BOIPATONG. - Police are investigating a caseof reckless and negligent driving after a truckcapsized at the Boipatong robots on Friday. It looked like a feeding frenzy after the truck

overturned. Scrap-hunters flocked to the scenelike locusts to a summer harvest. They waitedexpectantly as the truck-driver was taken careof by paramedics.

The traffic department responded to the sce-ne quickly before the scrap-hunters could re-ach the capsized truck.Police spokesperson Constable Thembeka

Koago says the case is being investigated.“We have opened a case of recklessness andnegligent driving. The victim has been treatedas he sustained minor injuries,” says Koago.Truck-driver Ndlebe says he lost control of

the truck due to scrap-hunters who climb ontothe truck when most truck drivers reach theintersection.“I lost control of the truck because I was

anticipating the scrap-hunters who alwaysstand by the side of the road to steal scrap. It was unfortunate for me that I capsized andsustained minor injuries,” says Ndlebe, a 34-year-old Free State driver. The scrap was reloaded onto another truck

while the scrap-hunters were waiting for thetraffic to leave the scene so they could get so-mething.One scrap-hunter said: “People judgewhat we do, but we don’t care what peoplethink and say about us. At the end of the day,a man has to do what a man has to do to survi-ve.”

BOITUMELO. - Pastor Abigail Toodi, Gau-teng provincial prayer coordinator of Operati-on Christmas Child Samaritan’s Purse’,brought smiles to the children of the HolyPentecostal Apostolic Church, Boitumelo, when she donated bibles and boxes full of par-cels.Pastor Toodi said Christ is the foundation

and children are gifts fromGod. After presen-ting the children with gifts, she made themaware that the outside world is always thin-king about how children are raised and takencare of in South Africa. ‘The outside worldis glad to be associated with theMzansi child-

ren to show love, dedication and care.’ Shesaid giving is part of winning children backfor God. Church leader the Reverend IsaacHlalele said that, as part of celebrating Inter-national Children’s Month, two books wereissued by OCC, namely ‘The Greatest Gift’and ’TheGreatest Journey.’With these booksthey will be able to minister to their peers,he said. The books teach about the creation.`The church is very happy and touched to seeorganisations taking care of the children. Thiscouldmotivate them to grow up in the church, also to encourage their peers that there’s lifein Christ. The Holy Pentecostal appreciatesthe love shown by OCC.

SEBOKENG. - It has become clear that thefight against drug abuse in society can only bewon if the community, police and governmentofficials work together.

The Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre was packedbeyond capacitywhenmembers of the commu-nity on Thursday honoured the invitation ofGautengMEC Social Development, FaithMa-zibuko to the Annual International DayAgainst Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The day was celebrated in conjunction withSedibeng District Municipality, The ToughestYoung Minds, the South African NationalCouncil on Alcoholism and Drug Dependenceand different non-governmental organisationsin the Vaal.

The attendance volume alone proved thatthere is a crucial need for the fight to continue,as those who attended were affected in diffe-rent ways. The Sedibeng region was named asa problem area as it has a high number of drugaddicts, especially those addicted to the com-mon ‘nyaope’ drug.

Mazibuko says, “It is very important for thecommunity to take action, especially againstdrug dealers who are busy killing our youth byselling them the nyaope drug. The governmentcannotwin this fight on its own. The communi-ty needs to provide us with the information weneed to put drug-dealers away.”

Acting Sebokeng Police Station Comman-der Colonel Jacob Manamela states there aremany complaints about drug suppliers andusers who are left to go free, but this is dueto lack of evidence to prove the case. “We needhard proof for our cases to be strong and I belie-ve that the community can help us in this re-gard. I would like to urge you to work togetherwith the Community Policing Forum (CPF) sothat we can begin to put the dealers away forgood.”

Manamela adds that since nyaope’s classifi-cation as a drug, they have had 25 convictionsand 80 arrests of drug users.

The Brazil World Cup produced an incredi-ble display compared to four years ago herein South Africa. Great goals are scored bygreat players andyou can’t ask formore. Thisis the biggest showpiece in the world, in thecalendar of world football - the World Cup.

The only disappointment is the perfor-mance of African countries even though thelikes of Nigeria and Algeria came throughin the knockout stages. Yes, many might saythe two countries have made history by pro-ceeding to the last 16, but the real questionis: How far have they gone?

As for Ghana, Cameroon and Ivory Coast, theywere in Brazil for a holiday as they offe-red little in the field of play. Cameroon wasa disgrace to African football. The only thingtheworldwill remember them for is their un-professional behaviour. They deserve to beout of the tournament. These are the Africancountries that used to ‘rule’ in many Europe-an countries during Roger Milla’s era. Shoo-ting From The Hip can still remember the1990 Cameroon that shocked the world withits performance in the field of play. The cur-

rent Cameroon team should be ashamed of it-self for putting the country on the world map- for all the wrong reasons.

The performance of the African continenthas something to do with the development offootball, taking into consideration countriessuch as the IvoryCoast. Most IvoryCoast play-ers were at the wrong side of their age, suchas Drogba.

Taking nothing away from Drogba. He pla-yed a significant role in Ivory Coast’s qualifiergames, but Shooting From The Hip believesthat it is also time for him to call it a day ininternational football. The same can be said

about South African Football even thoughwe didn’t qualify for theWorld Cup. The agefactor is themain problemwith BafanaBafa-na.

My exact point is that African countriesmust do some introspection into the develop-ment of football on this continent.

The question asked by Shooting From TheHip is -When will an African country winthe World Cup? Shooting From The Hip isof the opinion that African countries werejust happy to finish in the last 16 of theWorldCup. In 2010 we hosted this biggest worldshowpiece, but even as a hosting nation wecouldn’t proceed to the next round. It wasembarrassing for the country as there was lotof expectation.

Itwas an opportunity forAfrican countriestomake their presence felt in the 2010WorldCup, but we failed dismally. How long willAfrican countries have to go back to the dra-wing board - every time we fail to impressin major tournaments like the World Cup?

* We don’t need ‘the drawing board’ -what we need is the ‘training’ board.

Wedon’t need drawingboard but ‘training board’ Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - What Matome FransMatlogo (51) has forgotten about basketballothers still need to learn. As a skilled player, coach and administrator – with more than twodecades of experience under his belt - Fransis a force to be reckoned with within the De-partment of Sport on the Vaal Triangle Cam-pus of the North-West University (NWUVaal).By coaching the campus’ volleyball, bas-

ketball and chess teams, he moulded them in-to competitors of note. He is passionate aboutsport and the role he is playing towards tur-ning the NWU Vaal into a sporting campus.“There are very few competitive leagues

in the Vaal Triangle region and therefore I ta-ke it upon myself to develop the necessaryinfrastructure,” says Matlogo, who adds thathe plans to liaise with the Department of Edu-cation in this regard.According to Matlogo the current men’s

team is very strong, but he is experiencingdifficulty in organising a women’s team – thelatter due to students completing their studiesor leaving the area to pursue other interests. The campus currently competes in the Gau-teng Universities Basketball League, but didnot qualify for the USSA Championships dueto changes made in the league stipulations.“The stipulations changed during the peri-

od when students were on recess and, as aresult, we could not implement the new regu-lations in time,” says Matlogo.A recruitment drive is currently underway

in the Pretoria league to address the shortco-mings in the team.Matlogo’s life changed dramatically in

1983 when a knee injury signalled the endof his athletics career. During this time a for-mer journalist from Pretoria News introducedhim to basketball and the rest is – as they say- history. In 1996 he was the first-ever blackbasketball coach to win the national champi-onship.During his illustrious 23-year career, Mat-

logo won a total of 35 championships and ser-ved as the national supporting coach duringthe All Africa Games and the Africa Cup. Healso completed a Diploma in Sport Manage-ment at the then Randse Afrikaanse Universi-teit (RAU).“My goal is to see NWU Vaal ranked as

one of the top five basketball teams in thecountry. I would also like to start a basketballacademy and realise my dream ofsetting up a bursaryfund for talented anddeserving stu-dents,” he conclu-des.

Player, coach,administrator -he’s everything
