The meeting apparently had no directi- on and this angered both the community and the councillor; emotions ran high. Residents started threatening the coun- cillor with a riot the following day. To de- monstrate their frustration they took to the streets on Monday morning, barricaded ro- ads with rocks and burning tyres. They claim that the councillor does not actively engage with all parts of the community and other effective leaders. It also appears that the lack of service delivery triggered the riot and community members allege that the councillor told them to continue with their illegal protest. The aim of the riot ap- parently was to demand better roads, a sports facility for the youth, and water pi- pes. Residents also claim that the council- lor does not empower, support or engage with them. They claim that their leader ra- rely calls meetings and keeps no record of any issues they discuss and has no office where residents can raise their concerns. Ward 38 Councillor Robby Lehlake dis- misses these allegations. He says, “ I called a meeting in order to inform the communi- ty about service delivery, IDP and finance. “The problem started when I addressed them about the one tarred road. “They dis- missed the meeting saying they wanted to speak to the Mayor and demanded that all streets should be tarred and not just one.” The residents vow to continue with the pro- test until their demands are met. VEREENIGING. - Ndumiso Hadebe was announcedas the winner of SABC 1’s One Day Leader competi-tion on Sunday. The show that aired for 13 weeksshowed how admirably the 21-year-old executed thevarious challenges given to him. Hadebe captivatedviewers with his confidence and charisma.

Many will agree that he deserved this hard-earnedtitle because of the leadership qualities he displayedas well as his passion for community issues, whichcomes naturally to him as he is the youth leader ofhis church and has been involved in many communityprojects that empower the youth. Sedibeng Municipa-

lity together with the South African Youth Council(SAYC) held a campaign on Saturday in honour ofSouth Africa’s one-day leader. The campaign started atMark Park in Vereeniging and continued at Vaal Mallin Vanderbjilpark. According to SAYC chairperson Tu-mi Mochawe, the reason behind the campaign was toencourage people to show their support for the outstan-ding leader by voting. “We knew he would win, that’swhy we were behind him all the way,” Mochawe says.Ndumiso expressed his gratitude towards all his suppor-ters. “I am grateful and humbled by the support I recei-ved, I hope to serve the community to the best of myability,” says Hadebe.

Tired of annual protests

It has grown to be a norm that all overthe country at this time of the year com-munities engage in service delivery pro-tests.Year in, year out, we are confronted

with the sight of burning tyres, looting ofstores, loadshedding and unyielding pro-

tests. I am reminded of this when I look atthis week’s front page of demonstrations inZone 6 on Monday. Rightfully so! Yes,rightfully so; the people are demanding whatthey should have been receiving for ages, which is decent service delivery. However, their blocking of roads and burning oftyres should not be endorsed. A perma-nent solution to the issues they are rai-sing should be agreed upon so that thesame situation does not repeat itself. Many communities resort to damagingproperty to show their frustration andanger. This should not be allowed be-cause once the situation returns to nor-mal they will be demanding the very sa-me property they damaged, re-startingthe very same cycle of protest from

scratch. We are not in the apartheid yearswhere hooliganism was mostly the order ofthe day. What the powers-that-be need todo is engage the members of the communi-ty and allow them to raise their concernsIf this does not happen then, even by the

year 2090, our great-grandchildren will stillbe taking to the streets , still perpertuatingthis cycle of futility. Isn’t it time that a stopis put to this for the sake of continuity? Ithink it is, I really think it is.Lerato...

water stewardship and research advancedAs a large industrial user of water, Sasol has formed strategic partnerships with the Department of Basic Education in the Free State, the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) and the Water Research Commission (WRC).

In two separate collaboration agreements, Sasol has undertaken to

promote water conservation and improve treatment technologies and

the re-use of waste water in South Africa.

The signing ceremony and launch of partnerships took place on Friday,

26 April 2013 at Emerald Casino, Vanderbiljpark.

Project Busa Metsi

Typical water losses in municipalities vary between 30% and 45%,

mostly from ageing distribution systems and broken or leaking

plumbing fixtures, such as taps and toilets. Thus, the President of the

Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma’s call on the nation to reduce

water loss with 50% by 2014.

“Sasol’s partnership with the Department of Basic Education in

the Free State and the DWA, known as Project Busa Metsi, seeks

to minimise water losses at schools and educate learners on the

importance of water conservation; especially in the Metsimaholo

Municipality. This municipality receives its water from the Vaal River

system, together with approximately 40% of South Africans,” said

Sasol’s Executive Director, Nolitha Fakude. More than sixteen schools

will benefit from this project.

Speaking at the Water Sense Initiative launch, Deputy Minister of

Water and Environmental Affairs Rejoice Mabudafhasi said, “the

Department of Water Affairs maintains the focus on meeting water

loss reduction targets, managing South Africa’s scarce water resources

for long-term sustainability, improving the regulatory and institutional

environment, spearheading transformation in the water sector and

supporting the development of water resources infrastructure”.

Mabudafhasi further said, “the Department of Water Affairs has been

extensively engaging with Business/ Corporate to create private/ public

partnerships platforms for business to support and invest in municipal

infrastructure to reduce water risks. Sasol has indeed taken forward

the call and have partnered with Emfuleni Local Municipality focusing

on initiatives to reduce water loss in prioritised areas, education

and awareness in the community and schools with regards to water

conservation issues and on the development of new or support of

existing community plumbing entities”.

Sasol and the WRC

A partnership between Sasol Technology and the Water Research

Commission (WRC) will see both parties collaborate on finding new

technologies and opportunities to conserve water in South Africa.

Sasol Technology will offer the use of some of their Research and

Development (R&D) Piloting facilities in Sasolburg and Secunda to

researchers and academics from the WRC for research in conjunction

with Sasol Technology teams.

Mr Dhesigen Naidoo, WRC CEO said, “Through this partnership, we

want to fortify our science, technology and innovation partnership

to ensure a higher input of knowledge and workable technologies to

empower responsible water citizenship at all levels to ensure a water

successful future for our beautiful country. We are also confident that

with the huge support of national and provincial governments, we

have the right partnership formula to ensure its sustainability.”

This partnership will also see the creation of a joint research

commission (JRC) which will oversee and monitor the partnership

and seek out new opportunities for collaboration on other water

conservation matters.

Sasol and Water Sense

Sasol is also promoting efficient water use in its own operations. The

company’s largest operations in South Africa are dependent on the

water-stressed Vaal River System, which supplies most of Sasol’s water

requirements in South Africa.

Sasol further launched a group-wide initiative, Water Sense, which

aims to align its water stewardship practices throughout its various

operations around the world. It is the platform from which water-

related issues are co-ordinated and responded to, to address water

security risks, regulatory risks and the increased societal awareness of

water becoming a scarce and valued resource.

Dhesigen Naidoo, Water Research Commission CEO (left) and Sven Godorr, Executive Manager from Sasol Research and

Technology signing the agreement that will see both parties collaborate on finding new technologies and opportunities

to conserve water in South Africa. Behind them are the Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice

Mabudafhasi (left) and Sasol’s Executive Director, Nolitha Fakude (right).

The District Director of the Fezile Dabi Education District, Vusi Chuta accepts a work book from the Deputy Minister of

Water and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi (left) and Sasol’s Executive Director, Nolitha Fakude (right). The

work books will be used to educate learners on the importance of water conservation.
