Shabbat Evening ServicesOur Shabbat evening service will embrace you. Fresh and familiar music willenable you to give voice to your own spirit. Special occasions in the lives ofour congregants, Jewish teachings, sermons from our Rabbis, and specialmusic will enhance “Shabbat - our sanctuary in time.” Fridays, 6:00 pm.

Shabbat ClubEvery Friday during evening services, children two-years-old through 2nd grade meet for a Shabbat experience under the supervision of our EarlyChildhood Department. Call the School office for more information.

Torah Study on Shabbat Morning Start your Saturday morning with Torah study and a bagel with a shmeer(spread) of cream cheese. Each Shabbat morning before our Shabbat Morning Minyan (which starts at 10:30 am), you will study ParashatHaShavua, the weekly Torah portion. The Rabbis will lead a discussion ofancient commentaries and teachings and reveal the Torah’s modern andrelevant lessons. Every Saturday morning, 9:30 am.

Tot ShabbatThis lively service for pre-school-aged children and families combinesprayer, music, stories, snacks, and much more. Contact Mark Baranek. Takes place Saturday mornings, 9:30 am when Shabbat School is in session.

A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar andasks if he could buy him a drink.“Why of course,” comes the reply.The first man then asks, “Where are you from?”“I’m from Brooklyn,” replies the second man.The first man responds, “What a coincidence. I’m fromBrooklyn, too! Let’s have another round.”Curious, the first man then asks, “Where in Brooklyn areyou from?”“Flatbush,” comes the reply.“What a coincidence,” says the first man. “I’m fromFlatbush, too! Let’s have another drink.”“Where did you go to school?”“Midwood High. I graduated in ‘65.”“What an amazing coincidence,” the first man says. “Igraduated Midwood High in ‘65, too! Let’s have another.”About that time, in comes one of the regulars and sitsdown at the bar.“What’s been going on?” he asks the bartender.“Nothing much,” replies the bartender. “The Cohen twinsare drunk again.”

More and more in our world, we communicate with eachother without getting to know each other. The New York Times recently had an article, “To Text orNot to Text: a dating conundrum.” The piece was aboutcouples who text date over months and do not even sharetheir names or any pertinent details about their lives.

In Israel, a recent survey revealed that 48% of Israeliparents admit to barely speaking directly with theirchildren on a daily basis. Thirty-two percent of youngpeople preferred WhatsApp as their primary way ofconnecting with their parents. Only about 25% of kidsadmitted to preferring face-to-face interactions with theirown parents. The Adler Institute director Osnat Harelcommented on what I consider the core issue before us inthis modern information age: “The parents must takeback the responsibility and find the time and resources to

be present and involved in the lives of their children.” Isee this phenomenon all around us.

I would add that this applies to each of us. We must eachtake responsibility and find times to be there, present forone another, more often and without our communicationdevices.

We need to carve out more moments of personal contactwith our family, our friends, our co-workers and spend lesstime texting and communicating electronically.

Passover is about to offer us an important moment togather around our tables for an evening (or two) ofextended conversation. The Seder is a time for askingquestions and discussing issues that separate andconnect us.

This year, let’s park our phones and other devices at theentrance of our homes and turn them off. Why notdiscuss our enslavement to email, texts, tweets, photosand all the other ways that keep us at arm’s length fromone another?

Why is this night different from all other nights?

On this night we sit together, face to face, and we speakwith each other, sharing ourselves and our genuinefeelings and thoughts. And this year we commit tospeaking to each other more often; to makingadditional time to get together in person; to sit with thosewe care about unimpeded by electronic disruptions.

This year we let our cell phones go, just a little more, andembrace one another anew as we celebrate theanniversary of our first liberation from slavery.

Chag Pesach Sameach! As you read these comments inHaKOL, I will be well into the second year of my two-yearterm as President. Thank you for the opportunity to serveour congregation.

Our Temple continues to thrive and flourish. In regard tothe recent activities of the board, our accomplishmentshave been very impressive:

We have drafted a new Strategic Plan, which will be thefoundation for our development over the next 5 years. Wecall this the TBS Vision 2020.

We adopted a new Temple Beth Sholom missionstatement. We will be celebrating the new missionstatement in the coming months as we introduce it to ourcongregation. Our new mission is supported with five corevalues: Spirituality, Lifelong Education, Community, Israeland Repairing the World.

We approved a new Personnel Handbook, which will guideour personnel policies and procedures so we are compliantwith all laws and able to be responsive to the needs of ouremployees. We have also reviewed our wage and benefitpolicies.

We continued to follow our fiduciary responsibilities byreviewing all budgetary operations and focusing on fiscalresponsibility.

We supported our Legacy Endowment campaign to securethe future of TBS for many generations.

We established the Rabbinic Search Committee to beginthe process of the Senior Rabbi leadership transition.

In March, we were able to come together as a congregationfor two very exciting events: Mitzvah Day and the House ofRock FUNraiser. We had record participation. While bothevents were very different, they represented the soul of ourtemple, where we take helping others and coming togetheras a community very seriously.

On a personal note, I am very excited that Lily (my 15 yearold daughter) will be participating in the JTravel trip toLondon. We all say it many times: “We all want to be ourchildren!” God Bless them! Thank you to Jonathan Symonsfor underwriting our JTravel program so that our teenagersremain engaged in Jewish activities throughout the world. Finally, I hope that your Passover seder is spiritually andgastronomically satisfying! Shalom!

And what a Spring it has been thus far! In a few short weeks, we’ve already launched our “BuildingYour Brand” professional development & networking series AND had our annual Yoga/Havdalah onthe Beach.

Looking to this month, we will be returning to the same spot on the beach, 53rd St, for our annualShabbat on the Beach on April 15. That Sunday, April 17, The Tribe is gathering for its 2nd AnnualSunday Funday at Clevelander, Marlins Park. This year it is entitled “Don’t Get Passed Over. Get

Screened!” The day-long event will include an educational session on the importance of Jewish Genetic Disease Screening,where one can get screened, enjoy an all you can eat brunch, a drink, and game admission against the WashingtonNationals, all for $36 ($25 for Chai Tribesters!).

Looking to next month, save May 12 on your calendar for Yom Ha’atz Miami at Basement Miami at Edition Hotel. All Jewish Young Professionals in the community come out for this nightlife event to celebrate Israel’s birthday. Details tocome. MITZVAH DAY By the time this HaKOL reaches you, a few months willhave passed since Mitzvah Day–but the good feelingsremain.

With 43 thoughtful projects, over 900 of us touchedmany, many lives. Together, our teams cleaned, built,played, fed, examined, dressed, photographed, beaded,planted, decorated, read, shared, smiled, laughed, talked,cared and listened. We donated books and we donatedblood. We showed up and demonstrated ourcommitment to repairing the world, one gesture at a time.As one Captain wrote: “Temple Beth Sholom’s MitzvahDay is truly one of the most meaningful experiences of myentire year.” Thank you to all of our Captains andparticipants for being part of this awe-inspiring day inwhich we created seismic ripples of good. A specialthanks to our Chairpeople, Jaleh Samway Bast and CherylZuckerman, for creating this day of lovingkindness forour congregation.

One of the great additions to this year’s Mitzvah Day wasthe Vibe 305 Food Truck, which brought us not onlydelicious food, but also another opportunity for doing aMitzvah.

We are all getting very excited for ouryear-end trip to Verde Farms in Homestead on Saturday, April16, where we will get to tour the farm where the majority of ourlocal organic produce is sourced. In addition to a farm tour,there will be a Jewish educational component and a farm totable lunch is available onsite for purchase. $10 per adult canbe paid onsite directly to Verde Farms. Dear Families,When I read the attached passage from the Machzor, Iam reminded of the importance of kehilla (community)and how this writing speaks to the essence of myprofessional goals and personal beliefs. As an earlychildhood educator within a Jewish setting, I strive to liveJewishly everyday within our beautiful and welcomingTemple Beth Sholom community. It is a priority for me tonurture and support the development of a sacredcommunity within our Foundation School, where wecome together not only to pray, but also to welcome andtake care of each other in authentic and meaningfulways. We feel commitment to Kehilla everyday. Literally,the youngest members of society are here with us: ourinfant/toddler program starts at eight weeks, and they aredepending on us fully for their every need. Ourresponsibility is not only to these little children, but alsoto their families. We work closely with and are responsiveto our families within our entire Foundation School. Ourgoal is to be a home away from home for our children

and their families and to support them on their spiritualjourneys.

Through our diversified educational approaches andexperiences at the Foundation School, we are enabling ourchildren to develop their individual and collective “ways ofknowing” God. I look to our affirmation prayer, The Sh’ma,and find guidance in the Ve-a-hav-ta verses: “And you shalllove the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your souland with all your mind… And you shall teach them diligentlyto your children…”, which I believe could be the originalteacher’s guide for developmentally appropriate practices.This prayer speaks to teaching and learning throughdifferent modalities (speaking, listening, binding) andinvolving the senses (seeing, hearing, and touching) in orderto teach, learn and remember.

In my position at our Foundation School, I find that I playmany different roles in nurturing the spiritual lives of my staff,children and their families. At times I feel that I am like amirror reflecting feelings, successes, failures, joys etc. Othertimes, I am the master inquirer, empathetic listener or thebiggest fan club member! But my favorite role is that of astory developer, keeper and teller. As our young families andtheir children travel through these early years in ourFoundation School, they are the living characters in theirindividual family narratives and collectively in our living storywhich reflects Temple Beth Sholom’s values, beliefs, goals,and wishes within our community at large. It is an honor tobe a part of helping to write segments of these storiesthrough the creation of meaningful rituals and FoundationSchool experiences for our families. Together we aregrowing Jewish souls. What a beautiful privilege it is for meto be a part of this special time in our young families’ lives!

How Our Donors Impact The Future

It is a national phenomenon that kids stop coming toTemple after their B’nei Mitzvah. There is anunfortunate gap of time between B’nei Mitzvah andConfirmation when these young adults becomedisengaged.

This fall, the School for Living Judaism (SLJ) launchedits first official year of iLimud. Our goal is to deliver anexperiential and on-going Jewish journey for our postB’nei Mitzvah students (grades 7-9). We engage themthrough hands-on learning, where the studentsinfluence the curriculum while, at the same time, weprepare them for the future of Jewish adulthood. Webring Judaism to life through elective classes that aretaught by professionals in the field and relevant to ourstudents’ everyday lives.

“My goal was to re-invigorate and re-awaken youthinvolvement for this age group at the Temple. Nothingwould please me more than to have a ton of youthroaming these halls and being present. I want theseyouth to fill the halls with the sound of futuregenerations,” said Dadoun.

The Broad Bussel family have been Temple BethSholom members for over 70 years. In recognition ofthe fact that both TBS and education have playedmajor roles in the lives of the Broad Bussel family, theyhave generously set up a fund to support unbudgetedinnovative educational programming at TBS’ School forLiving Judaism.

Thanks to this generous fund, we were able to launchthis new initiative, iLimud, for this demographic inneed. Beyond that, Ann Bussel has been a hands oncheerleader and mentor for all the programs the familyhas underwritten.

One of the tracks that our children are able to select is aJewish Art class. Each project takes place over thecourse of a few weeks. It is not a one-off experience, butan opportunity for students to delve deeply into theirthoughts and create personal connections to what theyare studying and to Judaism over a period of time. At

the beginning of the second semester, our iLimud students(7th-9th grade) were charged with capturing photographs ofsacred spaces at the Temple. They walked around the Templewith the cameras on their iPhones and were encouraged totake different photographs according to their viewpoints. Theytook photos in a way that represented the most sacred spaceto them, focusing on the angle and using the lens as theirstoryteller.

The following week, we printed out the pictures and each ofthem chose their favorite one to paint onto a canvas at aprofessional art studio. One of the goals is to use technology,because we know how it speaks to this generation. We areteaching this generation to learn how to use technology toconnect to their tradition. We have to use the tools that speakto our youth.

At the art studio, the students worked with professional artistswho guided them on how to put their photographic imageonto the canvas, while capturing the essence of this sacredspace. In the studio, it was such a community feeling. Thestudents and staff have become so tight-knit that they wereable to help each other, encourage one another, as well asgive constructive feedback. We have built something sospecial and so warm. There was such a need for this–to fill thisspiritual place in their hearts as well as use innovation toeducate. The kids were essentially starving for this spiritualuplifting.

Part of this process was ignited because Ann Bussel wantedtheir family fund to be used towards experiential education.This was one of the ways in which we were able to fulfill thedonor’s wishes and create a much needed program that isapproachable and exciting for our students.

TBS is now a part of their lives during thiscrucial period in what was a gap in Jewish education. We arepreparing them for Jewish adulthood and being Jews outsideof their parents’ four walls.

Message from Rabbi MorrisonRabbi Morrison

Many of you correlate my rabbinate closely with the kidsof TBS and, although this is a wonderful association, it isnot the only arena where I fulfill my passion of creatingcommunity.

Recently, I returned to the classroom (virtually) andbegan a part-time Master’s program in Gerontology atthe University of Southern California. For my entire life, Ihave had a special connection with the elderly and Iwanted to formalize this within an academic framework.

So how can I be old enough to reflect on my aging andthe study of aging in general? In some placesthroughout the world and definitely at some other timesin history, my approaching 40 is old–or at least not asyoung as I internalize it. The process of aging isfascinating to me and, as life expectancies lengthen, so does our ability to change our perceptions of what”old” means.

As I look in the mirror today, I sometimes find that I haveto do a double-take. The woman standing in front of medoesn’t reflect the younger inner-self that attempts topeek out through my open eyes. The body I see issagging and exposes childbirth and surgeries. It hasdiscolorations and extra weight and imperfectionsadorning it from top to bottom. I walk in a world thatstares and glares and judges. And yet, on the inside I amstill ”young,” even though on the outside I resemble”middle age.”

Many philosophers say that age is only a state of mind.My question is, don’t we each have the power to choose

how old we really are? One thing is for certain. I can’tstop the days from passing by and, therefore, I obviouslycan’t halt my aging in any real way. What I can do is work hard to bring my outer shell more in line with myinner spirit.

The Depression Era film star Marie Dressler says, “It’s nothow old you are but how you are old.” Everything isperspective and we must remind ourselves that, even asthe days and years pass, the greatest thing about gettingolder is that you don’t lose all the other ages you’vebeen. We are constantly reinventing our age.

Just as we exercise our intellect with reading and traveland music and art, we must also exercise our bodies—not only with weights and cardio, but with caring lessabout how others perceive us and more about how wemust care for ourselves. We all need to strive towardsaging gracefully, or, as my grandmother of 97 yearsstates, “Each day you live with a smile on your face andlove in your heart is another day you stay young.”

Let us find more ways to allow our inner beauty andyouth to shine through, even as our outer bodycontinues to collect years. Let’s remind ourselves andothers that society doesn’t get to decide how old aperson is, how well a person can function, or howbeautiful a person looks.

Judaism teaches that God allows us to define ourselvesand, in God’s eyes, we were all created whole andcomplete. Therefore, no matter what age we achieve, weare perfect and beautiful.

Membership in Temple Beth Sholom is open to all, regardless of means. Our annual commitment is basedon a suggested standard amount and on one’s ability to pay, regardless of one’s use of the various programs the Temple offers.This structure enables all who are interested to join the Temple and

contribute. The policy of Temple Beth Sholom is that no one is refused membership for financial reasons.

B’nei Mitzvah April 2016

Aaron Brodsky will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 2, 2016. He is the sonof Juli and Barry Brodsky, and twin brother of William Brodsky. His grandparents are EdithBrodsky from North Miami Beach, and Judith and Gil Messing from Palm Beach.

Aaron is a seventh grade student at Miami Country Day School, where he plays the violinand has taken a liking to drama. Aaron loves boating and fishing, as well as spending timewith his family, friends, and his four dogs! As part of his mitzvot, Aaron will be taking part inthe Red Bag of Courage Mitzvah Project, so that he can save lives by helping to raisefunds needed to stock an Israeli paramedic’s bag with bandages, oxygen masks, syringes,medical equipment and medicine.

William Brodsky will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 2, 2016. He is theson of Juli and Barry Brodsky, and twin brother of Aaron Brodsky. His grandparents areEdith Brodsky from North Miami Beach, and Judith and Gil Messing from Palm Beach.

William is a seventh grade student at Ransom Everglades, where he plays the violin inaddition to his studies. He also enjoys singing and has recorded several songs that areavailable on Apple Music. William loves to discover new things on his computer, includingcoding and making applications, and he enjoys spending time with his friends, his familyand his four dogs! Jake is a seventh grade student at Ransom Everglades School, where he plays forRansom’s middle school football and baseball teams. He also plays travel baseball forMiami Pro Baseball. In his spare time Jake fishes, golfs, and manages multiple fantasyfootball teams. For his mitzvah project, Jake will be donating a portion of his gifts to theAmerican Society for Yad Vashem in memory of his great-great-grandparents who wereHolocaust victims and in honor of his great-grandparents who were Holocaust survivors.

Hudson Channing Elegant will be called to the Torah as a Mincha Bar Mitzvah on April 9,2016. Hudson is the son of Jennifer and Justin Elegant and the younger brother of LukeElegant. His grandparents are Susan and Joel Channing and Ira Elegant and the lateSharon Elegant.

Hudson is a seventh grade honors student at Ransom Everglades Middle School. He lovesplaying tennis and is a member of the school tennis team. Hudson also enjoys music, pingpong, wakeboarding, frisbee, jogging on the beach, playing cards, and going to MiamiHeat games. For many years, Hudson has volunteered at the Miami Rescue Mission. Thisyear, as his Bar Mitzvah project, Hudson organized a large team of family and friends tojoin him in serving the homeless on Thanksgiving. He also raised money for this incredibleorganization.


Ryan Mendelson will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 30, 2016. He is theson of Laura and Alan Mendelson, and brother of Evan and Alex Mendelson. Hisgrandparents are Judy and Sidney Bloom and Linda and George Mendelson.

Ryan is a seventh grade honor student at Miami Country Day School where he runs cross country and plays basketball and lacrosse. He enjoys playing and watching sports,hanging with his family, snowboarding, playing on his travel flag football team and going to Camp Manitou during the summer. As part of his mitzvot, he will be running abasketball tournament in April to spread awareness and raise funds for Childhood Cancer Research.

Courtney Nicole Webster will be called to the Torah as a Mincha Bat Mitzvah on April 16,2016. She is the daughter of Sofia and David Morales and sister of Sarah Morales. Hergrandparents are Lisa and Hugo Morales and Abi and Ricardo Mendoza.

Courtney is a seventh grade student at Nautilus Middle School. She is involved in theaterand won a local competition to participate in a national acting competition, helping herteam from Nautilus Middle School be part of this competition for the first time in history.She enjoys painting and drawing and will be applying to the local art schools and tocomplete her high school degree.

Stella Miles Becker Wood will be called to the Torah as a Minyan Bat Mitzvah on April23, 2016. She is the daughter of Beth Becker and Thomas Wood. Her grandparents areIrma and Michael Goldstein and Linda and Mathis Becker. Her great-grandmother isHelen Warner.

Stella is a seventh grade student at Miami Country Day. She enjoys art and dance and is amember of Impac Youth Ensemble, where she competes regionally and nationally in bothsolo and group dance. Stella was the first runner-up last summer at Nationals in LasVegas and has received numerous scholarships to workshops and competitions. Stella ishonored to be featured on the exterior of one of Country Day’s school buses and hasmodeled for several major brands. She loves to travel and spends part of every summerwith family at Chautauqua Institute, excelling in loom weaving. Stella is a member ofOperation Smile, where she participates in fundraising activities. As part of her mitzvahproject, she will donate a portion of her gifts to Operation Smile.

Golda LieberPerson will be called to the Torah as a Mincha Bat Mitzvah on April 30, 2016.She is the daughter of Jenni Person and Chaim LieberPerson and sister of IsaiahLieberPerson. Golda is a seventh grade student at Young Women’s Preparatory Academy,where her favorite subject is Civics. She was born in Los Angeles overlooking theHollywood sign. At age four, she was named Grand Marshal of the Miami AIDS Walk andreceived the key to the City of Miami Beach. Golda is recognized for her civic engagement,having publicly lobbied the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners for thereinstatement of the arts budget in a televised meeting. More than anything in the world,she loves hanging out with her friends. Goldi lives in the Design District with her parents,her little brother, Izzi, and four cats.
