Ailments and Age

At 78 I felt that I have experienced whatever thisexistence has to offer — a World War, otherwars, dictators who came and went, Lok

Sabha, state and local elections. Science has helpedto extend the life span through transplants, by-passsurgery, reconstruction surgery, chemo-therapy andwhat not. Science has also helped us cope withaging through the remote control, cell phones, hear-ing aids, walkers. However, I recently discovered thatI am now experiencing a phenomenon unique toageing — ailments.

Recently I felt as if I was swinging around in my bed. Some friends, who had come over, told my wife to call adoctor, she should take it seriously, I was suffering fromvertigo and anything could happen. I was unperturbed. Ifelt that I was having a free roller-coaster ride without thefear of falling off — I knew that I was already on the flat ofmy back. Just then my daughter arrived from Bangalore.God’s ways are mysterious. The doctor told her to give mesome medication and bring me for a check-up in themorning. I knew that my end was not so near after all.

The doctor diagnosed my problem as Malnutrition. My wife took this very seriously going to the super marketto get porridge, complan plus Spiced Prunes, Blue Cheese, corned beef, sardines, and all her other favorites. I wasadvised to wear a collar and a belt as my bone structureneeded to be held the way the medical books say it shouldbe. The problem was sleeping. Pillows had to be placedto support the shoulders; another was required below thespine, a third below the knee and two more under the heel.I decided that it would be better to sleep on a chair. Mywife, who potters around at night with trips to the frig; sawme in the drawing room. “What are you doing here at 3.00a.m.? You know you are not well. Get back into bed.”

I realized the importance of every part of my body, even a damaged knee can immobilize you, make theworld around you look terrible, prevent you from doingyour normal duties. However, I am still able to write andwas glad to see my article in print on the outcome of theelections. There were also comments on this, though notall were complementary. I learnt that everything is impor-tant. ABC analysis is for the management schools. In lifeeven the Cs are important. You realize this when you hurtyour little finger or a toe.

The big discovery we make when we are sick is that

there are a number of people who are concerned andready to advise you what to eat, how you should live, theexercises to do to lubricate your joints, etc. etc. Thenumber of formulae for healthy living is more than thenumber of people you tell your problems to — some havemore than one solution. If I followed all the instructions Ihave received I would be doing nothing else the whole day.Fortunately our forefathers have helped the human beingto evolve to recover from sickness and have passed on theDNA which has helped us to heal ourselves. It has takenmillions of years to learn to cope with the harshness whichexistence on this earth involves — living without electricityin the hot summer, the stench of rotting garbage, theblaring of the mikes to celebrate some netas birthday.

The Bible says “Unless you become like little childrenyou cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven” I am doing justthat. Like a child I am relearning to walk, to go up and downstairs, to get in and out of bed. My future salvation isassured as every time I am successful I thank God so thatmy whole life is now one long prayer of thanks to the Lord.

I know that these ailments will pass as the life spanhas been predicted to cross a hundred years. I am onlywaiting for the return of my doctor, who decided to go toUSA for her daughter’s wedding at this critical time.

Francis Lobo

'You can make a better world,'pope tells disadvantaged children

On Saturday morning the “Ode to Joy” rang out from ateenaged orchestra as Pope Francis entered a roompacked with 400 Italian school children from disadvan-taged homes. They waved and cheered as the Popespoke to them in simple terms about the importance oflight and love in a dark world.

Goa Diocese Launches‘Stop Suicide' HelplineThe Metropolitan Archdiocese of Goa and Daman has launched a round-

the-clock emergency suicide prevention helpline to proactively addressthe escalating suicide rates in the region.

“Life is given by God, and only he has the power to take it back,” said localarchbishop Filipe Neri Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão at the May 24 announce-ment of the “God Saves Life-line” initiative.

“In today's society, we need to offer hope to the people that God has createdthem in love and that He still loves them…and this hope is what 'God Saves Life-line,' is expected to offer.

” Archbishop Rosário Ferrão inaugurated the project by leading a prayer serviceand imparting his blessing while commissioning the initiative to the DiocesanCenter for Missionary Animation in Old Goa. Located about eight miles from thecapital city Panjim, the center is near the renowned Basilica of Bom Jesus thatholds a reliquary of St. Francis Xavier and draws daily an average of over fivethousand devotees and visitors.

“Life is important and its precious gift of God for we are created in His image andlikeness,” Fr. Dr. Mario Saturnino Dias, creator of the project and director for thecenter told CNA May 25.

“It's concerning to witness while reading daily newspapers reports the scourgeof modern times that people are undertaking extreme steps in committingsuicide,” he said, adding: “Every human being has also an inner urge to live andalso an urge to save life irrespective of caste, creed or religion.”

The director recounted that over the last two decades, the suicide rate in thecountry has been “mounting steadily.” Over 180,000 suicides were reported for2010 and claimed a younger population between the ages of 15 to 29 years.

Cardinals To Decide CanonizationDates On June 12

Vatican City: Cardinals who are inRome will gather around Pope Francisfor a consistory on June 12 to decideupon ?the date for the canonization ofsix future saints, including two Indians.

Zenit news agency reported that thecanonization dates would be decidedat the ordinary public consistory.

The Indians are Fr Kuriakose EliasChavara and Sister EuphrasiaEluvathingal, a member of the Congre-gation of the Mother of Carmel. The twoare already called Blessed, thepenultimate stage in the long-drawncanonization process.

Others in the list are Bishop GiovanniAntonio Farina (1803-1888) of Vicenza,Italy, founder of the Institute of the Sis-ters of Saint Dorothy, Daughters of theSacred Hearts, Fr Ludovico de Casoria(1814-1885), an Italian member of theOrder of Friars Minor and founder ofthe Congregation of the FranciscanSisters of Saint Elizabeth and Fr Nicolada Longobardi, Italian member of theOblate of the Order of Minims.

Pope Francis will also canonize AmatoRonconi (1225-1292), an Italian layper-son of the Third Order of St. Francis, who founded the Hospital-Hospice forPoor Pilgrims of Saludecio, now theBeato Amato Ronconi Nursing Home.

Blessed Kuriakose was the founder ofthe Congregation of the Carmelites of

Mary Immaculate and the Congrega-tion of Mother Carmel. He died in 1871at the age of 66. Sister Euphrasia wasborn six years after the saintly priest’sdeath and lived up to 1952.

With these two, India will have foursaints, three of them Kerala, a southernIndian state where Saint Thomas theApostle is believed to have preachedthe Gospel in the first century.

The first Indian saint is Gonsalo Garcia,a Franciscan friar, who died a martyr inJapan in 1597 at the age of 41. He wasborn in the western Indian coastal townof Vasai, near Mumbai. His feast is heldon the first Sunday nearest to the neaptide following Christmas in Vasai.

The second Indian saint is SisterAlphonsa of the Immaculate Concep-tion. The member of Franciscan ClaristCongregation died in 1946 aged 36 atBharananganam, near Palai in Kerala. She is the first woman saint from Indiaand first saint of the Syro-MalabarCatholic Church that traces its origin tothe apostle.

According to the priest, many suicidesalso go unreported.

The National Crime Records Bureau,Ministry of Home Affairs reports thatthe average suicide rate in Goa is 15.8per 100 thousand – above the NationalAverage of 11.4 – an “alarmingly dis-tressing” fact putting the state in tenthposition country-wide.

“To me saving one life is as importantas saving thousand lives,” Fr. Dias said.

“If somebody becomes aware of re-ceiving hope in hopelessness; findsopenness of love, care, affection, con-cern and positive energy, assistance ofqualified counselors a depressed lifesituation can bring optimistic change.”

He noted that the challenges youthface in India range from family poverty, drug abuse and alcoholism, failure inlove affairs, dowry disputes, rural illit-eracy, ignorance, and superstitions, agricultural challenges, to bankruptcyloans and many other causes.

Fr. Dias strongly emphasized the “im-portant of role of the parents” in up-bringing of their children.

He urged parents, “Teach your chil-dren to appreciate life and be trained toaccept gracefully the many frustrationswhich are part of life so that their toler-ance level is increased.”

Callers are assured of confidentialityand can also be provided help througha state-wide network of governmentservices like hospitals, law enforce-ment and legal bodies such as police, the fire department and associationslike Society of St. Vincent de Paul,Caritas and other Church bodies.

One would not have expected afurore over ex-communicationin the papacy of Pope Francis;

who has repeatedly been asking theclergy not to close doors, but to openup the Church to welcome even thosewith whom it may be seemingly inconflict with.

But the unthinkable has hap-pened. Martha and Gert Heizer, a laycouple, that are leaders of a churchreform group in Austria, have been ex-communicated. This has raised thehackles of reformist lay leaders acrossthe globe, especially of a group “Catho-lic Church Reforms International”(CCRIL), with which I am associated. As a consequence I am in the loop ofhundreds of emails from different partsof the world, expressing diverse views.Among the Indians in the loop are threevenerable doctors – Dr James Kottoor,Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala and Dr JohnDayal. I am not a doctor, and don’tnurse any grudge about it!

What is the furore all about? Is theCatholic Church again behaving like aFuhrer – a ruthless dictator? The al-leged transgression of the Heizers isthat they assumed the role of a priest, and “celebrated” the Holy Eucharist ontheir own. It is not clear if this was a one-off flash in the pan, or was it somethingthat they were doing regularly, andinviting others to participate. It is alsonot clear if the ecclesiastical authoritiesunder whose territorial jurisdiction theycome, took cognizance of the matter, issued warnings or sought explana-tions, before taking the extreme step ofex-communication (removal from theCatholic Church, and denial of the sac-raments). Hence I reserve comment onthis specific ex-communication.

However, this action has openedup a Pandora’s Box. On the one handwe have the particular circumstancesthat led to this act, and on the other isthe evolving mindset of many layper-sons that love the Church, but are notnecessarily in agreement with some ofits orthodoxy or orthopraxis.

So what led the Heizers to dowhat they did? Was it an act of open

defiance of ecclesiasticalauthority, a case of misplacedardour, or one of genuinepastoral concern? We can-not judge their actions be-cause we are not aware ofthe motive. One may heredigress to say that in a mur-der mystery the investigatorsfirst try to determine the motive behindthe crime.

However, from various reactionsemanating from Europe and America, some genuine concerns do arise. Thefirst is the acute shortage of priests inEurope, sometimes just one priest for10 parishes. In the reversal of roles ofthe erstwhile foreign missionaries, Eu-rope is now banking on priests fromIndia and Africa. Europeans do not feelat ease with the “imported” priests, who have a conservative mindset. Theirauthoritarian manner doesn’t fit intothe ethos of a participatory Europeanparish. Ironically, it is felt that youngpriests today have a pre-Vatican IImindset, something certainly not pe-culiar to Europe! It is even more preva-lent in our cultic Indian ethos.

This raises a fundamental ques-tion. What kind of vocations are weattracting to our seminaries? TheVatican II “Decree on Priestly Forma-tion” states, “careful enquiry should bemade concerning the rightness of in-tention and freedom of choice” (OT No6). These two factors cannot be pre-sumed. In the Abbott edition of theVatican II Documents that I have (the

first English translation),Alexander Carter, in his intro-duction to the Decree has thisto say: “A seminary is not alumber mill or a smelter. Itcannot take a raw youth and, after subjecting him to a fewapproved processes, turn outa neatly fashioned or keenly

honed priest”. Devoid of jargon, thismeans that no matter how much yourefine iron ore, you will end up with ironor steel, not gold or silver!

The root cause is not the priestsbeing churned out of our seminaries, but the quality (spiritual, emotional andintellectual) of the raw material enter-ing there. Once they enter the system(especially in India, where becoming apriest is considered a prestigious thing, and sometimes a support mechanismfor impoverished families) the elementof “freedom of choice” is severely cur-tailed. When pious, docile, traditional-ist youngsters, with no experience oflife, enter our clerical refineries; eventheir rightness of choice becomes sus-pect. So it is not the exit gate that weneed to watch, but the entry point. In itsinordinate haste for quantity in its semi-naries, the Church has compromisedgreatly on quality, and we are all thepoorer for it. There are no short cuts inthe Lord’s vineyard.

Granted that there is a dearth ofpriests, both in quality and quantity, does it give the Heizers, or anybodyelse, the right to hijack that role? Two

wrongs do not make a right. The Heizerswill have greatly erred if they have triedto assume priestly office, no matterwhat the circumstances. Such an actwould be considered a direct chal-lenge to the very foundation of theChurch on Apostolic Succession, andecclesiastical discipline. The Heizersseem to have mistaken their propheticrole for a priestly function. From OldTestament times the offices and rolesof prophets and priests were distinctlydifferent. Infact the prophets were of-ten at dalliance with both priest andking, the three arms of the people ofGod.

Rev Josef Neuner SJ, himself anexpert advisor to Vatican II, and coinci-dentally also Austrian, though based inIndia, wrote a small book “The Pro-phetic Role of the Laity”, that had agreat impact on me. He identified thefive characteristics of a prophet as (1)One who speaks in the name of theLord (2) His message is contextualised– specific, not generalized (3) He isconfronted by the power of evil (4) Hisonly weapon is the Word of God (5) Hislife is no longer his own. A prophettherefore must speak out clearly, basedon God’s Word, in a given context, andbe prepared for isolation and persecu-tion. Quite a tall order, but there it is. Ifindeed the Heizers feel that they arefulfilling a prophetic role, inspired bythe Holy Spirit, then they must be pre-pared to be misunderstood, and facethe consequences. This has happenedright through the history of the Peopleof God. However, this does not meanthat those supportive of their cause bemute spectators, if they perceive anyinjustice.

To be fair to all concerned, let usalso examine the process of ex-com-munication, as laid down in CanonLaw. I am no expert. Nevertheless, Ishare what I have studied. Book VII ofCanon Law deals at length on judicialprocesses in the Church. There are twokinds of ex-communication. One isferendae sententiae, that which is im-posed after the judgment of an ecclesialcourt; presumably after following a pre-scribed judicial process, and givingthe accused an opportunity to be heard. The second is latae sententiae, whichis automatically incurred on commit-ting a particular offence, “without inter-vention or judgment”! This latter goesagainst all norms of jurisprudence. InIndia we have inherited British jurispru-dence that is based on the premise thata person is innocent till proven guilty. Alatae sententiae ex-communication iscontrary to this norm.

This severe form of punishment isprescribed in the following cases – (1)Desecration of the Eucharistic species(Can 1367), (2) A physical assault onthe Pope (Can 1370), (3) A priest whogrants absolution in a case of adultery(Can 977 & 1378:1), which is not veryclear to me, (4) A bishop who conse-crates another as a bishop without pa-pal approval, and the person so conse-crated (Can 1382), (5) A confessor whobreaks the confessional seal of se-crecy (Can 1388), and (6) A personwho actually incurs an abortion (Can1398).

Other than the last instance, allthe others pertain to ecclesiastical au-thority or discipline. Only the last is apurely moral issue, which one needs todiscuss at length separately. One ofthe emails drew my attention to Canon

1318, which states that the greatestmoderation must be exercised in casesof latae sententiae ex-communication.There seems to be some anomaly here.If something is incurred automatically, without “judicial intervention”, thenwhere is the scope for discretion ormoderation?

In the light of the above the ques-tions that arise in the Keizers’ case are:Under what process and provisions ofCanon Law were they indicted? Werethey given an opportunity to be heard?Did they participate/ co-operate in thejudicial/ enquiry process, if any? Werethey given an opportunity to admit toperforming an act that goes against thevery essence of the sacraments? Didthey defy ecclesiastical authority anddeclare that they would press on re-gardless? If indeed so, then they can-not now cry “foul”. Before espousingtheir cause these questions need to beanswered. Whatever be the facts andcircumstances of the Heizer case, Ihave two critical points to make.

DO YOU KNOW?

WHAT IS AWINDOW SEAT?

A window seat is a seatingarea in an alcove or nookthat is lined with windows.

These seating areas have ro-mantic associations, as manypeople idealize the sense ofluxury and spare time that theysuggest. Typically, the seat isinstalled in an area with an at-tractive view, so that someoneseated in it can enjoy the beautyof the outdoors while working ona project that requires naturallight, such as knitting. Such seatsare also used for reading or sim-ply enjoying a respite from dailylife. Many homes are built withthem in mind, but it is also pos-sible to install one at relativelylow cost.

Birds of a feather flock together, all wise men think alike, and fools sel-dom differ ! It was a pleasant surprisethereofre to find fellow scribes like RevCedric Prakash SJ, Alfonso ElanjickalSSP, and George Menezes all in thesame issue of the Secular Citizen, to-gether with my own article.

Prakash quoted Pope Francis"Communications Day Message to lis-ten and learn from one another. On FalsePoll AffidavitsThe beleaguered Congress has

now stirred a hornet’s nest over theappointment of Smriti Irani’s appoint-ment to the post of HRD minister. The

issue at stake is not whether M/s Irani,a 12th standard pass, is qualified forthe coveted post but, because of thecontradictions and inconsistencies inher Lok Sabha poll affidavits of 2004and 2014. Such misleading and falsedeclarations in poll affidavits are of aserious nature and could well invitepenal action and disqualification. In thepresent case it has also come as amajor embarrassment to Mr Modi, whochose to appoint M/s Irani in prefer-ence to the highly qualified and eruditeMurli Manohar Joshi. However, this isnot a case without precedence. Wehave witnessed this even in Goa whereunqualified persons have held respon-sible posts allegedly on false affidavits, without facing disqualification. This isthe sad and disturbing side of politics.Nevertheless , it is not necessary thatone has to be an architect to hold thepost of Town Planning minister or anarmy man to be Defence minister. Aperson’s organizational skills are moreimportant.

Two Sides Of TheSame Coin?

It is both regrettable and an af-front to the Christian community thatrespected Goa Chief minister ManoharParrikar has chosen to club togetherFr. Cedric Prakash and Ram Sene’sMutalikk, as 2 sides of the same coin. FrCedric is a veteran and noted activist

based in Ahmedabad , championingthe cause of human rights , justice andpeace in Gujarat and other parts ofIndia. In recognition of his outstandingcontribution in the field, Fr Cedric hasbeen the recipient of several nationaland international awards. In 1995 hewas conferred the Kabir Puraskar awardby the President of India for promotingcommunal peace and harmony in thecountry. Later in 2006, Fr Cedric wasawarded the minority rights award bythe govt. of India. He is also the recipi-ent of the highest French civilian awardfor promoting and defending humanrights in India. It is therefore sad that hiswork in the human rights field has notbeen appreciated , misunderstood bysome, and even described as “ tryingto spread hatred using religion for thepurpose”. As a priest who has dedi-cated his life for the promotion of peaceand justice, it becomes difficult to ac-cept that Fr Cedric belongs to the samecategory of Mutalik and his men, whogo about beating up girls and marriedwomen and creating communal distur-bance in the country in the guise ofmoral policing.Mutalik now proposesto distribute swords to Hindu families inGoa to protect them against minorities.

Radical RethinkingRererence the article by Chotebhai

in the latest issue of the Secular Citizenunder the caption"Rahul must quit" Iwish to add my rejoinder as follows:

"The Congress party will have todo a radical rethinking on its dynastypolicy. The country does not wish tohave any more oligarchies or dynas-ties. In fact dynastic rule should beanathema in a democracy. The soonerthe Congress party realises this andnurtures grassroot leaders based onpersonal charisma and leadershipqualities, the better for the grand oldparty to rebound from such an elec-toral defeat. As it is the way up isdaunting steep and strenous"

DO YOU KNOW?

WHAT ISINTERTAINMENT?

Intertainment is a combinationof the words Internet and entertainment. The term has been

used since the early 1990s and isoften thought to been inspired bythe formation of the companyINTERTAINMENT Media Con-cepts & Licensing®. In the mod-ern sense, the word is not re-stricted to a single company. Itrefers to multiple ways in whichpeople amuse or entertain them-selves with services that areInternet-based. There are so manyways that people access Internetentertainment, it would be difficultto list them all, and this field con-tinues to grow with new develop-ment in technology that fuels theInternet. Intertainment includesbeing able to read a newspaperonline or to follow or create blogs.

The allegations made by the ChiefMinister of Goa Manohar Parrikar(as reported in some sections of

the media today), accusing me of“spreading religious discontent” areextremely mischievous and very unfor-tunate.

I visited Goa in March 2014 at theinvitation of the Catholic Council ofGoa and the focus of all my talks was(and which will continue to be) theConstitution of India, the values en-shrined in them and the fact that largesections of our people are deprived oftheir legitimate rights both in Gujaratand in other parts of India.

Article 19 of the Constitution gives methe right of freedom of speech andexpression. Apart from focusing on theConstitution, I have been consistent insaying that the Freedom of ReligionLaw enacted by the Government ofGujarat in 2003 goes against the letterand spirit of the Indian Constitutionparticularly Article 25 which guaran-tees every single citizen the right tofreely profess, practice and propagateone’s religion. It also goes againstArticle 18 of the Universal Declarationof Human Rights which gives one theright to freely change his religion orbelief to another.

Further, I have always questioned theGujarat model of “development” which

only caters to a section of society. There is sufficient research studies andstatistical data to prove that what isbeing flaunted are half-truths and myths;social indicators of large sections ofthe poor and marginalized very stronglybelie the development of Gujarat. It iscommon knowledge that Gujarat hasalways been a fairly industrialized Statesince the early seventies. It is not a“miracle” that has happened in the lastten years or so.

I have never used or abused anyreligion to create any ‘discontent’. Myclosest associates and friends belongto all religions and particularly from themajority community. I have always beenan advocate for communal harmonyand peace but I do so within the frame-work of justice and human rights for all.I have never attacked or said anythingagainst another’s religious beliefs. ThatCM Parrikar has compared me withone of his ilk speaks volumes of hismindset and the fact that fascism isgaining more and more ground in thecountry.

On April 9th 2014, I had already sentout a response to CM Parrikar on someof his earlier allegations against me.There is nothing which I have saidwhich is not true or which cannot besubstantiated with concrete data.

Statement by Fr. Cedric Prakash on theallegations made against him by the Goa CM

Candidates, Crimeand Corruption

Forty of the 44 ministers in theModi govt are crorepatis with thewealthiest being Finance minis-

ter Arun Jaitley. That’s fine, but theannoying aspect is that about 30% ofthe ministers have criminal cases pend-ing against them (Times of India, May28th 2014).

The Association for DemocraticReforms (ADR) analysed the self-swornaffidavits of 44 of the 46 ministers in-cluding PM Narendra Modi. Of the 44ministers, 13 ministers (nearly 30%)have declared criminal cases againstthem; while eight or 18% face seriouscriminal charges including attempt tomurder, communal disharmony, kid-napping and electoral violations.

In the All –India situation regard-ing MPs elected to the Lok Sabha fromtheir respective quotas, Bihar tops with27 MPs or 67% followed by Maharashtra30 (64%) , Andhra 20 (48%) and UPwith 28 (35%).

The general party wise position ofIPC cases percentage wise also showa disturbing trend with RJD-100, ShivSena -78, NCP- 66, Left-64, JDU-50,JDP- 38, BJP-34, Cong-28, and theoverall average-36%.

Criminality in politics breeds cor-ruption and nepotism and will not beconducive for ‘clean governance’. How-ever, the Modi govt means business, for it has set out to curb corruption inthe ‘rural job scheme’. The poor andthe deprived need to be elevated in thecommunity and their dignity as humanbeings restored.

One also hopes that the long-pending discrimination against SC andST Christians will also be adequatelyaddressed. They fully deserve their due,Constitutional recognition and rightsand our respect and acceptance —“Do not be haughty, but associate withthe lowly—Do not let the downtroddenbe put to shame” (Romans 12:16—Psalm 74:21) .

Yours in the Candidature of Christ!

Vatican City:

The Pontifical Yearbook has published all figures relating toChurch life around the world.

The volume is published annually andcollects together data from the HolySee’s central offices.

This year’s figures are of particularinterest because they refer to the firstyear of Francis’ pontificate. He waselected Pope on 13 March 2013. Thefigures relating to the “official” life ofthe Church – the legal-institutionalaspect that is – include the period thatruns from March last year to 22 Febru-ary 2014.

Two new episcopal sees, an eparchy,an apostolic exarchate and an archi-episcopal exarchate were establishedin this period and a territorial prelaturewas elevated to the status of diocese.

The data regarding faithful and other

members of the Church refer to 2012,so there is a two year gap between thatdate and the date of publication.

The Catholic Church is currently di-vided into 2,981 ecclesiastical districts, dioceses or other kinds of institutions.

The number of people who are beingbaptized is constantly growing. In theperiod between 2005 and 2012, thenumber of baptized people around theworld rose from 1115 to 1229 million,an increase of 10.2 per cent . If wecompare this to the world population’srate of growth in the same period, wesee that this has gone from 6, 46 to 7,02 billion. So Catholic presence in theworld has risen slightly, from 17.3 percent to 17.5 per cent. But this growthvaried greatly according to geographi-cal area and so the total figure is differ-ent. Europe’s results are the worst.

Although it is home to 23 per cent of theworld’s Catholic community (2012), itis by far the least dynamic area, withnumbers of baptized rising at a meagrerate of just over 2 per cent. The pres-ence of Catholics in the region amountsto about 40 per cent.

Africa is the continent that is witnessingthe greatest growth; this probably helpsexplain the fresh outbreaks of violence

against Christians and Catholics byIslamic extremist groups.

Globally, Africa is undoubtedly the con-tinent where growth is most notable. The rate at which the number of Africa’sCatholics (almost 199 million in 2012)has risen, is almost double that of Asia(29%) and far higher than the popula-tion growth rate in that same period oftime.

The balance between continents haschanged hugely. The Catholic pres-ence in Africa is stronger (the numberof African Catholics has risen from13.8 per cent in 2005 to 16.2 per centof the total number of the world’s Catho-lics in 2012).

Europe’s Catholics, however, continueto drop in number: from 25.5 per centin 2005 their number has fallen to 23.3per cent in 2012. But Asia’s Catholicsare also on the rise. Asia accounts forover 60 per cent of the world popula-tion and Asian Catholics account forabout 11 per cent of the population. 49per cent of the world’s baptized Catho-lic population is American, a relativemajority. The number of Catholics pera hundred inhabitants in Oceania isstable, accounting for 0.8 per cent ofthe global catholic population.

‘Character and Consciousness’

According to Indian programming the man of character isone who is not a rebel, who

lives according to tradition, scriptures. One should adjust to society; bow downto vested interest, to status quo. TheIndian mind believes in collectivity ithas no respect for the individual.

The Indian mind is programmedto be that of a slave, it is not ready tofunction in freedom. If there is nobodyto dictate to it, if there is nobody to bossit about. Then the Indian mind knowsno way to function. It has no innerguidance. The best results will comefrom appointing a leader at the onsetbecause that gives the group someform of hierarchy. How does a leadertake everybody along, without causingdisturbance? Conflict is unavoidable.Protest is to be overlooked to progressto step two. One of the best ways ofjudging the quality and ability of a leaderis by looking at the levels of loyalty theyinspire from their people. Getting theirpeople to follow them through the goodtimes and even more importantly thetough times is the hallmark of a greatleader. And to get people to followthem when things are not going wellthey have to make them want to staywith them on the journey. In other wordsthey need their people to be totallyloyal to the cause and to them as indi-vidual and that is where the BJP sawthru and projected a leader and wonwith absolute majority. There was an-other party too that had the same inten-tion of good governance and leader-ship but their methods have not paidoff.

The Congress has been ruling thecountry for most part of our indepen-dence. They have dominated, dictated, guided forced a certain discipline inevery possible way, but that disciplinecomes from the outside and the mo-ment the outside agency that was cre-ating the discipline is removed the In-dian is at a loss. He has poor character.Character is imposed by outside agen-cies, society, state, industrial growth, development. When there is no hierar-chical distinction, it causes peer rela-

tionships to be more ambiguous, andpeople want to avoid conflict. Frompsychology, we know that human be-haviors serve fundamental needs. Wehave the need for competence andknowledge to bring achievement, theneed for advancement and the needfor affiliation with people. The questionis: How do people navigate the rela-tionships they have at work or aroundthem to address these needs? We be-lieve that people want to move up butchoose to do it very carefully. Without aleader, a lot of time is wasted withmutual deference but eventually a hier-archy will form perhaps after the firstdefeat that avoids ambiguity about whois in charge which leads to creatingefficient work groups that get tasksdone

Consciousness is individual, itcomes through meditation. Nobody canimpose consciousness on you, youhave to discover it and that is what thepeople of India did weighing the aboveoptions – they voted the present in-cumbent government of the Congressout and gave the new incumbent gov-ernment of the BJP an absolute major-ity so that the government can be totali-tarian, with absolute power for goodgovernance and leadership and for alllawlessness to disappear.

If you impose something uponour people they are very law- abiding. For 200 years the English ruled Indiaand found them to be very law-abiding.Lawlessness was never a problem be-fore. But these few decades of freedomhave seen India falling apart, becom-ing a chaos – something which looksstrange if you don’t understand theroot cause. The root cause is that free-dom is absolutely strange to Indianprogramming. India needs a totally dif-ferent kind of government. Democracyis an import idea. In democracy peer-to-peer relationships have a lot of am-biguity because there is no authoritystructure. Think of the common M.B.A.case study group where five strangersare put together. When no one is put in

charge, each person is reticent to stepup and be a leader. They think, if theytake charge, no one will want to befriends with them, and they fear thegroup will punish them. So you'll hear alot of deference and hedging like, "I'mnot sure if this is a good idea," or"Maybe we could try doing it this way, what do you think?"

For all the egalitarian talk, peoplereally like dictatorship. It is extremelyfunctional in order to complete tasks. Iam not a supporter of dictatorship. I amfor democracy, but democracy is pos-sible only if we can prepare the groundfor it. The parliamentary system thathas been imposed upon India is soforeign to the Indian mind that it cannotfunction. You can see it in the Indianparliament – the behavior of the mem-bers is so childish. They are continu-ously quarreling, fighting. No work atall happens in the Indian parliament. And the opposition is for theopposition’s sake - a sheer waste oftime and energy.

A recent example is the presentopposition ridiculing the newly ap-pointed HRD minister about her quali-fication. While the virtues of a greateducation can never be discounted, there are countless shining examplesof people without collage degrees whohave gone on to change the world forthe better.

Ten years down the line, it won’tmatter which collage one went to orhow much one scored. Don’t we knowwhat qualities matter on the stage oflife? All that goes into building one’scharacter or personality are acquiredin the course of day to day life and notby scoring high marks in examinations.

A man of character in India is onlya slave. Because he is obedient, he isrespected – the more obedient you arethe more you will be respected. But theobedient person is really a slave, hehas no guts, he has no consciousness,he cannot say “no” hence his “yes” isalso impotent. You can see it around -People feeling that their whole life is

empty, has no meaning.

This story is about a beautiful, expensively dressedlady who complained to her psychiatrist that she feltthat her whole life was empty, it had no meaning.

So, the lady went to visit a counselor to seekout happiness.

The counselor called over the old lady whocleaned the office floors.

The counselor then said to the rich lady “I’mgoing to ask Mary here to tell you how she foundhappiness. All I want you to do is listen to her.”

So the old lady put down her broom and sat ona chair and told her story:

“Well, my husband died of malaria and threemonths later my only son was killed by a car.

I had nobody… I had nothing left.I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat,I never smiled at anyone, I even thought of

taking my own life. Then one evening A LITTLE KITTEN FOL-

LOWED me home from work.Somehow I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten

in. I got it some milk, and the kitten licked the plateclean.

Then it purred and rubbed against my leg andfor the first time in months, I smiled.

Then I stopped to think, if helping a little kittencould make me smile, maybe doing something forpeople could make me happy.

So the next day I baked some biscuits and tookthem to a neighbor who was sick in bed.

” Every day I tried to do something nice forsomeone.

It made me so happy to see them happy.Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps

and eats better than I do.I’ve found happiness, by giving it to others “.When she heard that the rich lady cried. She had everything that money could buy, but

she had lost the things which money cannot buy.“The beauty of life does not depend on how

happy you (government) are;Rather it depends on how happy others (we

people) can be because of you (government)…”

And that is what the new government voted topower with absolute majority has promised allof us – with their slogan “Happy days are hereagain”. We look forward to their reducing therates of petrol, diesel, power, taxes which inturn will have a chain effect on the reduction ofrates in vegetables, consumer goods, etc.

(Contd.. from p. 15)

Dear Narendrabhai,You missed two opportunities at the Swearing-In. (a) Youshould have taken OATH OF TRANSPARENCY to break freefrom the British Legacy of Oath of Secrecy, the root cause ofCorruption and Bad Governance. (b) In 5 minutes OathTaking ceremony should have been over with you at themike, others standing where they were seated, the Presidentsaying I (you repeating your name and each Minister repeat-ing his/her) and then you all taking Oath collectively. Theremaining time should have been used to deliver yourMaiden Speech to spell out what your Govt stands for.

I am adding more points below since you have imple-mented my some suggestions like: Do not take thoseabove 75 in your Cabinet.

Now Work on my following suggestions and I am ready towork with you to make India Numero Uno in the world.1.. All Religion World Pilgrim Centre in Ayodhya to end the

Hindu-Muslim divide.2.. Peace Memorials rather than War Memorials.3.. SAARC Union with common currency, open borders,

common language - Hindustani.4.. Transfer Military Budget to Holistic Development of India,

SAARC region.5.. One Family, One Job and Roti, Pani, Kapda, Makan,

Toilets first. Rather than mobile phones and failed Nanocar project.

6.. Delink Jobs from Degrees.7.. IIT/IIM grads must work for minimum 5 years in India

before going abroad. And every year they must spendone month for next 5 years to serve people of India.

8.. Doctors/Civil Engineers/Lawyers must spend 6 monthsfor classroom and 6 months in fields every year -- sotheory matching with practice for proper development ofIndia.

9.. Reduce Bureaucracy and Hire and Fire Policy for Bureau-cracy.

10. Judicial Commission to Select, Appoint, Train, Promote,Take Disciplinary Action against High Court and Su-preme Court Judges and Retire them if found corrupt.Because corruption in the judiciary has reached nadir.Atleast corrupt politicians can be defeated in elections(like we have done just now), but what about corrupt IAS/IPS and Judges?

As your Elder Brother (I was born in April 1950), let me guideyou... If you trust me, you will become a world leader. Therefore do NOT hesitate to phone so that we can meetforthwith, one to one.

15. IBC is interested only in wealthcreation (profiteering) for themselvesand have no attitude for innovation tocreate new gadgets, equipment/ma-chines, processes, which are funda-mental to economic development of acountry and to be ahead of other coun-tries. Indians are perceived to be mak-ing some new drug molecules and ITsoftware. Can any of our companiesequal Chinese companies in manufac-turing machines, gadgets, chemicalsor even big river, power projects? IBCcan only think of acquiring (some timeshastily, because they do not knowwhere to use their excess cash) busi-nesses abroad instead of innovating athome. Some of the IBC cannot evenrun them efficiently and so sell themoff. They blame (will continue to do so,even if there is a change post 16th May)the government for all their evils.

16. In India we have both wholesaleand retail corruption. The former is atpolicy levels, involving politicians andbabus in ministries of the central/stategovernments and large businesshouses. This type hurts economy hav-ing far reaching effects on it. The retailtype is at local authority levels and ithurts a common man the most. Theformer is most dangerous for the coun-try as a whole and it is in the hands ofIBC. to stop it. If the wholesale corrup-tion reduces, the retail one will follow it.

17. In most western countries, contracting companies/contractorscontribute a lot to the economy andwell-being, by supplementing effortsof larger companies/governments, indeveloping new products/services, in-frastructure projects & so on. They arerespected. In India, contractors (a setof IBC) are strange creatures, go-in-between the government (babus &politicians) and other large companies,to do lousy work and promote corrup-tion. Examples: bad roads construc-

tion/maintenance, poorly constructedhouses and what not. Their work needsto be checked and then only paid for.

18. Why do IBC need famous actor/actresses, sportsmen & such persons(so-called brand ambassador, an MBAhype) in their ads to promote theirproducts? These persons are any wayfilthy rich and become richer from earn-ings from the ads by IBC. Instead, IBCcan employ less famous, but personshaving good acting talent/skill/looks,needing to pay less, reducing cost ofthe ads (ad-spend) and thereby reduc-ing cost of their products & servicesand pass price reduction to customers. This will also mean equitable/inclusivedistribution of wealth to more needypersons.

19. IBC also practices to give false, misleading information in the mediaabout their products to stay ahead ofcompetitors. Look at ads of washingmachines, detergents, shampoos, skinproducts, toothpaste & what not, claim-ing to perform no where near real per-formance. Is this not cheating, unfair totheir fellow-beings?

20. By making babus & politicianscorrupt, IBC have encouraged them tomake complicated laws & rules, mak-

ing it difficult to business in India. Now,IBC is calling on the government tosimplify laws & rules, to simplify doingbusiness in India. Is this not strange?

Large corporations (India Inc.or Corporate India, business houseslike Tata, Birla, Reliance, HUL, manymore and their associations, like CII,FICCI, Assocham, just to name a few),have to take a lead in reducing the evilsof in-discipline, immorality, irresponsi-bility and profiteering, by emulatingthoughts in the above paragraphs.Medium and small companies/groups,babus and politicians will then fall inline. After freeing India from shacklesof British empire, IBC has now an im-portant role to play in freeing Indiansfrom shackles of all aforesaid evils. IBChave to recognize that reforms are nota monopoly of the governments. It ishigh time that IBC reform themselvesto become like JN Tata, GD Birla, KNBajaj and many such erstwhile patriot-businessmen to lift Indian economyand reduce poverty in India.

IBC should also recognize thateven ”Abki Baar Nayi Sarkar” (aboutwhom they are gung-ho and from whomthey expect a lot to happen) cannotsucceed or even do much for thecountry, unless IBC change theirmindset, for the benefit of India, ofwhom IBC is integral part.

You already know that failure is acrucial and almost always necessary part of the path to success.

However, there’s more to failure thanjust learning from your mistakes -- there’sowning up to them, too. Sometimesfailure will come because of your ownmistakes, sometimes it won’t, but re-gardless of the reason something didn’twork out, it’s important that you own theproblem.

There are serious long-term implicationsfor not owning up to your mistakes, because being an entrepreneur meansyou’re participating in a lifestyle that isdesigned for the long run. Your reputa-tion is your business and while no oneexpects you to be perfect, everyoneexpects you to be honest. Here are waysthat owning your mistake will make youa powerful entrepreneur in the long runand why:

1. Be accountable, it demonstratesyou’re responsible. When you make a mistake, be preparedto take accountability for it. Reasonablepeople realize when a mistake has beenmade and more often than not, owningup to it solves the problem. Not owningup to it adds fuel to a spark and ignitesa problem you may not be able to con-tain later. When a delivery is late, whenyour inventory system screws up, whenyou drop the ball and completely forgetan important deadline or phone call, don’t try to deny it. As soon as yourealize it’s you that’s dropped the ball, don’t make excuses.

2. Be honest, it shows you have integ-rity. It’s so easy to point fingers whenthings go wrong or even to not speak upand hope that no one notices the error. However, blame and omission are noteffective leadership tools for any entre-preneur who wants to stay in the gamelong. What kind of example does thatexhibit for your team and what kind of

reputation are you building if your clientfigures out that there’s a problem? Bybeing proactive about the problem andhonestly claiming your errors, you’reactually very likely to endear your staffand customers to you even more.

Everyone makes mistakes. Literally ev-eryone. Odds are good as long as mis-takes are not the norm for you, peoplewill be appreciative and lenient whenyou come at them with honesty. You’llalso build up trust because everyoneknows how hard it is to come forwardand own your errors.

3. Be up front, it shows you’re relat-able. So you made a mistake, you tookpersonal accountability for it and youplan to be honest about it -- but how doyou approach the injured party? Gothrough this three-step process for tak-ing accountability the right way.

First, when you realize you dropped theball, figure out how to expedite a solu-tion. You may have to get creative if it’sa deadline that has been missed, butfigure out how you can deliver on youroriginal promise in some way as soon aspossible. Next, contact the person orpeople who are going to be impacted bythe mistake. Let them know first that amistake was made. You don’t need toget into all the details because that canquickly sound like excuses, just let themknow the problem. Then present themwith the solution you already devisedand see if that makes amends. If it does, great! If it doesn’t, see if there’s anynegotiating to be done to find an agree-able solution. Finally, you need to followup after the solution you’ve providedhappens.

It’s necessary for you to go above andbeyond to own up to your mistakes. Afollow-up call or visit will set things rightand ensure your customer or clientknows they are valuable.

Owning Your MistakesWill Make You Powerful

One of the most illustrious sons of theChurch in India, Blessed Kuriakose EliasChavara has been variously describedas the guiding light to believers andnon-believers alike, a good shepherd,s e l f l e s s l ycommitted to thecare of his sheep, aman of moralintegrity and a pillarthat supported the Catholic Churchbecause of the zeal he evinced in itsexpansion and in the protection of theFaith. Written in a commendablyreadable style, a life like his cannot butbe a source of guidance and support forpeople of all times and places.

Father Thomas Kochumuttom, who has done his higher studies in IndianPhilosophy and Comparative Religionbesides having a PhD from LancasterUniversity, avers that Blessed Kuriakosewas a spiritual luminary of the 19th centurywho, with prophetic vision, triggered acomprehensive process of spiritual andsocial renewal in Church and societyalike in Kerala. At his beatification, PopeJohn Paul II, himself now a saint, said:“This man advanced to great heights ofholiness through his wholeheartedcooperation with the grace of God.....Chavara laboured generously for therenewal and enrichment of Christianlife. His deep love for Christ filled himwith apostolic zeal and made himespecially careful to promote the unityof the Church” [p 13].

In keeping with the depth of hispersonal holiness, Chavara’s activitiesmarked a significant contribution to theSyro-Malabar Liturgy and devotion tothe Eucharist and consolidating thefundamental role of the family in the lifeof Church and society. A man of God, aradical contemplative in action, therewas within him a divine fire burning that

amply equipped him with Christian zealand enthusiasm. In fact, there have beenmany instances in his life when he wasseen to be deeply immersed incontemplation before the BlessedSacrament, often shedding tears. It wasobvious that even in the midst ofstrenuous activity Chavara maintaineda hotline with God!

The book shows how, integratedin his multifaceted personality, is a fineblend of jnana yoga which elevates one’sintelligence and freedom to the divinepresence; karma yoga which motivatesone to be involved deeply in action inservice to humanity; nishkama karma,

unselfish actionsattuned to furtherpronouncing thegreater glory ofGod; and bhakti

yoga which enables one to make all ofone’s wisdom and acts of service a totalself-oblation to the divine, all steeped inprayer.

A senior priest named JacobPalakunnel relates that the day beforethe titular feast of a certain parish, wherePrior Chavara too was present, thepreacher of the day failed to turn up. Sothey decided to request Father Prior topreach the homily and looked for him.Apparently missing, someone who knewhim personally said: “Look for him eitherin front of the Blessed Sacrament in thechurch, or in the cemetery.” Indeed, they found him praying in the cemetery.

The year before his death Chavarawas under rest and treatment in hismonastery at Koonammavu. Disputesand quarrels were still going on in theparish of Anackal in relation to thePortuguese Patronage issue. Theauthor, a great lover of the spiritual legacyof Blessed Chavara, tells of how allefforts to reconcile the rival groupshaving failed, the parish chiefsapproached Father Prior, saying: “It isenough if you just come for peace to berestored.” The Prior, who exemplifiedChristian love and forgiveness, wentwith them and peace was restored!

All in all, a book that makes thereader literally look forward to theforthcoming canonization of BlessedKuriakose Elias Chavara.

A man in China has built a battery-powered scooterwith a suitcase which not only helps in the transportation of his belongings but also himself, a media

report said Thursday. He Liangcai, a resident of Central China’s Hunan

province, demonstrated his invention at the Changsha trainstation, from where he rode to his home a few kilometersaway, Global Times reported.

The suitcase scooter weighs seven kg and is capableof carrying two people. It can travel up to 20 km per hour fora distance of 50-60 km, reports NDTV.

It also comes equipped with GPS navigation and aburglar alarm.

Since it is battery operated, it needs to be charged. He, originally a farmer, said that it took him 10 years to

invent the suitcase scooter. The vehicle is made from a stripped-down electric

scooter which is embedded into a suitcase. The riderstrides the rectangular luggage and grabs handlebars thatcontrol the throttle, breaks and lights.

He is already a recognized inventor as he has won aprize at a US-based inventors awards ceremony in 1999 forthe invention of an innovative car safety system.

He said that he got the idea of the suitcase scooterwhen he forgot his luggage on his way to accept the awardin the US.
