priest and of the servant of thealtar that Jesus speaks about in theparable of the Good Samaritan: welook upon the brother half-dead by theroadside, perhaps we think “poor guy,”and we continue on our way; it’s noneof our business; and we feel fine withthis. We feel at peace with this, we feelfine! The culture of well-being, thatmakes us think of ourselves, that makesus insensitive to the cries of others, thatmakes us live in soap bubbles, that arebeautiful but are nothing, are illusionsof futility, of the transient, that bringsindifference to others, that brings eventhe globalization of indifference. In thisworld of globalization, we have falleninto a globalization of indifference. Weare accustomed to the suffering of oth-ers, it doesn’t concern us, it’s none ofour business.”

Pope Francis challengesme to live the Joy of theGospel

On November 24th, at the conclu-sion of the year of the Faith, PopeFrancis gave to the world his first Apos-tolic Exhortation entitled “EvangeliiGaudium” (the Joy of the Gospel). Inthis path-breaking document, he liter-ally challenges the Christians to tran-scend their narrowness and self-centredness in order to truly under-stand the person and message of Jesus. In no uncertain terms, he reminds allthat “the Gospel tells us constantly torun the risk of a face-to-face encounterwith others, with their physical pres-ence which challenges us, with theirpain and their pleas, with their joy whichinfects us in our close and continuesinteraction. True faith in the incarnateSon of God is inseparable from self-giving, from membership in the com-munity, from service, from reconcilia-tion with others. The Son of God, bybecoming flesh, summoned us to therevolution of tenderness”.

Pope Francis challengesme to be more of a Jesuit

It still is such a dream that thePope is a Jesuit - something perhapsunthinkable just over a year ago. I

joined the Jesuits in 1974 when Gen-eral Congregation XXXII became awatershed for Jesuits the world overwith the faith-justice mandate becom-ing the heart of the Jesuit way of pro-ceeding. In his one year as Pope, theworld has not lost sight of the fact thatFrancis is a Jesuit to the very core. Hiswords, his actions, his attitudes areJesuit through and through. When hespeaks about “conversion” he is obvi-ously using the Spiritual Exercises ofSt. Ignatius of Loyola which has beenso dear to him right from the time hejoined the Society of Jesus. In his na-tive Argentina, he always championedthe cause of the poor. Last December,he canonized Peter Favre, a close com-panion of St. Ignatius of Loyola whomhe praised for being “in dialogue withall, even the most remote and even withhis opponents.” Pope Francis has con-stantly been searching for the magis inall things just as St. Ignatius wanted allJesuits to be doing so.

Challenges indeed for me and forall and I am sure in the years ahead, wewill have many more challenges - HappyNew Year, dear Pope Francis! Thankyou for being my Pope, my brother andmy Shepherd!

JANARDHAN BANGERA

My short vacation at my home townMangalore, had also coincided withthe campaign visit of India’s most popu-lar and Prime Ministerial favorite candi-date NarendraModi. The city was lit upin exult and euphoria, and a day beforemodi’s arrival, a teenager wearingModi’s face mask walked straight intome and asked ‘Are You Modified’? Itsounded funny, I had no answer, justmuttered ‘ No, I am Terrified!

Managing the affairs of the stateisn’t easy, certainly not in a country asmuch complex and diverse as India. Astatesman requires tremendous men-tal energy and tactics to counter adver-saries and Political rivalries. Apart frommass management, he has to exhibit apenchant for the kind of leadershipfound in a military general or a medi-eval Indian emperor.

Most great statesmen have beeninspirational and innovative thinkers.Leadership comes natural to them,Leaders are born not made. Some ofthe greatest statesmen have createdrevolutionary impacts during theirreigns. Lets look at some of the menwho being at the helm of affairs in theirstates, made historic moves that provedturning factor in their country’s endeav-ors.

Franklin rooselvet was a states-man for crisis, he didn’t promise, hedelivered. It was the time of great de-pression in 1933, whileAmerica wenthungry, businessmen & stock traderscommitted suicide in the streets andunemployment spread in rampage.Rooselvelt used facilitationofeminentBritish economists JohnMaynard Keynes to overcome massiveunemployment and to restructure theeconomic debacle of the era as a whole.Free food was served to the workersand the profit was divided equallyamong all classes, funds were mobi-lized to counter future constraints.Within few years as the American Presi-dent, Rooselvelt was able to restore hiscountry’s economy and redeem itshonor from the jaws of worst financialcrisis ever.

Franklin Roosevelt & WinstonChurchill

Winston Churchill was elected asthe prime minister during thebreak ofsecond world war. As GermandictatorAdolf hitler’s evil ideologygained momentum with overnight in-vasion of several countries, his Naziforces declared war withBritain.Churchill showed no signs ofpanic. In his early daysas a freedom fighter with MahatmaGandhi, Nehru spent years in Prison, where he penned down prolific worksof history and his idea of a SecularSocialist India. have served as the premier institutes inproducing iconic individuals in thecountry. Nehru’s charisma was able toconquer the country’s millions, as hesuccessfully won mandate for a periodof seventeen long years.

LalBahudurShastri was the india’ssecond elected prime minister. A simpleand down to earth individual shastrisustained major infiltration in Kashmirfrom Pakistani militantsin the year 1965,where eventually Pakistan surrendered. His brief period at the top saw develop-ments in agriculture sector, popularlyhailed as the ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’.

After the untimely and little myste-rious death of LalBahudurshastri( gov-ernment confirmed heart attack) in1967, Indira Gandhi the daughter ofJawaharlal Nehru was sworn in as thethird prime minister of the country. Af-ter few years of able governance, eco-nomic stability and the triumphantBangladesh liberation war against Pa-kistan, Indira Gandhi’s governmentcame under scanner. The veteran Anti-Corruption crusader andactivistJayprakash Narayan and So-cialist Labour Union Leader GeorgeFernandes vociferously confrontedIndira Gandhi’s government of fraud,Corruption, bribery, favoritism and elec-toral fraud . And as the media and theopposition also got stronger in its de-nouncement of her government, IndiraGandhi resorted to Autocracy and im-mediately reinstated emergency rule, whereby suspending democracy.

Large scale demonstrations wereorganized throughout, many leaders, journalists, activists were put behindbars, tortured and even killed insidethe cells. And finally her governmentwas routed out in the 1977 generalelections as the Janata Party swept themandate.

Post Indira Gandhi, several lead-ers rose to power and departed, andnone was able to keep up the tempothat Nehru, Shastri and Indira Gandhihad maintained. The charisma was lostand so did the people’s confidence.Politicians were seen with suspicionand people’s faith began to deplete.

How are TodaysLeaders shaping

up?NarendraModi has become a

popular figure in the political circlesand has won mass following. His ad-mirers worship him. The social mediahas been flooded withNarendramodi’spromos and has been lauded by hisadmirers as Namo and mocked by hisdetractors as Feku.Neverthless, theRSS and the BJP showed no secondthoughts in appointing him as theirPrime Ministrial candidate, amidst re-sentment from renowned Veteran BJPLeader LK Advani.

NarendraModi’s history is coloredwith shades of progressive and divi-sive politics. That largely symbolizes aman with a smart mind and an evilheart. He cleverly uses crowd psycheand amends his speeches accordingly. While on campaign, he insidiously usessecularism, nationalism and commu-nalism all in one.

Modi isn’t a great orator, butframes his speeches with slap stickdialogues that easily pull crowds. Al-though his vote bank and crowds makeup of both rural population and theurban middle class English speakers,Modi’s command over the English lan-guage looks skeptical. Some say hisEnglish is as bad as Sonia Gandhi’sHindi! Nevertheless, His targets aresoft, those that don’t bite back. Afrequent target is the ruling Congresssupremo Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul, her Son-in-Law , her PoliticalDynastyand the Prime Minister of IndiaDr. Manmohan Singh. He accuses con-gress party as the epitome of corrup-tion and often quotes his famous dia-logue ‘Congress and Corruption aretwin brothers, that can never be sepa-rated.

On the other hand, Modi has neverbeen critical of the more notorious fig-ure in the hell-world of corruption andcrime,SharadPowar. Infact, someallegeSharad Power as the most cor-rupt man living on the planet!SharadPowar has the crowd, the cor-porate india and the mafia on his side, which makes matters difficult or ratherimpossible to nail him. And so far onlyAnna Hazzarehas effectively pointed afinger at this political monster. .

Modi speaks a lot and hardly lis-

tens, his temper is fragile, and habitu-ally frails when questions irk him. Modi’sfourteen years span as the chief minis-ter of Gujarath is marked with mixedoutlines of polarization and conver-gence, hate and reconciliation, preju-dice and tolerance, xenophobia andmoderation, Destruction and Recon-struction. Under Modi, Gujarathhas builtup dominance in infrastructure and gov-ernance. While its Social developmentindex and community integration isone of the lowest in the contry.

Although, Gujarath is no betterthan other well developed states in thecountry, and as more or less sameliving standard and life style, its mar-keting and Modis PR is executed withacute competence and spectacularhype. Although the, Corporate con-trolled Media has been standing by hisside and has been covertly promotinghim as a brand, there are independentwriters who maraud critical essays andcolumnsabout his views and deeds. But for Modi, no negative publicity is abad publicity

Rahul Gandhi ‘s name appears asthe front runner for the congress party’sprime ministerial candidacy. Being theson of the congress party supremoSonia Gandhi, it has been a rather easyroute for him in the political sphere.Rahul has been object of ridicule andparody across the social media andthe blogosphere. His verbal delivery, general knowledge and his leadershipskills are pegged with giant questionmarks. His party has been plagued byaccusations of massive corruption, misuse of funds, nepotism, bribery, crony capitalism etc. So far, RahulGandhi hasn’t been successful in eras-ing the black scars labelled all over hisparty.

Rahul Gandhi hasn’t spoken outon core issues, nor has connected tothe young educated masses. He hassought only the ruler vote bank. In hisspeeches he repeatedly emphasizeson change, but ten years of his party’sruling has brought about inflation, in-competence and economic debacle.Nobody is aware about his ideas, hisforesight for the country. His disposi-tion as a leader has met with seriouslimitations. He suspends hard work for

Opinion polls predictCongress routIf opinion polls are to be be-

lieved, then the inevitable result of suchpolls conducted in different states ofthe country, is the ignominious rout ofthe congress and an upswing in theBJP votes. Even Karnataka which wit-nessed mega mining scams under theBJP rule during the tenure of formerchief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa hasnot changed its mindset , with the BJPall set to capture 45% of the votes in theupcoming Lok Sabha elections. This isunlike what happened in Goa, wherethe people, disgusted with years ofmisrule and corruption of former Con-gress govts, voted all out in favour ofthe BJP in the last Assembly elections.Today, the political landscape haschanged nationwide. Both the Con-gress and the BJP are seen as corruptand no different from each other. This

Gandhiji in his most cherishedbook “India of my dream” says: “Weshould be ashamed of resting or havinga square meal so long as there is oneable-bodied man or woman withoutwork or food.” Inspired by these wordsSonia Gandhi, the chief of CongressParty (certainly a follower of Jesus)first introduced MNREGA and now in-troduced RTF to provide food to themillions of our poor brothers/sisterswho are forced to go to bed daily withempty stomach and save the lives ofmillions mal/under nourished childrenwho die immaturely.

In my view the Lord has in hisgoodness, providentially opened, be-fore us, the Church in India, a new andthe most urgent avenue of service toour millions of poor starving brothers/sisters in the country. As happens inIndia many of the government schemesmean for the welfare of the poor, fail toget implemented because of eithercorruption in the public sector or be-cause of the ignorance and theconsequentl inability on the part of thebeneficiaries of these schemes. RTFwill require having the adhar card, a

bank account etc and of course, theproper understanding of the RTF. Hereis where, especially the parishes, caneither initiate a new ministry or add tothe ‘Vicent de Paul’ association anorganized campaign of educating thepoor in the parish area regarding thescheme, assist them in getting theadhar card, opening as well as han-dling the Bank Account and makingsure that the beneficiaries get the fullbenefit of the RTF. Our schools and thecolleges can also take up such cam-paign through the students studyingwith us. As we are searching for thenew avenues of our services in thepresent contexts of the world, the fol-lowing words of Mahatma Gandhi, thefather of our nation, may inspire andencourage us to embrace this newavenue of Jesuit services in India.

“For the poor the economic is thespiritual. You cannot make any otherappeal to those starving millions. It willfall flat on them. But you take food tothem and they will regard you as theirGod. They are incapable of any otherthought.” (Young India, 5-5-’27)

Christians with one voice at Azad Maidan:

‘Save Our Land’A massive rally was held at Azad Maidan on 15th March2014 to highlight minority concerns particularly Christians. The community is upset with the Maharashtra State Govern-ments’ apathy towards the community on several issuesand has decided to come out on the streets to agitate.

The rally and meeting at in Azad Maidan was called byan alliance of over 30 Christian organizations and localparishes and some prominent civil society leaders joinedthe protest.

A memorandum of demands was also handed over tomunicipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte.

The protest was triggered by notices from the munici-pal corporation, issued two years ago to St Anthony'sChurch and St Anthony's School, in Malwani, for acquisitionof land to widen the road running alongside these institu-tions.

Similar notices have also been received by Our Ladyof Assumption Church nd St Joseph School in Kandivli. Thecommunity has also demanded withdrawal of notices fordemolition of Crosses in various parts of the city and theprotection of Gaonthans.

Community members explained that while they had noobjections to development, the road-widening project haddone injustice to them as the original plan was changed totake away church land.

"The road line has been there since 1971. According tothe road line, the widening should be done on either side ofthe existing median. In that case we would have had to giveup about 10,000 sq ft and not 25,000 sq ft. But since threebuildings have come up on the other side, they havechanged the road line and will take all the land from us," saidFr Austin Norris, parish priest, St Anthony's Church.

"These buildings came up in 2000. When the BMCknew that it had to widen the road there was no reason forit to allow the buildings to come up. These land acquisitionnotices must be withdrawn," said Dolphy D'Souza, spokes-person of Save Our Land (SOUL), which is spearheadingthe agitation.

"This is a situation where we have to ensure that ourlands are saved," said Sailesh Gandhi.

Judge Suresh slammed the majoritarianism that hascrept into the system. "Today there is a rule by the majority(community) and not of the majority (who vote)," he said.

The municipal commissioner acknowledge receivinga memorandum on the issues and said, "They have givenme a representation and we will examine it."

Several prominent Christians and others spoke on theoccasion highliting the issues of minority and speciallydemanding permanent withdrawal of unjust BMC land ac-quisition notices. The agitation rally was organised with thesupport of over 30 organisations under the umbrella ofSOUL - Save Our Land.

My steps are slow, my body isgrowing weak and my eyesdim, my hearing and speech

impaired, but I reminiscence my pastwith joy when I fondled you in my armsand helped you walk, wiped your noseand dressed you up’. This would prob-ably be any aging mothers’ thoughts.

As a priest, I have been at thedeath-bed of people as old as ninetyfour. I have seen their feelings in theirpassing moments ranging from regretto rejoicing. Regret when children aban-don their hands that rocked their cradlesand rejoicing at the way their children

have walked with them in the eveningof their life.

The scriptures urge us to counton an ever Faithful God who will saveus from distressful thoughts as we jour-ney away from this world. “Even to yourold age I am He, and to gray hairs I willcarry you. I have made, and I will bear;I will carry and will save (Isaiah46:4).“So we do not lose heart. Though ourouter self is wasting away, our innerself is being renewed day by day in theLord” (2Cor 4:16). “He gives power tothe faint, and to him who has no mighthe increases strength”(Is 40:29).

The scriptures also promise greatblessings upon those who respect andcare for their aging parents, blessingsthat all the worlds’ money cannot buy.“Listen to your father, who gave youlife, and do not despise your motherwhen she is old. (Proverbs 23:22).“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the landthat the Lord your God is giving you.(Deuteronomy 5:16). “Listen my son,to your father’s instruction, and forsakenot your mother’s teaching, for they area graceful garland for your head andpendants for your neck” (Proverbs 1:8-9)

Polish-born American Jewishtheologian and philosopher AbrahamJoshua Heschel writes “A test of apeople is how it behaves toward theold. It is easy to love children. Eventyrants and dictators make a point ofbeing fond of children. But the affec-tion and care for the old, the helpless

are the gold mines of a culture”.Waiting lists at homes for aged

today are swelling to enormous pro-portions indicative of a culture of grow-ing neglect for the old. The race for timeand money can snatch away from chil-dren the desire to be with their parentswhen they need them most.

A young man lost his patiencewith his aging father who frequentlydropped porcelain cups while hesipped his soup. He and his wife gothim a wooden bowl and sat him in acorner of the room every day at dinner.

Two weeks later, the couple foundtheir seven-year old busy with piecesof wood. They asked him “Son, whatare you so busy with?” To their rudeshock, the little boy innocently replied“I’m making two wooden soup bowls;one for papa and one for mamma, because when you grow old you willneed them like grandpa does”. Tearswelled-up in the eyes of the parents. The old man was restored to the diningtable with a new porcelain bowl.

Have you looked kindly uponyour parents?

ArvindKejriwal’s rise from a gov-ernment employee to a RTI activistsand finally to become the chief ministerof India’s capital has been dramaticand almost miraculous. It’s a successstory of india’s functional and vibrantdemocracy. Kejriwal’s leadership skills, his never say die spirit, his courage totake on India’s big shots and his ulti-mate humility marks the beginning of aStatesman in making. Kejriwal listensand speaks accordingly. He doesn’tboast, nor does he use foul languageto ridicule his opposition. He is clean, sincere and has no corporate ordynastical backing. His politics is based

(Contd.. from p. 9)on bringing to task the corrupt, criminaland the communal. Kejriwal symbol-izes every urban Indian middle class, who graduates, finds job for a living, marries and runs a family, but also asocially conscious individual.

Analumnus from IIT kharagpur,Kejriwal spent few years in governmentservice and later as a hardcore RTIactivist. He was the leading member ofthe Anna Hazareanti-corruption cru-sade movement. After the Anna move-ment party members like KiranBediand Baba Ramdev made alliance withopposition BJP, and annahazare loststeam, ArvindKejriwaldecided to regis-ter his own political outfit the AamAdmipartywith his close mates and installedbroom as the party’s emblem, and wasable to sweep the mandate in Delhi, bydriving out the glued chief ministerSheila Dixit out of her seat. His recentresignation as the Chief Minister ofDelhi, raises hopes of his chances atthe National Front.

This election unlike the previousones, would be more dependent onthe Social Media and the Internet world.A substantial amount of campaigningby all three main leaders is done onsocial media. But whether the youngvoters are going to transform their ob-session to leaders from their drawingrooms to the Ballet Box, is to be seen. But mere promise of Economic devel-opment by some politicians should notchange one’s morals, humanity is thelast and the final character that definesa modern civilized nation.

Making of a Statesman

1. There is no central high command inAam Aadmi party. The party struc-ture follows a bottom to top approachwhere the council members electthe Executive Body and also holdsthe power to recall it.

2. No MLA or MP of this party will usered lights or any other beacons onhis or her vehicles.

3. No MLA or MP of this party will useany special security. We believe thatelected people’s representativesneed the same security as a com-mon man.

4. No MLA or MP of our party will live inopulent and luxurious governmenthousing.

5. No one would need to buy an elec-tion ticket in our party. Candidatescontesting elections from an areawill be selected by the people of thatarea.

6. In all political parties today criminalsand mafia goons are given electiontickets. Such people will never begiven tickets in our party. A thoroughscreening process will ensure thatno one with a criminal record or

How is the AAP different? proven corruption charges couldstand for elections from our party.

7. This party will function with full finan-cial transparency. Every single ru-pee collected by donations to runthis people’s party will be publiclydeclared on the party’s website andall expenditures will also be declaredon the website.

8. Every member of the Aam Aadmiparty will have to follow a strict inter-nal code of conduct or internalLokpal. This independent body willbe headed by 3 jurists and othereminent personalities with impec-cable public records and will investi-gate charges of corruption, crime, substance abuse and moral turpi-tude against all office bearing mem-bers of the party. Any citizen canpresent proof of wrongdoing againsta party member. If internal Lokpalfinds the party member guilty, he orshe will be subjected to appropriatedisciplinary action as decided by theinternal Lokpal.

9. No two members of the same familywill be eligible to contest elections inour party and no two members of thesame family can become membersof the Executive Body.

10. Today we give our vote to a candi-date, he or she wins the election, andthen they disappear from our life.Today most elected representativesmake no time to listen to the prob-lems of their constituents. And in thecurrent electoral system, the peoplehave no choice but to suffer thiscandidate for 5 years. We want tocreate an alternative. We will enact aRight to reject law wherein the com-mon man does not have to wait for 5years to remove a corrupt MLA or MPfrom office. People can complain tothe election commission anytime torecall their representative and callfor fresh elections.

11. Aam Aadmi Party is fully committedto the principles of gender equityand will represent women and stu-dents amply at all levels of partyorganization.

12. Aam Aadmi Party is committed tothe principles of justice for all and willco-opt representatives from the Dalitand other minority segments of soci-ety at all levels of party organization.

Onlyconcrete results matter; tireless effortis just the stuff you do to get there.Masterpiece creators do not act as ifthey are passengers on some cruiseship transporting them to retirement. They assume responsibility for theirown destiny, never hiding.

Be a joy carrier to those you serve.Successful entrepreneurs are joy carri-ers bringing a bold spirit to all they

influence. Theythink positively, assume suc-cess, and workwith a clear vi-sion of what theywant to be, notwhat just whatthey have to do.Spirit is not in-herited, ac-quired or bor-rowed. One

chooses spirit much like you choose tointroduce yourself to a stranger. Thosewho opt for an upbeat, positive spiritare happier, healthier, and far moresuccessful. Great entrepreneurs arebold and courageous and their spirit iscontagious.

Assume complete accountabilityfor results. Playing the blame gamedoes not get you a “get out of jail free”card. Clients and customers are nevermoved by hand-ringing excuses normade more confident by shifting thefocus to the supplier who failed to de-liver. Being late signals a lack of com-mitment, regardless of the reason. Be-ing unprepared telegraphs you don’tcare about your client or customer, despite the demons you tussled theday before. Winners show up ready toperform and are only interested in ef-forts that yield a path to achievement.

Be both a doer and marketer.Successful entrepreneurs are bothdriven and ardent promoters. Thismeans they don’t just focus on theirproduct, service or solution -- they alsomarket their work. Ralph WaldoEmerson wrote, “If a man has goodcorn or wood, or boards, or pigs, tosell, or can make better chairs or knives, crucibles or church organs, than any-body else, you will find a broad hard-beaten road to his house, though it bein the woods.” Ralph made no mentionof a better mousetrap, and he clearlyhad no knowledge of the importance of

Importance of a Budget

Budgeting is very important interms of future financial planning and is an important part

of personal finance.Budgeting is an important part

of your personal finances. If you don'tbudget, or did at one time but stopped, take the time to set something uptoday.

What You Measure, You Can Im-prove

The classic struggle with moneyis always to spend less than you earn.If you spend more than you earn, yourun the risk of burning through yoursavings and taking on debt. Once youstart budgeting, you’ll have a betteridea of how much you’re spendingand know how much “wiggle room”you have in your monthly spending.

Helps In Decision MakingBy knowing how much you

spend on each category, you canmake decisions about your spend-ing. Having numbers gives you theinformation you need to decidewhether you are spending too muchin one category or spending too little.By writing down each purchase oreach expense, you start making ac-tive decisions, rather than going alongwith what you did last month.

Budget In Savings

If you don’t budget, chances areyour savings strategy is to “save what-ever is left at the end of the month.”That’s a bad way to save towards yourgoals because it’s unpredictable, es-pecially if you’re not budgeting. It’sbetter to establish an amount and in-clude it in your monthly budget, thatway you can be sure to hit your savingstargets.

It Helps You PlanOnce you save up an emergency

fund, you start saving for a house or acar, maybe you pay down some debt,or maybe you save towards starting afamily. You will reach these goals fasterif you manage your finances closelyand actively contribute to your savings. We all know we want to achieve certainmilestones in our lives, now it’s a mat-ter of putting in a system that gets usthere.

Keeps You HonestWhen you have to document ev-

ery purchase, it keeps you honest. Itplugs up the leaks in your budget wheremoney slips out because you weren’tkeeping too close tabs on it. Do youjust pull cash out of your wallet or pursewithout any accounting for that money? It’s so easy to take Rs. 500 out of theATM and just spend it. There’s no ac-countability, you can spend it on any-thing and you wouldn’t be the wisercome the end of the month.

Avoid Debt, Help Your CreditHere’s a bonus reason that I don’t

think most people keep in mind – bybudgeting, you avoid debt. By budget-ing, you avoid spending more than youearn and you avoid the downward spi-ral of credit card debt. This will helpensure you have a good credit andcredit score so that you can get lowinterest loans on the things you maywant to buy in the future, such as a caror a house.

The best way to understand whythe season of lent had to happen, is toimagine what it would be like if it didnot. There is a logical necessity in thereality of remembering Jesus’ Passion, his brutal and violent physical sufferingat the hands of the Romans his torturedmind at the infamous words of con-demnation raised by the Jews and hisspiritual agony in the place calledGethsemane.

The season of lent guides us tothe joyful proclamation of Easter. Anancient version of Psalm (138 V 18b)says, ‘Resurrexi et adhuc tecum sum’which means, “I have risen, I am stillwith you, forever.” The Lenten periodgoes back to the time of the Apostles.Lent is when we prepare our individualself in a soulful and devotional cleans-ing for the greatest Christian festival,Easter.

Jesus, the promised Messiah, hadto suffer. He had to die His passion andresurrection was to be in fulfillment ofwhat the prophets had relayed in theopen and heroic messages – the com-ing of the Messiah, the Christ who wouldsave man from his sin and wickedness. We meditate, this week in lent on theaffirmation that Jesus knew the role hewas commissioned to accomplish. Hispain and sacrifice would be the su-preme ransom paid for man’s iniquity, his life given to rescue humanity fromthe scourge of evil. This is Christ’s all-conquering divine nature. Yes, in three

one of the vision, until the Son of manis raised from the dead. Jesus had thus

predicted his resurrection. Ourlifelong obsession is in the faithwe possess in Christ, as thecenterpiece of our world. Theexperience of Christianity isJesus’ suffering, which is thebone marrow of salvation. For-giveness and humility, per-haps two of the most difficultattributes of Christian faith isbound in the theology of ‘com-passion for humanity’.

Once again, for thethird time Jesus spoke of hisresurrection. This time toMartha; Jesus said to her, “ Iam the resurrection and thelife; he who believes in me,though he die, yet shall helive, and whoever lives andbelieves in me shall never die.”(Jn.11:25-26).

The meditative adoration of theCross reminds us of Jesus, the scourg-ing, the crowning of thorns, the way ofthe Cross, the nails being driven intohis hands and feet. “He was woundedfor our transgressions,” said the prophetIsaiah, adding, “ He was bruised for ouriniquities; upon him was the chastise-ment that made us whole, and with hisstripes we are healed.” (Is.53:5). HolyMother the Church selects the linesfrom the second letter of Paul to Timo-thy for us to meditate on at lent.2Tim.1:8-10. “Our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought lifeand immortality to light through thegospel.”

Jesus continues to fascinate thenon-believer worldwide, enriches ourtrust and faith in Him, and we will for-ever celebrate the atonement whichleads to the salvation of humankind. His blood flows from his wounded side, washing away our sin _ praise God forthe promise of eternal life! During lentsay this prayer daily : SOUL OF CHRISTSANCTIFY ME.

Times When The MessiahRevealed His Resurrection

different encounters Jesus had revealedhis resurrection.

Our Lord went up to Jerusalem afew days before the Passover of theJews. He went first to visit the templeand was furious on seeing money-changers and men who had broughtsheep and ox and pigeons to do theirbusiness. After Jesus had driven themand their animals out of the temple, theJews asked him to show them a sign tosupport his words, “Take these thingsaway; you shall not make my Father’shouse a house of trade.” (Jn.2:16). Heturned to them and answered: “De-stroy this temple, and in three days I willraise it up” (Jn.2:19).

Note the words: Temple, Threedays and Raise. Christ had revealedhis coming resurrection. The Trans-figuration of Jesus on the mountain, inthe presence of Peter, James and John(Mat.17:1-9) was a dramatic eventwhich Christ did not want his apostlesto disclose, till after his resurrection.“And as they were coming down themountain, Jesus told them, “Tell no
